Roomba plus cats

Mark Edwards - 25 Mar 2007 03:16 GMT I picked up a Roomba - one of those little robotic vacuum cleaners - last week, and finally charged it up and set up a schedule for it today.
While it was charging, Dulce Mae stepped on the "Clean" button, and it starte dits cycle. Dulce Mae sat back on the couch while all the boys ran and hid. I turned it off and put it back on the charger.
Finally, it was all charged up, and its scheduled cleaning time came up. Slowly, it backed out of the charger and did a few circles, as it started its cleaning.
Little Feet hot footed it out of the way. Dulce Mae laid down on the arm of the couch, waiting for it to approach. When it did, she swatted at it a couple of times (brave girl!). Little Boy climbed to the top of the cat tree. Buster decided that he was safe in his chair, but kept a close eye on it.
The Roomba was still cleaning, going under the couche, the dresser, the bed and into corners, when Bucky came to the window to come inside.
Frantically, he ran into the kitchen to get a bite or two. He hurried back into the living room, panic written all over his face and looking over his shoulder. He told us all "There's a robot loose in the house! Run for your lives!"
Eventually all the cats realized it was staying in the back of the house for a whioe, and settled down. When it did come back down the hallway, they calmly but watchfully moved away from it.
I think this will be a fun little toy... er, appliance (big grin).
Hugs and Purrs, Mark

It does a great job on pet fur! The Roomba will not replace a standard vac for deep-down cleaning, but it is very effective at picking up pet hair (yay!!) and surface dirt. You do have to pick up papers and get electric cords out of its way, but it's much more effective than one would expect.
As to my two furbabies: They basically ignore it. Both get as far away as possible from my upright vac (Dyson), but neither is bothered at all by the Roomba.

Stormmee - 25 Mar 2007 15:33 GMT and FYI ours had an accident wherein it went to the bridge, we suspect it got a dose of cat pee but aren't sure, when DH called seeing about repairs they informed us that they do NOT repair, she ask him some questions and then said fine, here is your number.. DH says why do I need a number, she says... send it to us, keep your accessories including batteries and we send you a new one... new one works like a charm... Lee, totally thrilled with their customer service

Roomba plus cats equals entertainment. :o) We got a Roomba in February, with much the same results as you described.
Here are the posts, the camera phone pic that I sent to my blog following the Roomba's debut:

The cats are decidedly NOT elated about the new Roomba. As the whirring silver horseshoe-crab crosses the dining room, Stanley keeps a wary eye on the monster from a safe distance, and Captain breaks cover from his hideaway behind the box.
Presuming all goes well, it'll be set to run while Mark and I are at work and the cats are in the basement. But I want to actually SEE it in action, before we let it run unattended.
I'm doing my best to convince the Kitty Committee that I'm laughing *with* them. ;o) I don't think they're buying it, however.

P.S. OMG, I'm laughing my head off!
The Roomba finished vacuuming and was sitting quietly, charging on its base. After a few minutes, Captain and Stanley decided that now that the Trilobite Monster seemed to be safely asleep and quiet, it was time to give it a closer examination.
Picture two Stripey Critters cautiously circling around a Roomba, sniffing it warily. Now picture one of them, I'm not sure which because I didn't see it, deciding to get a closer look and trying to step on the device.
Whichever kitty did that had the misfortune of standing right ON the big "clean" button that activates the robot. All I knew is suddenly I heard the little electronic happy-music that precedes the Roomba's embarking on a vacuuming mission. The motor whirred to life, and the Roomba started moving.
Captain and Stanley might have set a new Feline Land Speed Record just now, trying to get as far away from the now-awakened Trilobite Monster as their little paws could carry them.
We shut the device off and returned it to its charging base, since it was nowhere near recharged when the cats accidentally activated it. It's been a while since I've laughed this hard. :o) Poor kitties... but maybe they'll let the Trilobite Monster nap undisturbed from now on.

