Yoda's Eye

I just noticed something really odd--I'm sure we'll end up going to
the vet quick as I can get an appt. anyway but I wanted to ask if
anybody has any reference info. about this.

Yoda's left eye is changing color around the rim. About 1/8 inch,
maybe more, next to the "white" of his eye has turned reddish brown.
The other eye hasn't, so I know it's not normal aging of the eyes. His
eyes are green, so it's a quite noticeable thing. I'm sure this just
came up very recently. I'd have noticed it before. Yoda has a real
history of recurrent conjuctivitis, but not for a few years. There is
no watering, no eye boogers, or anything else. Just a color change.

Anyone have any info. about this? Poor Odie. I have just dreaded the
day he starts going downhill because of his age.

Lori, did you ever see anything like this in Bandit?

Okay,  I googled and am in total freak-out mode now. It looks like the
pictures of uveitis. Which is more of an indicator of disease in the
body than a singular simple eye problem. Does anyone know anything
about this? Does anyone know why this stuff only happens on the
weekend???

Hope it isn't that.

As for weekends, mine aren't that partial to weekends.  6:15 PM will do just
fine.  I think they have a "thing" for the emergency vet.

I'm sorry, I don't know, but we are sending lots of purrs that it isn't
what you fear, and also lots of anti-freakout purrs.

Both Frank and Nikki did get brown spots in their eyes as they grew
older, but not in the pattern you describe. The vet said they were
normal pigmentation changes.

Yes, I'm familiar with those freckle-things. Can't remember what
they're called, but the
vet said it's a good indicator that a cat's age is in double-digits.
This isn't like
that at all. It's a ring completely around the outer edge of the iris
that's a murky
reddish color. Guess it's not a vital emergency, it can wait till I
can get an appt.
since it doesn't seem to bother him at all. He's tired of me staring
at him
though.

Oh, yes, cats can't stand to be stared in the eyes for long. Caliban
tends to get boogers in his eyes, and I'm always looking to see if he
has any, and what colour they are, in case they look infected. He hates
it when I stare him in the eyes.

You're supposed to blink at him so he knows it's not a sign of aggression.
Then you can look all you want, so long as you blink :)

Doesn't Susan M's cat Otis have eye discoloration?  She said it's just a
freckle on the eye, nothing to worry about.  I hope it's the same for
Yoda.  Many purrs,

AWww... your Odie is so cute, I chuckle at his moustache every time I
see him.
His eye thing is really odd. What did the vet say that was called? My
Odie's eye isn't like that though; its just the outer rim of the iris
that's changed. It's so weird. It looks almost translucent, like what
you're seeing is the bloody murky part of behind the eye. (not that I
know what it looks like behind a cat's eye though)

Yoda has an appt. for 2:30 Wednesday at the "good vet" (the expensive
one). I generally take them here for routine stuff but the vet in the
city specializes in feline practice. I think I'd save money in the
long run, because I'd probably end up just getting drops or something
here with a "wait and see" diagnosis, and end up taking him to the
city anyway later. Arrgghh. I so do not need this right now. But we
have been very lucky & healthy for a long time, so I should not
complain.

I got up sick this morning with some kind of weird flu. DH had to take
Yoda to his appt., which was a whole new experience for both of them.
The first mistake he made was get the carrier out of the garage & plop
in down in the living room. He spent the next hour looking for Yoda
and was late for the appointment. Of course. Rule #1: Never let them
see the carrier until you're ready to put them in it.
Anyway. Yoda had some kind of trauma to the eye, probably a scratch
that caused it. I thought this was pretty good news since it was very
treatable with drops. His blood work & exam showed that he was in
pretty good shape for his age. That was good news too.

Poor Larry ;-D  Glad to read that Yoda's problem is treatable with drops.
My optomitist prescribed some eye drops for when my eyes really act up from
my allergies.  I got up this morning and guess what I needed....yup gully
washer rain and my eyes felt like I'd turned the lids inside out while
asleep.  Couldn't help but think about Yoda and hope that his eyes didn't
hurt that much.

Pam S. still asking the owners for purrs for Yoda's eyes.

Aww, thanks for purrs. I never thought about his eyes hurting, since
they weren't gunky or anything, but I think they did. He seemed to
squinch at light more. Dang cats. They are so stoic and hide illness
so well. HOpe your eyes feel better too.

This makes me wonder if cats can suffer from "dry eyes" like humans do.

That's about the best news there could be. So glad it was just a

Good to hear it! (But sorry you have a weird flu - feel better soon!)

Roxy's going back to the vet tomorrow for another look at *her* eye.
It doesn't look terrible, but it's not all better, either. She can keep
it open, and she appears to be seeing out of it, but it's still somewhat
discolored (kind of a pinkish-yellowish hue to her normally green eye),
and from time to time, I see the conjunctiva peeking out where it doesn't
belong! (Not horribly swollen like it was at first.)

She's had about 6 weeks of antibiotics (both topical and oral), plus
anti-inflammatory ointment, and drops for pain. I don't know what is
going to make her get better, poor girl! :(

Still?  That's not very good!  I hope this trip will help them clear
