Losing a daughter...gaining a cat?

My SIL interviewed for a position in Budapest in December - he got the
job.  He's now in Glasgow, Scotland, for eight weeks' training.  (His
adventures with understanding the Scottish accent are hilarious!) They
will move to Budapest probably some time in April.  Both have a
Hungarian background - his parents emigrated to Florida where Steve
was born and he speaks fluent Hungarian.  Stephanie's paternal
grandparents also emigrated from Hungary to the US where her father
was born but he used very little of the Hungarian language so she
didn't pick up much but probably enough to catch on when she moves.

Meanwhile, she's busy with a long to-do list, sorting and packing
whatever they can take and all the myriad details of quitting one
place and starting over in a new one.  I sort of feel like I've "lost"
a daughter.  We only got together maybe once a year but at least I
knew she was on the same planet...er, continent.   Now...???

Anyway, one sad part is that they can't take their five kitties along.
She's trying to find new homes for them, no luck so far.  She doesn't
like the idea of putting them in a shelter so we're hoping for a
better solution.  I've offered to take on a couple, can't possibly
take all five though I'd love to.  Too, all depends on how Hobo would
react.  Stephanie hasn't yet agreed and we'd have to figure a way to
get them here -- but I may yet end up with a larger cat family!  Wish
us luck.

Lots of luck for all the kitties to find good homes.

Um, "Son-in-Law"?

I was confused at first, too. I read it as sister-in-law.

Is there any way at all they can take the kitties, or at least some of
them? I don't think Hungary has a quarantine.

So far as I know, Hungary has no quarantine.  As I understand it,
it's more of a choice.  They are moving from a 2500 sq ft house to a
500 sq ft apartment and don't feel they can fit in five cats.  The
landlord will allow one.  Steve wants to bring the oldest, Hoover, so
maybe they can keep him, at least.  Stephanie wants *all* of them but
it seems to be out of the question - it's breaking her heart.

Oh that would be a big change on top of a really long, stressful trip. I
hope it all works out. I'm sure she is having a hard time with it.

Jeanne,

I'm sure the logistics are nightmarish, but I think the cats would
adjust to a small space. We have lived in tiny places in the past with
multiple cats. They make such good use of space -- especially up and
down! If they got a couple of cat trees and maybe a shelf or two cleared
for them, I'm sure they would be fine.

I hope they find a way to make things work for everyone,

Rhonda

Well, yes, I guess it does.  Thinking son-in-law and writing
sister-in-law.    Will spell things out in the future.

Wow. Big changes. I bet you and Hobo could manage (since I'm certain they
would help with bills). With internet they won't seem quite so far away.
Definitely learn to use chat! It really makes you feel like you are in the
same room a lot of times.
