The orphaned cat-basket

Inge Grotjahn - 06 Mar 2007 14:15 GMT For a long time the in the subject mentioned cat-basket orphaned. And when I say 'long time' I'm talking about several years! But let me start from the beginning:
We have this lovely cat-basket, which was living in our livingroom. She was residing in it. Someway down the road she didn't like it anymore and didn't want to sleep in it. After it was without any user for quite some time, we put it in the bathroom.
No sooner it was positioned there, Owl found it a lovely resting place for himself. Using it as a sleeping place was even for Owl only a temporary phase, then it was no longer used. Well, not used is not quite correct: the other cats used it as an additonal litterbox:-/
So we cleaned it and it got a new spot in the bathroom on our bathtub. Here it stood for a long time, gathering dust on it.
Dear Husband and I thought about placing it in the basement for good and for all times. We went to our bathroom to get the basket - and found: http://www.gwsystems.com/inge/Images/07030602.jpg http://www.gwsystems.com/inge/Images/07030603.jpg
It seems, that She discovered her basket again. She found out, that she can have her siesta there, undisturbed by all other cats. Conclusion: the basket remains where it is:-)

Jake however loves it. Still I think the money might have been better spent on a cat tree. At least I wouldn't have to keep vacuuming the fur off of that.

This isn't confusing over here in Germany but to all English-speaking it is quite confusing:-) I promise, our next girl-cat will have a proper name:-))

> She looks very contented there. :-) Yes, she does:-) And we are very happy, that She, beeing 12 years old this May, decided to stay in the house for at least the cold period. She has a catflap to come in any time. To let her out, we open the door for her. The Persians are not allowed to go into the 'great out'. They have a catflap to the fenced garden. But She can roam free as she wishes and when she was younger, she preferred to stay outside most of the time. Nowadays She enjoyes the fenced garden more frequently, although she insists in her daily walk in the 'great out'.

I know that Sugar would do this. When we had indoor/outdoor cats (no flap, not done much here), the cats would "knock" but pulling on the outside screen door and letting the corner bang back in. If it was winter, they scratched on the door, just like the dogs.
Marina - 07 Mar 2007 03:44 GMT > Snoopy has a catflap, at 17 she thinks the proper way to use it is to rattle > it until a hoomin opens the door. :-) LOL! My 'little sister' Thompson (1970-1987) used to rattle the letterbox on the front door when she couldn't be bothered to walk around the house to come in the back door.

My grandmother had one of those doors with a mini-window, and her cat Pandora used to leap up to the window and look in. She would be hanging on to the window frame with her front paws, braced with her back paws. You'd here a thump, look up, and see a little cat head looking in the window. ;) The front of the door was covered with scratches. ;)

We lived in deep country, with no lights outside except for those that came naturally. So...whenever Dynamite wanted to come in, he'd jump and hang onto the screen door. The funny part was, when you opened the door to look, all that could be seen was two glowing eyes - the rest was just swallowed up in the blackness outside! It was real spooky if you didn't know what you were looking at.

When I was a kid we had a stray cat live with us for a while (we had quite a few throughout my childhood, he was just one of them). He had a lot of character. When he wanted to come in, he would jump up onto the screen door and hang from the screen, with his little kitty face peeking in through the regular door's small window, just like Theresa's cat. It was so cute!
After we'd had this cat for a year or so, he just disappeared one day. My parents explained to us that since he was a stray cat, he didn't like to stay with one family for too long, so he'd packed his bags and moved on to other places and other families. And I believed it! Now when I look back, I wonder what really happened to him?

I know you wonder about the kitty now, but I think this is such an excellent story to tell a child. :) There must have at least been a feeling of closure compared to say, that time when Smudge went missing.
