Annie went to the rainbow bridge today at 10:26 a.m      .
I felt that it was time, her quality of life had really gone down.
Her left eye was getting milky and the vet verified that the cancer
was spreading.

When I went home to get her, she was resting next to her brother with
her head on his back.  I wrapped her in a towel and told the dogs to
say goodbye.  They were very respectful and just sniffed her a
little.  I think they knew what was going on.  Chyna, my husky mix,
looked concerned.

She used to come into the hall when I came home from work but lately
she just stayed asleep on the bed.  For the past few days, there had
been dried blood around her mouth, though I never saw the actual
bleeding.  Her tongue was sticking farther out the side of her mouth,
so I assumed the tumor had grown larger.

Yesterday was a pretty nice day.  I took her outside and we sat in the
sun and dozed.  The dogs were out with us.  Kodi, my chow mix, had
become fixated on Annie, constantly sniffing her whenever they were in
the same room.  I assume he smelled the cancer.  When we were outside,
he kept wanting to lick her.  She wasn't too crazy about a big wet dog
tongue being in her face.

I got Annie and her brother Jake from my brother's barn cat in Aug.
1995.  They were the first pets that were actually mine.  I didn't
know too much about cats.  Looking back, I wish I had handled them
more.  Annie pretty much kept to herself, she was a very timid girl.
She could usually be found under the bedspread.

I had a canary when I got them.  One day he got out and the cats had a
field day chasing him around the room.  Finally he landed behind a
chair.  When I went to get him, Annie had her paw on him, holding him
for me.  What a good girl!

I told her to look for Smokey, who just passed on Friday.

Thanks for all the purrs and warm wishes over the past month and a
half.

I'm so sorry to hear of Annie's passing.  I've kept up with your
reports of her and her chemo.  I was hoping that this would
be a case where it worked wonders.  I know that you had
a hard decision to make in helping her to RB.  I'm glad that
you were brave enough when the time came.  I know you and
those in your househole will miss her greatly.  Purrs for Annie's
crossing and purrs of comfort to you.

It is so hard to say goodbye.  But kind of bittersweet when we do get a bit
of good time to say goodbye gently.

Maybe you could have handled her more.  But as a first generation barn cat,
she may not have allowed it.  We can only do what seems to work at the time.
Bet she is at the bridge telling her mamma what a sweet life she fell into.

Purrs to ease the good-by,

I'm sorry to hear of Annie's passing, Theresa. =o( Been there, done
that, know the hurt of goodbye very well.

I do think you acted in Annie's best interests, though. It was time to
say good bye and let her go.  When an animal is in pain, the best
thing to do is to set them free of it. Give her brother lots of love
and scritching, as he's going to miss his sister. When enough time has
passed, consider finding a new cat companion for both of you.

I cried when I read about your little Annie.  Squamous cell carcinoma
is a death sentence, and there wasn't anything you could have done
about it.  They told me as much with my late Betty, when she was
diagnosed with it two years ago in August 2005.  Annie was very brave
and she knew that she was very beloved.

I want to post a reply but am not sure if I should in case it causes
distress or offence to either of you.  One of my beloved whippets was
diagnosed with a mast cell tumour a few years ago.  It started in his lip,
it's a similar thing to scc and I'd like to share the experience of what I
decided to do and whether you all think it was the right thing or not.  I
still worry about it.

I did what we all do because I did not want to lose him.  When it was past
the expertise of my own vet he was referred to the Veterinary School at
Cambridge University.  I took him there and we went down the chemotherapy
route.  It caused him no distress at all and for a while it seemed to work
but only for a few weeks.
The lymph glands in his neck swelled then, the cancer had spread.  He was
still ok, eating, drinking so I carried on.  Then his lip swelled up
enormously and began to bleed.  I knew then it was time to let him go.

I wish my vet had said earlier that it was pointless, because it was.  I
sometimes wonder whether vets let you carry on from sympathy
for you, or to earn more from someone who loves their pet.

I'm not sure if I would do it again with such a poor prognosis.
I took him for the walk of his life before his "appointment"  running free
in the woods and frightening the wildlife.

I lost him, anyway.  Why not earlier than later?
I remember reading "better a day too early than a day too late."
I hope I didn't make it a day too late with his poor lip dripping blood.

Tweed, I think I understand your concerns.  I thought the same thing,
I knew chemo would not cure her.  I suppose some vets may see dollar
signs, I think the vet I have is more about the pets.

When Annie was diagnosed I didn't feel I could immediately put her
down.  Part of my rationale was she wasn't suffering terribly much.  I
just had a really hard time saying "She has cancer, let's just put her
down."  I figured the chemo would buy us a little more time, and it
did.

Sounds like your dog had a pretty good quality of life right up to the
end.  He got that last "walk of his life".  I feel that if you hadn't
taken the path you did, you would be second guessing your decision.

I am comfortable with the path I took, I don't have any regrets.  I
got to spend some quality time with Annie and it would have been more
devastating had she been put down the day she was diagnosed.

I really wish I could find the words to comfort you, but I think you
took the path you needed to.

Hugs,
Theresa

you this time.

Sometimes I think the vets just want to give us a little more time to accept
the situation and to say goodbye.

But as much as I believe in better a day to early, for myself and well as
for my babies, I just don't seem to have it in me not to try for a little
longer than maybe is right.

And you did get to take him for that walk, who knows just what that meant to
him?

Theresa, my heart is breaking for you while at the same time I am so

asked to go rather than holding onto her for your own sake.  You've

It's not easy to decide when the time is, but IMHO you did the right thing.
I'm sorry for your loss.
I will light a candle for Annie's journey. I have a whole bunch of candles
that I save to light the way for the RB kitties, with all different scents.
Annie's candle will be violet scented.  I hope she would approve.

My sincerest condolences for your loss. Annie had a good life with you
and now she can play with Smokey and other rpca cats at the bridge.

I'm so very sorry to hear about Annie, Theresa. We lit a candle for her
when she started her journey and have kept you and her in our thoughts
and prayers.
