Rat.  RAT!  RAT!!!

I was down feeding and watering the chickens this morning, Boyfie was
helping of course, when I heard a loud squeak and Boyfie came out from
behind the woodheap with the largest rat he has caught yet dangling from his
mouth.
He hot-footed to the house with it (he always does when he catches anything)
and by the time I got back there he had laid it on the rug in front of where
I put the kettle on and am sure to step on it..he always does that.
He was staring at it, and KFC was too.  It was clear to me that it was not
dead.  Reason?  It was breathing.  It just lay there on its side with two
interested cats within inches.  I thought it might have fainted.  Kitty
picked it up and took it over to the hearthrug, her favourite place for
eating doves.   She is far too frail to kill a rat now and when she realised
it was alive, she left it.
Rattie took her chance.  I know it was a her as she had a suspiciously
swollen belly.  She ran under the table behind Boyfie's bed.
I got under the table, moved his bed and Rattie came out.  Did Boyfie spring
on the rat again?  No.  He just watched as it limped across the kitchen and
disappeared behind my washing machine.

There are two scenerios here, and neither are good.  1. A rat will die back
there and will stink my kitchen out for a while. 2. A rat will give birth to
up to ten behind my washing machine.

Thanks, Boyfie!

Purrs that there's a third option, a rat will make a break for it and this
time Boyfie will catch it again.

I am leaving the back door open overnight in the hope she will go outside,
there is no movement on this as yet.
Boyfie has yet to learn the killing bite for a biggish rat.  He was too
ambitious on this one.
No sound yet from behind the washing machine.   I can't decide if that's
good or bad.

Yikes - what a dilemma.  I hope that the rat makes a break for it and gets
out from behind there!

No sound from behind the w/m yet, maybe it got out when I left the door open
when I went food shopping.  Let's hope so.  The alternative doesn't bear
thinking about.
I'm going to leave the back door open overnight in case it's still cowering
there to give it yet another chance to escape.
There are rats..and rats.  This one was too big for Boyfie.  I don't know
what he was thinking of!

Sending lots and lots of rat go away purrs.

I wouldn't wish washing machine wiring eating rats on anyone.

Purrs that it's option 3:  Rat escapes (pre-birthing) without being
noticed by BF and KFC!

Maybe kili's husband would want the babies... seems like he's take up
raising rats (or is it mice?)  No idea why.

No noises from behind the washing machine last night, today, or up to now
this evening.
Let's hope Ms Rat managed to run the gauntlet and get outside through the
door I left open overnight.  If not, there will be a dreadful smell in about
a week and I will have to get a plumber in to disconnect the machine and
move it.
<sigh>  Cats!
I now know the true meaning of the phrase  "I bit off more than I could
chew" and so does Boyfie.  KFC has always known her limitations rat-wise.
I suspect he only got a glimpse of it before he grabbed it.  Once he'd
brought it up to the house and seen the full size of it, he was "me?  kill
that?  Get real.."
Kitty had no sympathy.  He had totally ignored her previous advice "do NOT
try to catch large ratties wiv big brown teef."
It was slightly funny really, in a way.  There was I plus 2 cats actually
watching a pregnant rat wandering around the kitchen and none of us did
anything about it!   We were galvanised into inactivity as it were..

I think I posted before about the Squirrel (Tree Rat) getting into the house
and neither cat (Smokey, Cali) wanting anything to do with it. I was the one
who got scratched up getting it back outside.

I only get time to do house cleaning on a Saturday.  I work Monday-Friday
and go out visiting on Sundays.

So there I am this morning, merrily cleaning away in the kitchen.  I have a
dining table in there and I keep a tablecloth on it permanently that almost
touches the floor.  This is for Boyfie's benefit.  He has his bed under
there.  If visitors come and he happens to be in his bed at the time he
stays under there, knowing that no-one can see him. It makes him feel safe.
Anyway, I lifted the tablecloth to clean and sweep under the table moved the
cat bed AND...there was a rat that had obviously been dead for a number of
days.
Is this the end of Ms Rat?  Or, horror of horrors, doesn't bear thinking
about, did Boyfie catch another one when I was out at work and Ms Rat is not
yet accounted for?

I have a dead rat in my kitchen and you are picking on my grammar?

Pfft.

Better a dead one than a live one - ok, I know you haven't actually
*proven* that the dead one is the same rat as the original one, but if I
were you, I think I'd feel a lot happier assuming it was - until or unless
rat #1 shows up again, of course.

Awww, C'mon, it's just meant to inject a little humor... It *could* be part
of a movie plot, after all.

Would you rather the rat were aLIVE???

'Sides: are you sure it isn't a little mousie?  :-)

It creeps me out just to think of it.  But if you leave the door open for
the cats, it is bound to happen .

When I was 15 years old, two of my Aunts took me with them to spend a week
in a mountain cabin.  The bed we used had storage drawers under it.  In
the morning we found "deposits" throughout the bed.  Whatever rodent it
was had been sleeping with us.  EEK!!  MLB

Yikes.  That might be about my limit.

But leaving the doors open for the cats wasn't what got us in trouble.  I'm
sure our rat/mouse problem was the result of boarding the cats and dogs for
a couple of weeks and leaving the house empty.  The rodents from the field
across the street took the opportunity to move into the garage.

I've got two male pet rats, and trust me, they stink.  It's the hubby's
