We are in Buffalo, Wyoming, after two days on the road.
We crossed the top of Idaho and the western part of Montana yesterday. The
mountain passes had some snow, but the plows had them cleared enough so that
we did not have any trouble getting through.
Cinder yowled for the first three hours. I had no idea a cat could make so
many vowel sounds and squawk like a startled chicken for emphasis. Rosie
was her usual stoic self. We have them in separate hard sided crates with
room for a small litter box in the back and to stretch out in the front.
After 7 hours we were happy to pull into a motel in Bozeman, let the cats
out of their crates to explore the room, where we left them to go to get
something to eat. When we returned, Cinder was walking around, but Rosie
was nowhere in sight.
However, there was a suspicious cat-size lump snoring under the bedspread.
Rosie found another excellent hiding spot.
Cinder, who hassled us during the drive, was an absolute angel in the motel
room, snuggling with us most of the night. Rosie, however, had a blast
scampering around and playing and waking us up. (yawn)
This morning we dragged ourselves out bed and loaded the car and set out.
We had intended to go as far as just past Casper, Wyoming, but got tired
after 5 hours. The first part was on dry pavement, but then we were on
snow-packed roads with additional wind blowing snow for nearly white-out
conditions part of the way.
Cinder started out yowling again, but settled down much sooner. The cats
seem to enjoy exploring the new places. Fortunately, the motel beds so far
have been on pedestals, so we don't have to worry about hauling a cat out
from under the bed.
Right now, Rosie is snoring on the pillow under the bedspread. Cinder is
under the edge where it hangs over the side of the bed.
We'll see how it goes the rest of the night and tomorrow.

The Holiday Inn (I think we stayed there) in Bozeman was excellent and
the staff loved pampering our cats. I understand about them singing
the Immigrant Song on the drive. It was Berfert's favorite song, and
he could sing it for as long as 8 hours at a time. On the second or
third day, he would settle down to a morose cross between a yowl and a
murp every five to ten minutes or so. He was not a good traveler.
Good luck on the rest of the trip. I'm glad that Rosie has found such
excellent hiding spaces.

Good luck with the rest of your trip. I admire you for doing the trip with
your kitties. I think I would be so stressed out that I couldn't manage
it - then again, Otis is such an escape artist that you could fairly well
predict disaster trying to travel with him ;-)

The cats travel in large, hard-sided crates and are secured in the crates
at all times in the car except if I have to put something in or take
something out of the crate. Then, the car doors and windows are shut.
In the motel room, they are in the crates during loading and unloading of
stuff.
We have taught them, even at home, not to dash out of an open door. In
fact, before we let them out at home, Rosie would sit on request and Cinder
would stand there until we said "OK." We did not know how important it
would be later for traveling. It just seemed like a good idea at the time.
Today was another long day, and they slept most of the way. Cinder only
fussed for a few minutes. We are so lucky that they are so adaptable,
considering our current lifestyle.
