Sam - 28 Feb 2007 05:38 GMT
Our elder statesman (17YO) began his journey to the Rainbow Bridge today.

He had not been eating well for some time.  Three weeks ago, the vet
thought he found a mass and did a needle biopsy on it.  The report came
back all clear, but he still wasn't eating normally and was losing
weight.  The vet had us try appetite stimulants which seemed to work.
At least he was eating better.  He was scheduled for an ultrasound today
to see if they could find anything wrong inside without being invasive.

During the ultrasound, he was so nervous and jumpy that the radiologist
asked for Smokey to have a very light anesthetic to settle him down long
enough for his ultrasound to be completed.  That was done.  During the
ultrasound, they found 4 different cancerous masses inside.  While they
were bringing him out of anesthesia he just stopped breathing.  The vet
intubated him and tried to revive him without success.

We had known for some time that Smokey was slowing down and withdrawing
from us so we think he knew it was time.  At least passing as he did, he
wasn't in too much pain at the end.

I'll post some memories of Smokey in the next few days.

Always remember We will be there even if you can't see us.
We are always Watching and Waiting. That cool puff of air you
feel across your cheek, that fleeting touch, the feeling you have
that I was walking across your bed, that moment you swear you can
hear us, that flicker of movement out of the corner of your eye.
Is just our way of saying I love you and I am with you always even
in the darkest time We Will Always Be There. Till our paws touch again
always know we love you and cherished our special time together

Ah geez.....

And I know what it's like to be in a vet office an suddenly have one
of your patients suddenly stop breathing.  It's not fun.  You do
everything you can, everything you know and sometimes it's not enough.

I'm so sorry for your loss.  purrs and hugs for you and Mistletoe.

I'm so sorry, Sam.  Given what they found with the ultrasound, it was
probably the gentlest way for him to start his journey over the
Rainbow Bridge.  Still, what a sad blow for you, and for Mistletoe.
This way, Smokey won't have increased pain and unwelness in his
future, and has probably found a nice sunny spot on a couch in the
afterlife to await your coming in comfort. Still, it's awfully sad
coming out of any vet's office with an empty cat carrier!

<tears, indeed>

Now he is either going to the Bridge as we call it or off on an
adventure we can't even imagaine. In any case, he has a spring in his
step that he hasn't had for years, a twinkle in his eyes, and HIS only
sadness is missing his friends, who will be with him, from his POV, in
almost no time. For your and his other friends, the wait will be
longer but you have the memories.

Oh, I am so terribly sorry to hear this. I think it may have been just
as well that he went to the Bridge now; as his quality of life may have
deteriorated rather quickly. But I feel bad that he went this way, as
I'm sure you weren't ready to give him up yet :-(

But at least he had a good long life; many kitties don't ever get to be
senior citizens; so that is something to be thankful for.

Purrs, prayers, and tears, all in abundance...he must have been a handsome
and dignified fellow to have been honored with the title of Elder Statesman.
When he walked over the Bridge he must have done it with his head held high,
for his dignity and knowing you loved enough to let him go with as little
pain as is within the human capacity. But someday he'll come running to greet
you with a lot of love and joy and thanks, and show you a heaven better for a
statesman's work.

Blessed be,
Baha

Sam and Ramona, I am just getting caught up with the Group after a
month of intense work.  I am so very sorry to learn of Smokey's
journey to the Bridge.  It sounds as if he didn't suffer but I know
that doesn't make the loss any easier.  Hobbes, Lacey, Sam and
Barnabus are all sending heartfelt purrs and gentle headbutts.  Sam
would like to send Mistletoe a shy nose touch.  He's just learned that
she thought he was cute after I posted his post-surgery pictures.
He's never had a girl cat think he was cute before and he's not quite
sure how to react but thinks a nose touch is appropriate.  She should
be pleased, he usually just jams his nose up the tail of the cats
around here.

Hugs to you both and I've added a candle to help guide Smokey on his
journey.
