The Dee Oh Gee and Leonidas

Hi everyone,

Been a while since I've posted anything resembling a story about the
beasts, but wanted to share this one:

To preface, the dee oh gee (Shelby the d*g), has had a cough for over
6 months.  She wouldn't cough for the vet, so based on a description
(and sound effects of yours truly), TED decided that it was "probably"
tracheal collapse, somewhat normal in smaller breeds.

Finally, yesterday, after Shelby had been having a particularly bad
couple of days, we went into TED and she got to hear the cough for
herself.  Shelby has Kennel Cough (which I suspected 6 months ago, but
I digress)...  She now has medicine, and seems to be feeling better
(Prednisone will do that for you).

Last evening, while I was reading posts in various groups.  Leonidas
(who likes to think he owns the world) decided that he was going to
test meowmie's patience again.  He likes to stand on his hind legs,
flex his paws (and thereby claws) and 'hang' onto the side of Paw's
easy chair.  He doesn't pull, just sticks his claws in the material.

Meowmie turned around to look at him.  At this point, Shelby decided
that meowmie needed her specialized assistance.  Now, Shelby has never
done anything like this before, so my surprise was absolutely so
complete that I couldn't get my camera (of course).  Shelby stood up,
walked over to the chair, put her paws on either side of Leonidas, and
bit his scruff.  She lifted him off the side of the chair and set him
down less than a foot from the chair.

The look of utter shock on the cat's face was priceless.  Leonidas has
always had frown lines on his head, so he had his frown and his
eyebrows were arched up in a look, that for all the world, said, "What
are you doing?  You don't do that?  You never do that!"  I checked him
out, just out of basic concern, but his scruff wasn't even damp.

Shelby had not hurt him in any way (accept maybe his lionistic
pride).  Oddly enough, he hasn't done that stretch/puncture/release
thing since she took him down.

Who knew that a d*g would be that gentle, when she was never trained
to do that?  The kicker to all this is that Leonidas is only slightly
'shorter' than Shelby (though she does outweigh him).  He has even
come out this morning and given her head bumps and rubs (which she
doesn't seem to like), and he'll lie down next to her when she coughs,
like he's trying to comfort her.

My babies never cease to amaze me!

And presumably yells, "THIS IS SPARRRRRRRRRRRRTA!" ;)

Honestly, if he could, he probably would.  That is exactly (pre Butler
though) who he was named after.  He looked so regal that he had to
have a "kingly" name.

Granted, handsome as he is, he ain't nearly so cute as Mr. Gerard

You, me and Paw (he kept trying to make Leonidas do it again, since he
missed it too).

Oh he is too adorable!  Have you ever seen him on a talk show?  He's a
very silly man.

No I haven't seen him outside of characters in films.  I simply love
his Phantom <sigh>.  I've been trying to talk my hubby into seeing 300
(you'd think he'd be interested, but since that hunk a man runs around
without a shirt, hubby seems a bit concerned - lol).  I don't do
theatres well, but I'm willing to tolerate the discomfort to see it on
the large screen.

He and countless other very buff types run around in little leather
loin cloths. ;)

Stories like that remind me how wonderful animals are. I'm glad you posted

What a story!  Animals do seem to think things through.  Purrs for your
furkids.   MLB

What Breed in Shelby?  I'm guessing one of the "soft mouth" varieties.

The way I've heard it explained the soft mouth canines have to bite gently
or risk hurting themselves.  They have such floppy flews (side lips) that
they get in the way of chomping down.

Actually, she's (what we Americans call) a mini Aussi Shepherd, she's
got a blue eye and brown eye.  She's never done anything like this
before.  She has, on occasion, herded the cats (which they tolerate
for some reason), and she herds daddy and me as well.  She even
managed to herd some cattle that had swum across the river when we
used to go for walks on the River Trail (she wasn't trained for that
either, but I think it's instinctual).

She does have kind of floppy flews though.  Been letting me brush her
teeth lately, since she hates TED and I don't want her put under for
anymore cleaning.  It's awfully hard on her.

We used to have a Gordon Setter (Boozer), when I was younger, that my
mom 'caught' tossing a 2 week old kitten into the air and catching
him.  Scared the kitten, but he was soaking wet but fine.  The dog was
a stray, that hung around for a year or two, then ran off to someone
else's home.

It sounds like they have a beautiful relationship.  I hope that
Shelby's cough gets better.

She is doing better.  I think the Prednisone is what's working right
now, but she's only gnawing a little on me while I put the pill in her
throat (the antibiotic and the pred).

She and Leonidas have always had a very good relationship.  He loves
his puppy and she loves him too.

My gorgeous boy Mookie was the love child of an unknown father and a
teenage mother. While he and his siblings were still tiny, the mother,
Jemima, used to take off whenever she could. The dog of the household,
Faust, a huge huskie (R.I.P. Faust, April 4th, 2007) took over the
mothering duties while Jemima wasn't around. He would pick up these
wee kittens, and carry them one at a time to his food bowl, deposit
them, and sit there on guard until Mom wandered back. He was amazingly
gentle, and the kittens never got the least bit wet or hurt.

Aww!  How sweet!

I grew up with a dog, and never knew a cat up close and personal.  After I
was married, we got a dog.  He was a sweet beagle, but we got him from the
pound.  Apparently he had been a stray, and he didn't like being confined.
He would break out of our yard often, no matter what we did.  One evening he
had gotten out, and my husband went out in front to call him, since we
wanted him home and safe before it got completely dark.  The dog didn't come
right away, but a scrawny, dirty kitten ran to Jim as though he had been
calling for the kitten.  He had grown up with cats, so he brought the kitten
in to show me.  We petted it and then put it outside.  In the morning when
Jim left for work, he found the kitten on the front porch.  Naturally we
kept him.

Max (the dog) did come home finally.  I was sitting in the living room with
the kitten on my lap when the two met.  I had no idea what would happen.
The kitten was purring, and as Max walked into the room and slowly came
toward us, the kitten purred louder and louder.  When Max got to where I
was, he put his front paws on my knees and started washing the kitten's
ears.  After that, they both acted as though Max were the kitten's mother.

That's adorable. How long did you have the kitty?

That involved a great deal less bloodletting, mine, than the first time I
introduced a kitten to a dog.  The things my brother used to talk me into.
He of course held the dog because it was bigger.
