There is a bedroom community in the city where I live which has
a large lake. A whole bunch of ducks, geese and one swan live
on that lake. There are signs all over the community which tell
drivers to stop and let the birds cross the roads to go to the lake.
There are days when a mile long stretch of cars are stopped to let
a bunch of the birds cross the streets.

Last night the only swan in the bunch was hit and left for dead by
a driver. Unfortunately they had to put the swan down as it was too
injured to survive.

My doctor's office is located in that community. This morning I had
to go to have some blood drawn for my annual checkup and as I
was driving through the neighborhood I said a little prayer for the
poor swan.

RB purrs for the poor bird.  Some years ago, one of the swans in our
local park was killed by some delinquent idiots.   Those are big,
feisty swans, and I remember hoping that the poor bird got at least a
piece of the morons before he died.

It is sad how one thoughtless or selfish person can destroy something so many others have been careful to protect.

Awwww!  How sad!  Purrs for the swan's crossing to the RB where there will
be other swan friends waiting.

In a town near to me ( New Braunfels) they were recently starting
construction on   a golf course, they are putting something else
in.... well, turtles in one of the ponds began to leave , making a
trek across the road to  some other pond. traffic was stopped and
snarled, as people were stopping to help the turtles cross the road.
Now there is a sign , picture of a turtle on it and Turtle crossing
written on it....

We get a lot of turtles crossing the road in Florida.  I've helped a couple
across the road myself.

A turtle crossing... that'd be a *long* wait! :)

Joyce - who used to fantasize creating a "snail crossing" in her apartment
complex after seeing too many smashed snails on the walkways - and people
do it on purpose!

Arrgh.  I got mad once in Chinatown when I saw cricket fighting.
Someone said "The crickets would fight anyway."  I said "Well let
them, don't stick them in a little cage together to make them do it."
:P

It was rescuing a swan that got me the Fabulous Furballs. I was temping at an
office and I really didn't know anyone (Didn't really want to get too
friendly anyway, it was a holiday cover and I was only there for 2 weeks) and
this woman walked up to me and asked me if I had the faintest idea how to
rescue a swan. There was a lake at the back of her house and some thugs had
deliberately tied a swan up in fishing line. Well I don't know the first
thing about rescuing swans but I do know how to Google so I found the right
number for her and she called and these people got the swan and untangled him.
(A few days later through, someone presumably the same thugs, shot the female)

Anyway me and this lady got talking and when I mentioned cats, she mentioned
this stray she had been putting food out for who had thanked her for her
kindness by having kittens in her garden shed.

The rest as they say, is history

Sometimes I don't like my own species very much... :(

Outlook Express refused to post my message in reply, presumably because the
original post was in HTML.
It likes plain text for newsgroups.
