What is it with cats and ants??

Every spring, we have a short period of time when these small black ants
try to invade our house. We repel them with little problem (homemade
"ant repellant" made of water, dish soap, pennyroyal oil and habanero
sauce, plus being vigilant about not leaving foodstuffs out where they
can get to them).

They've started this year and I found out when I got to my desk this
morning to find my bottle of water teeming inside & out. (*EEEEK!*)
After bagging and tossing the water bottle (no, I am NOT going to drink
out of it evereverever again, thankyou), I used a paper towel to smash a
bunch of ants still on my desk and tossed the paper towel into the small
wastebasket next to my desk. Then I continued to smash stragglers with
my finger. (By the way, my attitude is that any ant that comes into my
house has expressly stated they want to commit suicide, and my job is to
facilitate that. Generally, I leave bugs alone.)

What has me very confused (and this is the first time I've noticed it)
is this:

- Jezebel hopped up on the desk to say hello and immediately started
rubbing her cheeks on the desktop and licking it.
- Shane did the same thing a little later
- Shane pulled the paper towel out of the garbage and began rolling on
it and licking it and rubbing on it, for all the world as if it were a
catnip toy
- Emma did the same thing a little later (She's still sitting on top of
it with this "mine!" look <g>)

Why do ants make cats act like they've gotten catnip? has anyone else
seen this, or are my cats terminally weird?

Thanks,
Deborah

I'm not a chemist, by any means, but "formic acid" comes to mind immediately.
It has something to do, in certain circumstances, with creating esters. A
good Google search is in order...

However, this does not rule out terminal and innate weirdness in cats.

top posting - half-felt apologies.

I don't know anything about USA ants (I'm in Australia), but different
ants produce different kinds of chemicals - not all ants produce
formic acid, for example.
There is a kind of ant in Australia called the coconut ant that
smells, to humans, just like coconut (the fake kind like you get in
the chocolate "coconut rough").  To our old cat, TedRB, the scent of
these ants was more potent than any catnip (in fact, she didn't react
to normal catnip - she was into the Hard Stuff) - if DH came home from
a field trip in which he had inspected a coconut ant nest Ted would
first sniff his clothing, then rub herself in it and, if DH wasn't
quick enough getting disrobed, she would bite and claw the clothing
until he has surrendered it to her.  G*d forbid if he ever got any
scent onto his skin!
One of the [many] chemicals produced by coconut ants is known to be
close kin to the active chemical in catnip.  I'm sure it's the same
for at least some ant species from other parts of the world.

So, I'd hazard a guess that your cats aren't wierd, but that they are
superb opportunists!

There's a plant that grows on the forest floor that caused this same
behavior with my owners. It's some sort of fungus. But maybe it wasn't the
fungus. Maybe the fungus only smelled like ants that had been on it!

Whenever I see TuTu sitting quietly and staring at the floor, I know she
is watching an ant (ants).  I have had about a month now of trying to
exterminate tiny  ants.,  I have vacuumed, several times a day.  I have
used two brands of ant traps and they still won't go away.  I don't dare
use Raid because of the cat.   They are in the sun room, the hall bathroom
and the kitchen.   They are almost too tiny to see.

Does  anyone have a good remedy?  MLB

You might try my homemade "ant spray". It kills the ones you spray it
on, and seems to repel the rest pretty well. You can also use
diatomaceous earth to keep them from coming in, or boric acid (which
you need to keep the kitties from walking in).

Find out where the ants are coming in. sprinkle the boric acid or diat.
earth about an inch wide across the "path".

Or spray my stuff (*) where they are coming in, and refresh it twice
a day until they stop coming in there. Spray it on any you find
walking around. It doesn't bother the cats (they tend to avoid the area,
but it wouldn't be toxic anyway).

* My ant repellant:  1 pint of water, 3-4 drops of dish detergent, 5-6
drops of pennyroyal oil, 5-6 drops of the hottest hot sauce you can find
(I use After Death Habanero sauce, personally) Shake gently. Has the
side effect of clearing your sinuses also...

I have tried but have been unable to find where they are coming in.
However, I have a theory:  The condo was built on "fill" 45 years ago.
During this winter, I think the building settled a little and disturbed a
nest.  We have crawl spaces under the building and the ants may be coming
up through floor boards.  My place is completely carpeted, so I cannot see
any entry way.  Thanks for the suggestion.  MLB

Thanks.  I'll add it to my list of things to try.  MLb
