I'm sorry to report that due to Jim's recent medical problem, we will not
resume our cruise this year. Instead, we have found an apartment and will
build a house here while Jim recuperates.
He is doing well, but needs periodic blood tests and will bleed easily if he
dings himself while doing boat maintenance or other activities. This would
pose major difficulties to manage while traveling as we were.
With heavy hearts, we have decided to offer Genesis for sale as soon as we
can get to Myrtle Beach to get our personal stuff off the boat.
We hope to get another boat in the future and complete our trip. We'll be
happy to bring you all along with us once again through the updates.
On a different, but related topic, I'd like to add that once again, we have
found a place to rent that will accept our kitties without any mention of
declawing them first, which, of course, we wouldn't do. In fact, non of the
places we visited that accept pets had that requirement. I hope this
encourages anyone who is looking for a place to rent. Reasonable places are
out there.

I am so sorry to read this, as I was a big fan of your travelogue. But
OTMIH (on the more important hand), and FWIW, I think this is
absolutely the right decision. I shudder to think what would have
happened if Jim had fallen ill while you were on the water, and I
don't even know the man!
But at least you're where you have friends. That's very lucky - if
you're building a house, it sounds as if it's going to be a long
recuperation.
Maybe you can resume in a year or two...
(Is it an option to lease Genesis, instead of selling her?)

Oh I was furious when I was looking for a place to live last summer.
It seemed that everywhere I looked either didn't allow pets, took dogs
but not cats, or required cats be declawed. And just about everyone
had weight limits on the pets!

Hi Jeanne,
We want to resume our journey in a year or two.
We thought about leasing the boat but we are half a continent away from it.
We believe it would be too much of a liability and worry to manage it.

Very true! I used to know someone who owned a house in one state but then
had to move several states away. They attempted to rent the existing house
"long distance" and it was a disaster! The house was basically trashed.
IIRC they got it cleaned back up and thought about hiring a property
management firm to take care of the rental, drop by periodically to make
sure the property was being maintained, etc. But the management fees were
outrageous so they sold the house instead.

Some of you may remember many months ago our neighbors moved out, abandoning
a cat and kittens, other pets, and leaving the house in a shambles.
The owners of the house have done a ton of work, and paid to have a lot of
work done as well. The house had to be nearly gutted. (And its only about
a twenty year old house)
It still isn't finished. I've heard that possibly the owners are going to
retire soon and may move back in. It would be nice for us as they were good
neighbors.

I'm sorry your plans needed to change. But it will be exciting getting a
new house together. Hope you find a buyer for Genesis right away. And that
Jim does well on the meds and has no further clot problems.
I'm guessing right now you are most grateful to still have him with you.
And both kind on pins and needles over getting the meds right and avoiding
potential problems. But you will find you can hold your breath just so long
and then you will start to relax and not worry so much. Do get him a
medical ID bracelet if he will wear one.

You've got that right. We've had quite a scare.
It had us spinning for a while, but we are sorting things out.
The bottom line is we are together now and plan to make the most our time
together.
Oh, yeah, I had the I.D. bracelet on his wrist before he was released from
the hospital.

I'm so sorry that you have to put your plans on hold for now, but I
understand the reasons very well. Purrs that you will be able to take up
your trip again in the near future.

I'm sorry about the cruise, and the boat, but it does seem like a wise
decision. I'm glad you found a place that accepts your kitties, and hope it
won't be too long before you can complete your trip.

I'm sorry to hear you're postponing your cruising plans, but I hope that
Jim will recover 100%. I bet you you'll be looking for a new boat sooner
than you think.

I'm sorry to hear that you are not able to continue your cruise this
year. I was so looking forward to your updates and reading about your
adventures. But of course Jim's health must come first. I hope you are
able to continue another time.
Great news about finding an apartment though. And good luck with your
house build. We are in the middle of ours and the walls are coming up
tomorrow!!!

You are getting progress photos right?
It will seem strange when the walls go up. Like the rooms just got too
small.

Annie, I'm sorry to hear that the situation calls for it, but I think
it's the right move at this point. I'm hoping both of you can hang
around so we can meet in person again.

Hi Tak,
It's not as spontaneous or easy as you might think. We already had an empty
lot in a new development when we left on our trip. We planned to build
after we returned. Apparently, we have returned.
We had planned and worked on Genesis for years before we started our
live-aboard cruising. We didn't just jump on a boat and go. Not being able
to continue our cruise is a huge disappointment, but we have had learned the
life is a series of detours with lots of potholes.
We plan carefully, but we usually have a "Plan B," too.
Whatever happens, we try to remember what is really important.
What puts things into perspective is that a week ago Sunday night, all that
mattered to me was whether Jim would still be with me on Monday morning. We
were blindsided by this one.
I'm so grateful that he made it and we can go on. I don't have a Plan B for
the alternative.

Annie, I'm so glad that you still have Jim with you. Pulmonary
embolisms are nothing to fool with. My DH had a pulmonary embolism on
March 4, 2000 and he didn't make it. It's too bad that your cruising
days are on indefinite hold, but so much safer for Jim until the
doctors get this problem straightened out.

Thank you, I know he is in a much better place than this old world. It
was very sudden. He stood up, sat back down, and slumped over. He
was gone before the EMS got here. I think it was probably more of a
shock to the kids than it was to me. He had hernia surgery 10 days
before and wasn't bouncing back the way he should have.

I'm glad you found a place :) I've never run into a problem with apartments
renting to people with pets and certainly never saw a declawed only
requirement.
There *is* usually a weight limit (pertaining to dogs) and I can understand
it. I had a neighbor with a huge (must have been 100-115 lb.) black lab in
his apartment. There is no place for a dog that size to run at all. Having
a large fenced patio doesn't constitute room for a dog that size, IMHO. I
believe the limit in my complex is 30 lbs for a dog and no more than 2 furry
furrends per apartment. A woman I used to work with had 6 cats and just
couldn't understand why apartments didn't want her to move in.
She turned out to be a real nutcase, BTW, and certainly not because of her
cats! She was fired and the new guy who inherited her phone extension at
the office... she started leaving obscene messages in his voicemail in the
middle of the night! This poor dude called us over to his desk and said,
"Hey, guys, listen to this!" He was in shock, poor guy. Of course we all
recognized her voice right off the bat.
