More info? Or maybe just lots of info in 1 place?

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/03/17/petfood.recall.ap/index.html

The major cat and dog food recall is for what's described as "cuts and
gravy" type food - chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small
pouches between December 3 and March 6 throughout the US, Canada and
Mexico.

The food was made by Menu Foods (owned by Menu Foods Income Fund of
Ontario, Canada), which makes pet food for 17 of North America's top
20 retailers, and sold in stores operated by Kroger, Safeway,
Wal-Mart, and PetSmart, AMONG OTHERS.

It also makes food for top branded pet food companies SUCH AS Proctor
and Gamble.  Proctor & Gamble as announed a recall of certain 3, 5.5,
6, and 13.2 ounce canned and 3 and 5.3 ounce foil pouch cat and dog
wet food products sold under the Iams and Eukanuba brands. The
recalled products have the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by
the plant code 4197.

The recall covers foods made at company plants in Emporia, Kansas and
Pennsauken, New Jersey (they also have 1 other US and 1 Canadian plant
not involved in the recall). The FDA is trying to nail down all the
brand names involved. There is a list of specific brands recalled by
Menu Foods, in addition to P&G's Iams and Eukanuba recall, on their
website at www.menufoods.com. They also have a consumer information
phone number 1-866-825-2708.

I don't see Iams OR Eukanuba in the cat-food list, so how did you know
those were being recalled?

I have never heard of a single one of the brand names listed in the
cat-food list. Aren't some of these names of stores, not cat food brands?
Winn Dixie is a supermarket chain. And so is Demoulas Market Basket.
I don't understand whether this list refers to food brands or store
names.

(I posted the same question in another post, but I want to make sure
someone sees this and can answer, if anyone knows.)

Thanks,
Joyce

I read the article on the CNN website (link at the top of my original
message). :-)

The 6th and 7th paragraphs say:

>Menu Foods said it makes pet foods for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers.
>It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies,
[quoted text clipped - 5 lines]
>The recalled products bear the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by

The only store names I've seen are in the CNN article, which says

>The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Co., Safeway
>Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., AMONG OTHERS, Henderson
>said.

(EMPHASIS ADDED by Jeanne)

Everything on the list you quoted from, including "Winn Dixie" is a
brand. Apparently, Winn Dixie sells Winn Dixie brand cat food, and I
bet Demoulas Market Basket (which I've never heard of ^_^) sells a
brand of cat food by that name.  I know Kroger sells Kroger brand cat
food, and Safeway sells Safeway brand cat food.  I think Wal-Mart
calls its house brand "America's Choice", which is also on the list.

According to the CNN article, they're still trying to nail down all
the brands, which is probably why all store chains involved are not
listed.

Thanks for the correction.  (Special Kitty is on the list too)

Someone around here sells America's Choice brand, because I've seen
it. (Target? Meijer? Sam's Club?)  oh well, doesn't matter.

It is my understanding that Proctor & Gamble made a voluntary recall "to
be on the safe side".

Purrs that no more kitties suffer through  this mishap.  MLB

Hills Science Diet has recalled SOME of their catfood... only the Pet
Supermarket had big signs up that they weren't selling ANY of it. I'm
not worrying about it because the girls refuse to eat 'chunky' catfood
so they've only ever had two cans of it... my only problem now will be
finding a source to buy them more! They loathed the substitute food I
bought them yesterday.

*****
Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc., Announces Voluntary Participation in Menu
Foods’ Nationwide U.S. recall of Specific Canned Cat Foods.

Topeka, KS (March 17, 2007) – In response to the recent Menu Foods,
Inc. nationwide recall of wet pet foods, Hill’s® Pet Nutrition, Inc.
has announced a voluntary precautionary recall in the United States of
a very small number of canned cat products that are co-manufactured by
Menu.
This recall only affects Science Diet Feline Savory Cuts canned
products in the United States.
Hill’s is voluntarily recalling the following products:

1. Science Diet® Kitten Savory Cuts® Ocean Fish 3 oz. and 5.5 oz.
2. Science Diet® Feline Adult Savory Cuts® Beef 5.5 oz.

4. Science Diet® Feline Adult Savory Cuts® Ocean Fish 5.5 oz.
5. Science Diet® Feline Senior Savory Cuts® Chicken 5.5 oz.

No other Hill’s products are affected by this recall.
Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc., is taking this precautionary step to
protect the health and well being of your pets. Hill’s has received no

are potential signs of kidney failure.
This voluntary product recall involves discontinuation of all retail
sales and product retrieval from consumers. Consumers should stop
using the affected products immediately. Consult with a veterinarian
if any symptoms are present in your pet. All Science Diet products
carry a 100 percent guarantee, and consumers can receive a refund for

I've checked all my cans of Science Diet currently on hand and none of
them have the relevant codes or expiration dates listed above.  I
stocked up on cat food about three weeks ago, and my girls haven't
displayed any signs of health troubles in all that time. Their
favorite foods of course, are the cuts in gravy style that's
apparently causing the problems. Still, they've been tearing around
the apartment after each other and meatloafing on sunny window sills
in apparent good health, their behavior, appetites, litterbox use and
appearance being 100% normal. So while I'm ready to haul them off to
the emergency vet if and when necessary, I'm hoping for the best,
here.  But perhaps I'll get them some dry food next time....
