So he tells me. However, he is slowly getting even more socialized, at
least to me. I think he WANTS to be a lap cat.
He came back inside yesterday, and has been following me closely. This
is partly because Little Feet and Dulce Mae swat him whenever they get
near (and he makes it worse by going low to the ground and/or
running). So I guess I'm his designated bodyguard.
While he doesn't really like to be held, he will occasionally meow to
be picked up, then meow a few seconds later to be put down. Then meow
to be picked up, meow to be put down... for as long as I will play the
gane (grin).
He has noticed that Little Boy will sit on the shredder, then climb
into my lap. Since he and little Boy are playmates, he has started to
emulate some of little Boy's behavior.
This morning, Bucky has been sitting on the shredder, looking
longingly at my lap. When I urge him over, he will let me cuddle him
for a second, but he moves to the chair arm and jumps down. Then he
gets back on the shredder... Are we seeing a pattern yet?
He sometimes lets me hold him like a baby in my arms (as I do with all
the other cats), and he he even lets me kiss his tummy. What a sweet,
if nervous little one.
He is still very unsure, but willing. Still, this is progress over
last year, when he was a completely wild little kitten who ran
screaming into the night (okay, silently, but really really fast)
whenever a human came withing fifty feet of him, his sister and his
mama. His mama, little traitor, had no problems being petted (big
grin).
If I can find him a forever home, he will be a great house kitty.
I've taken to joking with him, telling him I'm going to make kitten
sandwiches or kitten pudding. Of course, his nickname is now "Kitten".
Right now, he is stretched out atop the shredder (no, it isn't plugged
in), and has one paw on my leg. I can hear his loud, rumbly purr as I
type. He is watching the screen with curiosity.
Hugs and Purrs,
Mark

I adopted four cats last summer who had been abandoned in a house
belonging to a friend, when he finally managed to evict the crazy
tenant who was living there. These cats had been wildly mistreated,
and I brought them home gradually. My older cats were very cool, and
two of the new ones adjusted very easily and had been affectionate
before I got them out of the house. The other two, black-and just- a-
few-white-hairs sisters, who had been shut up in a small bedroom for
their whole lives (3 or 4 years) were a different story. I started by
letting them out of the room and giving them the run of the upper
floor. In a month or two, one of them was waiting every day when I
came in to feed them, and purred when I picked her up. As it got
colder, I decided to bring them back to my house. The friendly one
settled right in but her sister was terrified and refused to come out
from under the bed for three months. Then she would skulk in corners
and on top of the hot water heater in the basement, but at the
slightest noise or movement, she would bolt. This has gone on for
about five months altogether. Late yesterday afternoon, I was lying on
my bed reading, and the friendly black sister was sitting on my tummy
when all of a sudden the shy one jumped up, sat on my chest and
started purring up a storm. She stayed there all day, slept with me
last night and seems to have turned around 180 degrees. Miracles do
happen!
These two girls are identical except for their eyes. The friendlier
one is Emerald, but called Emmy Lou, because of her gorgeous green
eyes, and the shyer one is Goldie, because of her equally gorgeous
yellow eyes.
It's also interesting that all four of these cats knew each other
right away, although they'd mostly been cooped up in separate rooms.
They groom each other and sleep together and eat off each other's
plates. They are all probably related in some way, but it's impossible
to tell how.
