Pat - 20 Mar 2007 13:43 GMT I hope and pray that none of our kitties had any of the toxic food that is being recalled, or if they did, they were not harmed beyond repair. I checked all of ours and did not find a problem. It's kind of hard for me to believe anything can go wrong with wheat gluten, but if that's what they say it is....

Right now I'm really glad that Sonny is so picky (translation: spoiled). We used to try other brands, but he'd turn his nose up at them, even the expensive ones. So, a while back we stopped trying and now only buy his 4 favourite flavours of canned Friskies.
Hope everybody else is ok too.

Sometimes going for the cheap standard is a good thing. :~)

The three freaky furry fuzzbutts are their usual happy selves... since they've always refused point blank to eat 'chunky' catfood (they lick the gravy off and leave the food behind) they've never had the suspect varieties of science diet. I'm wondering if maybe I should stop giving them gooshyfood altogether for a bit in case they were wrong about the cause, but I'm sure we'd have a revolt on our hands and we'd probably wake up minus a few toes :P

I had used Fancy Feast for years but mainly Tuna , Chicken & Tuna and Ocean whitefish and tuna. She started refusing them so often, I decided it wasn't worth the bother and expense. I did try a can of Friskies but she turned her nose up at that too. She eats Iams Weightloss and Iams hairball. For a treat, she accepts Meowmix kibble (a small amount). She is a big girl and seems healthy. MLB

None of our regular brands was on the list. It didn't really surprise me that it's possible for any mold issues with a grain product to cause pet poisoning. After all, mold on hay will kill horses. What surprised me was *how many* different brands were contaminated by one, single supplier.

Irulan - 20 Mar 2007 16:19 GMT Thanks for the concern, Pat. We are doing fine, none of the stuff Lily eats is part of the banned list. We are glad to hear that your furbabies are also all fine.

A friend of mine on another list has lost 2 of hers to this awful thing this week. Apparently the company knew about it way back in December and did nothing.
Purrs for the cats that have gone to the bridge would be appreciated.

If your friend has proof that they knew and did nothing, a lawsuit should ensue. Maybe there is some class action she could get into. Not that any proceeds could ease her pain but the point is to hit the perps in the pocket -- HARD.

I [quoted text clipped - 14 lines] > -- > Posted via Mailgate.ORG Server -http://www.Mailgate.ORG That's terrible, Helen! I'm so sorry for your friend AND for her poor cats. A stink HAS to be raised about this by us all. The contamination was so widespread, it's a miracle that MORE cats have not been harmed or killed by the bad batch of food. Not least to make sure the pet food companies will be more careful of what they use in the future. Lots of people simply don't have the budget to feed their animals a fresh food diet. I love my girls, but I don't want to have to go broke feeding them. If the companies knew and didn't do anything about it, then a pox on all their heads!
I feel very lucky NOT to have bought any of the contaminated food, as wouldn't you know it, my girls absolutely LOVE the chunks in gravy style food much more than ordinary wet food. There but for the grace of God go they!

Behavior, appetites and litterbox use 100% normal. I had stocked up on Science Diet (My regular brand) about three weeks ago, but after checking all the cans I've got on hand, I didn't get any of the bad stuff. I only found out about the contaminated food last week with everyone else, so I figure any harm to them from eating it would have showed up quite a while ago.
A friend of mine in New Jersey had a sick cat earlier this month, and her vet couldn't figure out what the trouble was. Now they think Arwen must have eaten some of the bad food. The cat is okay and on the mend. The mystery is, my friend has two cats, and the other one never got sick at all.

MoMo - 20 Mar 2007 21:54 GMT Unfortunately my food is on the list (Iams wet packets) and the plant code is the code that is recalled, but the date codes are not within the recalled limits. I spoke with Iams and they told me I am fine but I am still a nervous wreck. I have not fed them Iams since Saturday morning (when I discovered the recall) and the rep at Iams told me that they found that the cats that were affected showed symptoms within 2 to 24 hours and exposure. Such a short period of time! I called my vet this morning and was also told that enough time has passed without symptoms and everything "should" be okay but I can always bring them in for a blood test if they show any symptoms. Please keep my boys in your thoughts. I would be devastated if anything happened to them!

Have they actually determined that's what it was? Last I heard, they really didn't know, because everything they checked tested out okay. Fortunately my girls won't eat any of the premium brands, and since I moved to Arizona I've found Friskies and Whiskas (which they prefer) so much cheaper here than in California that I haven't even tried to introduce them to the supermarket labels.

Where are you now, Pat? They seem to be opening stores all over the country, even though most are in the Western U.S. and on the East Coast. The closest TJ's to me is in the St. Louis area, around 250 miles away. If I still had the ex's little car and if gas was a little cheaper I might be able to get there once or twice a year.

For anyone who feeds their cats Trader Joe's catfood (mine would never touch it - probably because it's cheaper than name brands), here's the URL for TJ's statement on the recall: http://www.traderjoes.com/action_issues.asp#PetFood

SO scary!! Yeah, I had some PAWS and some IAMS cans on hand but thankfully all the wrong varieties. That was a huge relief. I called the discount store where I get most of my catfood and read off the list of products so they could check their shelves.
