I keep doing this thing where I fall asleep in the chair in the baby's room
while nursing ... and he takes a long time to nurse. Lastnight, I was in
Andrew's room for 4 hours before I woke up and got out of there. Otis was
sitting by the door when I came out.
I had just enough time to get changed into PJ's before Andrew woke up and
needed to eat again. As I walked back into the room, cooing to Andrew that
it was OK, I happened to look back to see Otis' head spinning around in
circles. He was sure it was his turn but was foiled by that darn baby
again!!!
For 45 minutes, he yowled at the door, clawed the outside of the door, and
tried to pry it open from the bottom. He didn't stop until I was finished
and back out. Luckily, Andrew is a sound sleeper.
Satisfied to have his hot water bottle back, Otis then proceeded to cover
all my breathing holes with his fur as he settled in for the night on my
head.

Pardon my ignorance here, but why doesn't Otis come into the room with you
and the baby?

If I can answer for a very tired mom, it isn't a good idea to leave a cat
alone in the room with a sleeping baby as young as Andrew. And it is a
whole lot easier to just not let Otis into the room than it would be to
remember to make sure he was not left in there when one very sleepy Mom
heads back to bed at 4am to try to get a couple of hours sleep.

I knew I should have explained that! He yowls in the room as well. He
tries to jump up on my lap, onto the nursing pillow, and then onto Andrew...
and he doesn't care where he stands. If he doesn't get my attention, then
onto the change table or into the crib, both of which I'm trying to keep cat
hair free.

Otis is a wild man! ;)
This reminds me of how sad I am that my nephew is allergic to cats (my
brother is, too). They can't come in my house. Evan's other grandma
has a friendly little calico Maine Coon named Sneakers (really
little-- probably the smallest Maine Coon in existence ;)), and he
adores her, but he can't really spend any time with her.
Instead he has two plush cats-- Upstairs Kitty and Downstairs Kitty.
When I'm down there, he asks to see pictures of Stinky and Dante.

That's a real unfortunate combination - a cat-lover who is severely
allergic. I've had friends like that. I don't know what I'd do if it
were me.
I do have a mild cat allergy, although most cats don't affect me
much. But occasionally I'll meet a cat who does trigger my allergies.
Even then, it's not serious - I don't have asthma attacks or anything,
I just get itchy eyes and the sniffles. Luckily, none of my own cats
produce this reaction, and I can put face in their fur with no problem.
Last night I was visiting friends who have this wonderful cat named
Van Gogh - he's a former feral who had apparently been TNR'ed, and you
all know what they do to indicate neutering. :) I just adore this cat,
and the feeling is completely mutual. I'm known as "Auntie Joyce". When
I show up, he gets on the couch, gets comfy, and settles in for some
adoring gazing (at me). He's a beautiful orange guy, with sage-green
eyes that match exactly the shade of his humans' living room couch. :)
Wish I had a photo to show you - maybe his humans have one online I
can stick on my website.
Oh, I had a point with that story, didn't I? The point was, I am somewhat
allergic to Van Gogh, and whenever I visit these friends - which always
involves hours of petting him, because he never, ever gets tired of it -
I end up with red, itchy eyes and a runny nose. It's worth it, though!

Do make sure you wash and dry your hands thoroughly before you leave their
house. And try to wear stuff that can go directly into the washer. Then
you can visit him lots more often.

LOL! Poor Otis, so hard to share his Meowmy with a barekitten.

Well, at least he kept you from falling asleep during the second feeding.
;-)
Hang in there. Eventually you'll get to spend the whole night in bed again.

Wanna bet? Fifty years later, I still wake up for "the 2AM
feeding".....or something. MLB

I think you need the services of an exorcist. :)
Poor Otis. Poor you! Hope you can get some rest...

Poor Otis, he doesn't understand you're raising another slave. Purrs that
Andrew soon sleeps through the night and everyone is happier.

Would he be content sitting on your lap while you breastfeed? Or does he
want you all to himself? ;-)
