We use one of the rooms in the house for the cats to stay in overnight
so they aren't roaming the kitchen counters and such at night.  All
the cat furniture, the food stations, and a litter box are in there.
We even try to keep all the little cat toys corraled in there.

Late last night, in an attempt to let us know he was hungry, Samson
knocked Cleo's Corelle food plate off of the chest of drawers.  Did I
say it was late?  It was early.  Two in the morning early.  We were
watching a late night movie and planning to feed the kitties at the
next commercial so we could just go to bed when the movie ended when
"Crash!" our peace was shattered.  Shattered is an understatement, it
was more like exploded.

We investigated only to find a pile of Corelle glass shards just
inside the cat room door.  This absolutely had to be cleaned up
immediately for the safety of the kitties, and our feet.  DH got up
the big pieces and I went to fetch the vacuum to get up the rest of
the pile.  We didn't realize the extent of the problem just yet.  Then
I noticed the water bowl had little white bits in it, and two food
bowls near it had the same problem, so I looked farther afield.  Tiny
glass shards were all over the room including on the opposite side of
the chest of drawers from where it broke:  inside food bowls, on the
cat beds, inside the Kitty Cubes, out into the hallway, and generally
as far as twelve feet from the impact.  I just kept vacuuming and
removing things until I was on the opposite side of the room, and I
was still finding little bits of glass.

Did I say this was a cat food plate?  Truthfully it was a human sized
saucer.  How does so much mess come from something so small?

An hour later we had the whole room vac'ed, the food and water bowls
cleaned, a new bowl for Cleo, and some of the cat furniture and toys
cleared of glass and returned to the room.  Our computer desks and
some shelves cleared of glass too.

We will clean up the rest of the removed items today so they can be
put back.  I think I'll wash all the cat beds first.

When I bought my twelve-serving set, Corelle was supposed to
be unbreakable! (One reason I bought it, since it looks
nicer than plastic, and I'm accident prone when it comes to
dishes.)

If it hits just right on a hard surface, it will shatter.  But I remember my
mom bought a set when it first came out and she was throwing them on the
linoleum floor just to test them.  Hers didn't break.  But it was padded
linoleum.  As with many products, the quality of the newer Corelle has
probably degraded over the years.

That's what I always heard about Corelle growing up, too, but sure
haven't heard it in recent years!  Sorry about you late night
"adventure". :)

if you read the warranty for Corelle, it was only guaranteed to
be unbreakable for X number of years.  It tends to get brittle
after a while, and breaks easier if it hits something just right.
I always hated cleaning up an 'exploded' piece of Corelle!

I have used Corning ware for many years,  I have dropped a piece or so to
the floor without  breaking.  I did, however, just slightly bump my
Corningware teapot and it broke.  MLB

Although they're made by the same company, "Corningware" and
"Corelle" are not the same product.  SFAIK, "Corningware"
was the company's answer to "Pyrex bakeware" - "Corelle" was
designed as an inexpensive, more durable alternative to
china.  (And originally, there was no time limit given for
its "unbrealability" - of course I bought mine in its early
days, when their cups were still graceful teacups, not mugs.)

Exactly.  I still have a set of it from the 1970's with the teacups and
saucers.  None of the pieces have broken to date although I don't use them
regularly anymore (got tired of them and replaced them after 20 years).  But
I hear if they hit just right it's a major mess!

I have a set of Corelle, with cups and saucers, too.  A couple of the plates
have been broken, and yes, they really shatter when they do break.  If they
land flat, they probably won't break, but if they hit a concrete floor (even
if it is covered with tile), on edge, it's impressive.  ;-)

Ugh.  2am!

when we die, people will wonder why the inside of our house is looking more
and more like a cross between a rubber room and a padded cell.

We have always maintained one bit of co-operation in our marriage.  If I
break it Charlie cleans it up.  If he breaks it, I clean it up.  If the kids
or cats do, we both clean up.

Mostly because whoever just broke something is in no condition nerve wise to
clean up shards.

And we try not to replace anything breakable with something else fragile.

Especially since Molly the little darling has a talent for putting her paws
on the rim of things to look inside.

That's lovely, actually! Kind of a nice microcosm of what a good
marriage should be. Stepping in for each other, when the other isn't
in the right condition to do it him/herself.

Thanks.

I don't pretend to have a great marriage, or even an especially good one.
But we can travel together without friction, can both work in the same
kitchen to prepare a meal without getting in each others way and support
each other in dozens of small ways.

And we will have been doing so for forty years this coming Friday.

Well, that sounds like a pretty good marriage to me! Congratulations!

It sure is! We have an unspoken agreement re: clean-up too; if it's
excretions that originated inside
a cat's (or dog's, or kid's) body, I clean it up. This includes
hairballs, poop, puke, etc. But if it's
something dead, I can't touch it. So he gets the half-eaten mice,
accidentally-run-over frogs in
the driveway, etc.

Those are the things that really make individuals partners.  At least to my
way of thinking.

Argh! I hope you managed to get all the shards.