LOL! Stanley looks like the braver one in the picture there. I've been wondering where you were, Donna. I see now that you've been hiding out in your own blog instead of posting about Captain and Stanley here. Shame on you! ;)

Stormmee - 25 Mar 2007 16:54 GMT first of all you set it on a schedule for as often as you want. We got ours for $99.00 so not that much. It works wonderful. Lee

(I.E.,, "I only vacuum once a year..." Besides, it scares Ketzl so I've promised only to vacuum while he's on vacation in the Bahamas.)
Also, can I ask a favor? If you top-post can you insert a blank line between your reply and the original post(s)? It helps to set it off. (After, that is, we've scrolled down only to find it's not at the bottom.)
Some of use have difficulty seeing. Thanks.

Stormmee - 26 Mar 2007 04:27 GMT I am sorry, I thought you were serious, and I gave you wrong information in the first post, it was actually $ 79.00... the reason I didn't get the joke is because I don't think until this thing we did it that often... we have dust dinosaurs not dust bunnies...
the reason I top post is because my screen reader doesn't cooperate with bottom posting I will try and remember to put in the blank line... but some of us don't see at all... and please never mention where the cat vacations, my cats occasionally read with me and I don't want them getting any ideas.

Lee Wow, it costs less than those Hoover Windtunnel upright vacuums that people sometimes talk about here (I have a Windtunnel - works nice, but it's a little bulky).

Stormmee - 26 Mar 2007 04:27 GMT remember that when you are looking at them there are several models, go and look at their site and decide which you want then really shop around, and if you buy it off the net make sure to look for a coupon code as there some that are in the 25 to30 $ range, Lee

Stormmee - 26 Mar 2007 04:27 GMT yes I did but if you look on line the basic model is very reasonable, Lee
> >>first of all you set it on a schedule for as often as you want. We got > >>ours [quoted text clipped - 8 lines] > > MaryL Stormmee - 26 Mar 2007 04:27 GMT No not regularly, you can get the basic model for around $1.25.00 We actually got ours for $79.00 it was the display model at Sam's club... I couldn't justify the regular price. the one we got is the green one that normally sells for about $279.00 When we called to ask if the store had them and at what price the manager said they had the display at $99.00 but if we would pick it up today he would knock off twenty bucks, DH said sold and we went and got it, no box or accessories... when we got there it was waiting... clerk says you got a steal, the manager looked at the ticket wrong... it was clearance for $199.00 but since he told you $79.00 that is what you pay... bonus, several weeks later I get a call is this, no let me get him... I assumed it was call about our business and DH deals with them better than I do. he gets asked if he was the one who bought the floor model... yes... well if you want its box and the accessories we found we have them at the service desk for you... got everything but the owners manual, a second battery, extra brushes, a virtual wall, the other charger where it goes and charges itself... oh and lest I forget the remote control... Make Levees, Not War
jofirey - 25 Mar 2007 21:07 GMT > I picked up a Roomba - one of those little robotic vacuum cleaners - > last week, and finally charged it up and set up a schedule for it > today. We had a Roomba several years ago and it was more trouble than it was worth. Got stuck a lot. The battery didn't last very long. And the dust/dirt container was way to small.
Have those things improved in the newer models? Charlie would have a fit if I got another one and we didn't like it. But I can always make it be his idea if necessary.

MaryL - 25 Mar 2007 22:43 GMT >> I picked up a Roomba - one of those little robotic vacuum cleaners - >> last week, and finally charged it up and set up a schedule for it [quoted text clipped - 9 lines] > > Jo Yes, they have been improved, but they can still get stuck if your furniture is just the right (or "wrong") height or if you leave small cords on the floor. The dust container is larger than the original, and the batteries charge much more quickly and stay charged longer (but still cannot be described as "long-lasting"). Mine does a good job of cleaning pet hair. However, I will never leave mine running when I am not home -- I can't imagine one hurting my cats, but I won't leaving anything like that on unless I am in the vicinity. I just turn it on and let it run while I am working on the computer or doing other work in the house.
