First of all, purrs and good thoughts and wishes for those who want or need
them.
We've been home for a couple of weeks now. Just couldn't get online until
today. Rob's cancer is terminal, it is a matter of months, though we hope
that he beats the odds and is one of the 14% who last longer than 6 months
after diagnosis. He is here under hospice care and has finally been
declared at 100% disabled. This took a lot of work and letters from active
duty service members as well as Rob's neurologist and neurosurgeon. Guess
the bozo over there didn't believe the oncologist that has been treating Rob
for several years now.
So he gets more money a month, though they gave him half of what everyone
figured out from the information given us by the VA (including a VA rep) as
a settlement. Oh well, it paid the re-finance fee and made it possible for
us to keep the house and at a lower monthly payment.
He has his own hospital bed, wheel chair, potty chair, bath chair, walker,
walker basket, bed table, and care chart. He also has his own hospice
nurse, social worker, and CNA. My house has never been so over run. It
depresses me. We also are getting more traffic from the religious nuts and
solicitors. I think I need to get the swords out again.
The cats love the new toys. There is a floating population of 1 to 4 cats
sleeping with him at any one time. They love riding up and down on the
level and angle adjusters. Pine Cone tried to surf the bed table, but it
wouldn't move for him. Sonya has discovered where we store Rob's sodas
under his bed and sleep on the boxes. Huey insists that Rob is his human,
especially now that the evil woman and the blonde wench have brought him
back. Tanada prefers to sleep with me in the library/Mike's room. Mike is
living on the living room sofa. Speedy has discovered that the platform for
the wheelchair ramp into the living room is a great place to sleep. PC is
in here with us most of the time now. Dynamics have changed among us all.
I know that we'll find a sort of balance, but it doesn't seem like it right
now. Right now, only Huey and Merlin are sharing the bed with Rob and his
laptop. Glad that he can get online with it. If you want to email him (and
when I asked if he wanted emails from you all, he said "Please, yes." No
guarantees on answering them.
I have decided that making a scrap book is an art form and I am not artistic
in that direction. I did make one of his cards and the pictures he
received. Jean, we still can't get over the Christmas cactus that lives on
your veranda. It's amazing. Rob drooled over your grand kid picture. I
suspect that he'd like to have one or three. He also got a kick out of
Henri RB's fascination with TV and loved your pictures of him as well.
Am on leave of absence from work and school. The medical staff and I agree
that Rob needs me here for what time he has left. Not only that, but I need
me here with him. He is doing pretty well, though he has problems with
finding the words he wants to use and his speech is slower than it was.
There is a long story about the medical mess up that helped put him that
way, but I get mad all over again whenever I tell it.
Again purrs and good thoughts and wishes from all of us here at chez Shirk.

Pam,
Thanks for the update. I've been thinking about you Shirks a lot and was
about to send you an email.
It's interesting, isn't it, how resourceful and resilient cats can be. They
seem to consider Rob's equipment a new toy. I'm sure they appreciate having
him back and will take on the nurse cat duties.
We'd love to send Rob an email if you will send us his address. You can
send it to my email. I assume you'd rather not post it here.
We are sending purrs and prayers for strength and peace to all of you.

Pam,
I thought I'd send a photo of all of us on Genesis last summer. We so
enjoyed visiting with the two of you.

We really enjoyed visiting you as well. Rob said something obscene when I
told him about Jim this morning. He remembers you two well and wishes the
best for you all.

Tell Rob not to worry about Jim. Tell him Jim is under the watchful eye of
a good doctor and is doing O.K.
Tell him to be on the lookout for the photos.
On a different topic, yesterday I saw Rosie rabbit kicking one of the
snakes you made. Those snakes are tough. Every so often I empty the 'nip
and wash them and refill them.

So glad to see you back, Pam. I so wish the news was better, but we will
be purring hard for Rob to beat the odds. It sounds like the cats are
being very good nurse cats, or maybe more like hospital clowns.

Pam, my heart goes out to you and Rob. So far it looks like I may be

Hi Pam
I know exactly what you mean, between visits from CICT (soon to be DOT if
they take him, Dave has a 90 minute interview on Wednesday to see if they
will), chirpodists, physio, OT and anyone else I have forgotten (There was a
psychiatrist who spent so long talking about Dave's drinking habits "It's
been noted that you had a can of lager at 5 in the evening, what was that
about?" that we both ended up having a beer at 11.30 in the morning just
after he left- then again he did say he didn't think he needed to see Dave
again). It does feel like your home is not your own. I'm just glad I can go
to work and get away from most of it but Dave has to put up with it all the
time

Don't know what a CICT or DOT is, but do you ever find yourself wanting to
do something just to say "so there!" like drinking a beer in front of them.
I wanted to offer the Time Warner Cable guy one the other day. He was
supposed to be installing cable and phone and was making comments on Rob's
TV viewing as well. I wanted to find a porn channel.......

Lesley - 26 Mar 2007 16:10 GMT
>Don't know what a CICT or DOT is,
Sorry you just get so used to the acronyms- Community Intermediate Care Team
(who he is seeing now) and Disability Options Team (I think- he's being
interviewed to see if they'll take over on Wednesday- don't know what happens
if they say "No")
but do you ever find yourself wanting to
>do something just to say "so there!" like drinking a beer in front of them.
Not with the CICT, they'd laugh and grumble they were on duty or they'd have
one as well. Steve became a dad and shows with pride a picture of baby
holding a pint glass. Seeing this led Coco to tell about how he trained his
toddler to fetch and open his beer but the little tyke would take a sip
everytime. Their current target is to get Dave down the "Half Moon" for a
drink- as you can imagine he gets on very well with them!
There have been a couple where I've sat and glared at the fridge longing to
do that but Dave says not to (spoilsport!). The psychiatrist was one, it was
the same guy who asked Dave at the hospital if reading SF, listening to rock
music and watching horror movies had caused his illness.
When he came round the flat someone (I cannot tell a lie it was me) had left
a large black tome with the words "Encylopaedia Vampirica" displayed in big
letters right where he could see it. I was waiting for him to ask Dave about
his bizarre taste in literature before informing the idiot that it was my
book alas he did not rise to the bait
But I understand exactly what you say. Because I'm usually at work and Dave
can't quite get the stairs yet, they have keys and some of them don't knock-
the other week I had the day off work and I greeted the arrival of someone
with "What if we'd been having sex?"
This got me a very funny look........

Words can't express...but you and Rob both most have iron girders holding you
up inside, and I respect that almightily.
Many prayers for you both; and for those good souls who come to do the
caretaking.
Please don't forget to take care of yourself while all this is going on.
Blessed be,

Thanks, surreal is the most accurate description I've seen of this mess. I
got an invitation (ad) to receive a national magazine for three years for
the price of one, and bawled. It is just so wrong, somehow.

It's always the things you don't expect that will throw you. The day after my
mum died, we were at her house and I went to make a cup of tea and the next
thing my brothers heard me sobbing my heart out. So they came and patted me
on the back and all I could say was "It was the mint sauce!"
My mum used to cook a roast dinner went I went to see her on a Sunday and she
liked mint jelly and I can't stand the stuff (Too sweet) so she got a jar of
mint sauce just for me and as I opened the fridge door and saw "My" jar of
mint sauce next to "her" mint jelly..It set me well and truly off

better, as we are never prepared. I'm just so sorry that Rob will endure
this journey.
I wish you both the strength and hope to see you through this.
