Rob was having problems with his seizure medicines, so we packed up the
walker, wheel chair, plastic tote of clothes, spare driver and bathroom
spotter (Mike) and all the other things we knew we'd need and headed north
to Chapel Hill. The long and short of it: I've been inadvertently over
dosing Rob on dilantin. He was really shaky with a medicine change the
doctor gave him, so I put him back on the original amount of Depakote (sp)
but didn't drop the Dilantin back to the original amounts. Depakote
heightens Dilantin levels, Rob had a Dilantin level of 31 when normal is
10-20. He's back on the original amounts of medicines, and should get
better soon. Dr McNeil also gave me a sliding scale for giving Rob his
insulin. I was just told to give him 27 units of humulin in the morning and
22 at night. Now if and/or how much insulin he gets depends on his blood
sugars. I feel more comfortable about that now.
I don't know what was happening at Chapel Hill, but all of the motels were
booked. Being cheap, we stayed at the Econolodge on Hollyridge street in
Raleigh. It was not only reasonably cheap, but was clean, comfortable, and
had a microwave and mini fridge. It was not in the greatest repair or in a
fantastic neighborhood, but we didn't really care. It worked for us. Not
only that but we discovered lunch at O'Malley's Tavern, an Irish style pub.
Rob ordered a chicken parmesan sub that made him moan as he ate it, it was
that good. I can't laugh as my Irish dip sandwich (roast beef and cheese in
a roll with au jus) had me moaning with joy as well. Not only that, but the
chef there actually knew how to cook onion rings. As aficionados know onion
rings are not the easiest things to get right, but the chef got these as
close to perfect as possible. Mike had an "Irish Club Sandwich" that got
him talking blarney for a while, it was THAT good. We went back for
breakfast this morning, but wasn't impressed. The food was ok, but a major
let down after yesterdays' lunch.
The big problem with motels is no cats. I asked and was told $5/night/pet.
That sounds reasonable to me. We were so happy to get home. Rob climbed
into bed and Merlin, Huey, Qui Gun Kit, and QC had a brief debate as to
which cat(s) got to claim Rob. Merlin and Huey won. The other two
contented themselves with sleeping in the same room for a while then left to
find more exciting activities. Merlin and Huey won't leave Rob alone for a
minute, they even trail him to the bathroom. Rob has such good nursecats.

Pam,
It's good that you got Rob's medicine dosage straightened out. But even
better, it sounds like you both had a good time, which I'm sure you really
needed.
Yes, Rob has some excellent nurse cats. It's sweet how they are so
attentive.

Glad you got the meds sorted. You will get used to dosing the insulin
according to BG. It becomes quite automatic, so you don't even have to
do the math any more.
Glad the trip was otherwise nice. We have a pub called O'Malley's here
in Helsinki, but it's not known for its good cuisine, if you know what I
mean. ;) I used to frequent it quite a lot as a twenty-something.

A chef who knows how to cook onion rings properly! I'd be on the next
flight if I could afford it (and didn't have to go back to work
tomorrow after a week off- sob!)
I'm glad you found somewhere nice to take some time out together. When
Dave was in Thames House, I think the "Half
Moon" may have been the thing that kept us together. Just getting away
from hospital for a few hours, being able to eat together like couples
do (The staff at the hospital thought Dave was a bit weird. Whenever I
went to sign him out and wrote on the form "Going for lunch/dinner" it
would be 50-50 that someone would say something like "But he's got a
perfectly
good dinner here" and when I pointed out "Yes but I haven't" you could
see some sort of vague disbelief that I was thinking of feeding
myself...like how selfish can you get?). chat and have a couple of
beers really kept us sane. I think if I;d sat in that room every day I
would have killed him in fairly short order or especially towards the
end when he didn't get any physio
he would have killed me or himself. By the end, he'd be sitting in his
room, coat on, form in hand, pen at the ready (He even filled some of
them in for me so I wouldn't waste a second) and before I could utter
a word he'd be saying "Well what are you waiting for? Sign this and
get me out of here!"
When it looked like he might have to stay a bit longer because the
housing weren't moving, one of his nurses was heard to comment "What
are you complaining about staying here for? You're never in!"
(They ran out of the form for taking someone out, as Joyce said "We
don't normally use many of them- not until you two came along")
Any way it's just nice to have a normal moment, good food, good
company. Enjoy them!

Thanks Adrian- don't have to tell Dave bad news then. He's a little
touchy at the moment as his hay fever is just kicking in (early- must
be the weather we're having) and also after a week of sheer lazy bliss
for both of us, I have to go back to work tomorrow and he's got the
dreaded tough team on Thursday at 9.30 (They said "We don;t mind
coming a bit later. 9.30 okay?" and Dave who likes to stay up late and
sleep late was so stunned that anyone would consider 9.30 late that he
let it go)

It is for Dave, he likes to stay up late (his theory is there is better telly
after middnight and after last week I agree with him) and as he works from
home, he doesn't have to worry about getting up normally. These past few
weeks with all the teams, district nurses etc have been very wearing for him.
The best of them agreed to come between 12 and 1 in the afternoon and they
are the one's he worked best with probably because he had had time to switch
his brain on, have some breakfast and get a bit more supple.
One of the nurses let himself in at 8.15 one morning and was worried that
Dave was sound asleep he (the nurse, not Dave) insisted that 8.00 was late
enough for anyone to stay in bed (At the other end, when he was in Thames
House, the Fundamentalist once snapped at me that "8 in the evening is plenty
late for staying out!")

Don't you just love the ego in some people who think that their way is the
only right way. NOT
Even down to everyone else should live according to their body clock.
Besides I think everyone should have the right to walk about their own home
in their undies if they want to.

You mean we don't have the right to walk around our own home in our undies? Boy this is going to be a long miserable summer for sure.

Thank you Adrian. You made me laugh, and that took some doing at this time
on this day.
I think I'll go try to get some sleep before I read or see or hear anything
else stressful.

LOL, since Rob hasn't had to go in to work for almost 5 years, we've all
developed owl tendencies. Even the d-thing doesn't ask to go out until
after 7 am. Rob's RN showed up at 8 am a couple of weeks ago, and caught us
all in our pajamas. Even the cats looked like they'd been woke up from the
beginning of a long winter's nap. Rob thinks I'm terrible if I wake him
before 10 am for his blood sugar testing.
