This afternoon is my final day at my current employer, and tomorrow is our
last full day at our current residence. We're going to load up the truck
this afternoon and tomorrow (Saturday), then bright and early Sunday
morning we're loading ourselves and the kitties into the van and the
truck and leaving California!
We'll be out of touch for a few days. I don't know if we'll have WiFi
access in our motel rooms between CA and IA, so between now and then we'll
sending blanket purrs for those who need them.
With any luck, we'll find WiFi service in our en-route stops. We are
tentatively planning on stopping in Cedar City, UT Sunday night, somewhere
near Denver Monday night, in eastern Nebraska Tuesday night, then at our
new home in Iowa by late Wednesday.
Neither Nancy nor I have ever travelled any distance with 6 cats before,
so purrs for our sanity would be appreciated. It will be easy on me - I'm
driving the big truck, and Harri Roadcat will be my travel partner. Nancy,
though, has to drive the van with the remaining 5 kitties. Yikes!
Anyhow, in the days between now and our arrival in Iowa, everybody please
be safe.

Happy moving! I hope your trip goes smoothly and safely. Do you have a way
to communicate between the two vehicles, so if the one behind has to stop
for some reason the other person knows it?

Cell phones and FRS radios. But we'll be so close together it shouldn't be
a problem to communicate via headlight flashes.

Looks like we got us a CONVOY! Heheh, back in the day when I had to drive
any distance I used a CB radio that my brother had. Plugged into the
cigarette lighter in the car and attached antenna via a magnet on the roof
of the car.
Nope, I didn't have a Big Rig nor a Harri Roadcat! But I did get a trucker
escort from Memphis to Nashville once to visit a friend from High School ;)
Was a couple of guys who switched off doing long-haul driving. They told me
when to slow down, when I could speed up, when to beware of road
construction. That was 20+ years ago; truckers aren't nearly as polite on
the roads these days.
Have a good trip, Dan! Take it slow! There's ice where you're heading.

It sucks that Central Texas is not somewhere in your route! :)

Purrs for a good safe trip! Harri will undoubtedly be intrigued to be on
the road again! Hope Nancy will have the remaining 5 cats secured for her
drive. I cannot imagine travelling any distance with Persia. She screams
and cries the entire way to the vet and that's under 3 miles. Across
country? I cannot imagine! Good luck!

They usually quit crying after the first 3-4 miles :)

It's 5 miles to the vet and Persia is still bellyachin' when we get there!
She wouldn't make a good long-distance travel companion.

Or hours depending on the cat.

It definitely depends on the cat. When Five (DSH tabby) is riding with us
it's been either to TED in a carrier (3 miles) or Thunder Bay, Ontario in a
wire crate (with bedding, litter pan & water bowl, and hand-fed kibble
portioned to manage her weight during inactivity in the crate) (1400 miles)
with occasional rest stops across 2-3 days. The only vocal complaining Five
did on our T-Bay trips was when she was trying to use the small litter pan
while we were driving (we brought along a full-size litter pan for use at
the destination). She's a 10.5 lb cat and the pan had to be small to fit
the crate we could fit in the back seat of the truck's extended cab while
leaving room for her to be comfortable laying down. Mostly Five would sleep
but frequently she would sit up and watch the scenery fly by her window.
Here's to a safe trip for Dan & family!

No they don't. I had to travel once with Topaz (RB), my sister's cat,
and listen to her for a full 65 miles. The only reason Sid(RB) didn't
join in was because he'd had a seizure on the way to the car and was
sleeping it off. So I had to travel in a packed full car, one cat
crying constantly and another cat sleeping like the dead, when I was
almost certain that I'd killed at least one of my sister's cats.
It was a memorable ride. Oh, Sid was fine by the time we got there,
and lived for a few more happy years.

Another thing someone forgot to tell Caliban. The bus ride to go to our
summer island takes 3-4 hours and he complains all they way. Frank used
to be the same.

Correction: To the vet is 5 miles, to the wine shop is 3 miles :) Guess
which one I visited before I wrote 3 miles? Anyway, Persia cries and cries
and cries. I cannot imagine driving across country with her let alone
further than to the vet.

In case you haven't thought of it, each kitty should have the NEW
address on his/her collar in case of, heaven forbid, accidental escape.
