Quinn is missing

Norm - 24 Feb 2007 15:33 GMT This is incomprehensible. I can't find Quinn anywhere. Early this morning, at 1 AM, with the catdoor still blocked and no way out of the house, Quinn didn't show for midnight snack. It's possible, indeed the only explanation, is that he somehow slipped out when I opened the backdoor for a second to see if the feral black cat had visited for his kibble, I can't believe that Quinn got out in that one second without being seen, but I've looked in every conceivable place inside (and all inconceivable places too). If he were outside (and the catdoor has been closed at night ever since Willie disappeared in PA) Quinn never not returned for breakfast, he's never not returned on time at all. This is his former feral haunt before I rescued him 3 years ago, so I've looked everywhere I ever saw him, and under cars and places up the streets that have cats...nothing. I have no ideas left, and dimiinishing hopes. At this point it's so unlike him, I don't know what I'm more afraid of, not finding him or how I will find him. Norm

At > this point it's so unlike him, I don't know what I'm more afraid of, not > finding him or how I will find him. Norm I'm assuming that he is neutered and is not after some distant girlfriend. Since he is in his former territory, he probably is not lost and knows how to get home.
Maybe he is still inside the house and hiding for some reason. Are you putting out food inside the house? Are there deposits in the litter box? I suppose if he is stuck somewhere, such as in a chimney or duct, that he will complain about it and you will hear him.
He could be shut in a neighbor's garage or shed. Someone may have seen him and taken him in. There is a good chance you can find him if you check around.
We are sending "get your fuzzy b*tt home" purrs for Quinn to make an appearance soon.

If he did get out, it's possible someone thought they were rescuing him and are keeping him shut in. You might put up posters about him.

What is the best or worst that could have happened to him in your part of the world? Here in UK, foxes will sometimes take cats, but road accidents more. I hope you find him soon. If it was Boyfie missing I would be climbing the walls. I will concentrate my best thoughts. Get home Quinn, get home Quinn, ad finitum.

Norm Drop off fliers at the neighbors homes.
Rhonda - 24 Feb 2007 19:22 GMT The only cat we ever lost inside the house -- had climbed up between the fireplace insert and the chimney, then jumped down below the insert with no way back up. Basically, she was trapped in the chimney and not making a peep.
If you think he's outside, go to every neighbor and ask them to open all out-buildings and garages and check for him. He must be trapped somewhere.

Rhonda - 24 Feb 2007 23:59 GMT Yes, but wow, what a close call. She apparently climbed in while my sig. other had it open, loading wood. She might have been standing on top of the insert as it got hotter. She was missing from afternoon on. That night, after we searched everything multiple times, he thought of the fireplace. We went outside and opened that little metal door at the bottom of the chimney and could see glowing eyes in the darkness. OMG!
It didn't stop there. She wouldn't come out and that little trap door isn't much wider than an arm. She is jet black and we couldn't even see her without a flashlight. She was too frightened to come near us. We tried all night, I sat out there in the frost on a blanket. Finally we set a live trap and went inside. In the morning I went out to find the trap sprung and caught on the chimney door! Ugh. She was gone.
It took another day to find her outside and figure out a way to catch her (she was formerly feral.) She smelled like oil -- I think she hid under the oil tank.
Her name is Licorice, but we thought about changing it to Ashley.
She definitely gave us a heart attack.
Thanks for asking!

You see these stories on Animal Planet, where people have to come to the house and tear apart the chimney, or the wall, or whatever, to rescue the cat from the otherwise impossible-to-reach place. I'm glad you didn't have to do that!
> Her name is Licorice, but we thought about changing it to Ashley. Well, my cat Licky says that Licorice is a fine name, thank you! (That's what "Licky" is short for.)
Joyce
Rhonda - 25 Feb 2007 07:53 GMT You have a Licorice too? That's the first I've heard of another one. Is she black, or is she the red variety? ;)
Twizzler would have been a fun name, too. Her sister's name is Snickers.

Is she black, or is she the red variety? ;) Actually, she's a he. :) And he's really a tuxedo, but he's mostly black, so to me, he looks like a black cat. His chin is white, and he has a neat little inverted triangle of white on his chest, very dapper. Also, white whiskers, which are quite dramatic against his black face. He is a most handsome feline.
It took me weeks and weeks to come up with a name for him. At first, I tried going the "classy silver-screen movie star" route, coming up with names like "Astaire" and "Cooper". They just didn't quite make it. When a friend of mine found out that, after having him 3 months, I still hadn't named him, she said, "Oh, *will you please* name that poor cat!" She then took it on as a personal mission to give him a name. She's the one who came up with Licorice.
I call him Licky mostly as a "for-short" nickname, but also because he'll sometimes lick my hand if he's feeling affectionate. But I think the ability to generate good nicknames is an important part of a name choice. If you can't get a decent nickname out of a name, then forget it. That's why I nixed "Astaire" and "Cooper". What on earth are the nicknames for those??
> Twizzler would have been a fun name, too. Her sister's name is > Snickers. Those are adorable names. It would be cute to name an orange cat Licorice, although it might be harder to figure out the joke. :)

Norm We're all pulling for him to come home soon. In his old fereal-days haunts, he probably won't have panicked and gotten lost. On the other paw, he probably will feel confident enough to stay out for awhile, even though not hurt or lost. Good luck.

Norm Did you remember to visit or notify the Humane Society and rescue groups in your area? Also, if there are any Vets in your area, it might be a good idea to ask them to be on the lookout. Can your cat get into your attic or basement? Are there any vents that could be easily opened?
The big ginger tom,Ginger, we had when I was a teenager was gone for three weeks but eventually decided home was best.

Norm - 25 Feb 2007 11:17 GMT Many thanks for all the good wihes, at 2 this morning I was having soup (since I couldn't sliip), and Quinn pops through the catdoor and, ignoring me and my relief, heads for the kitchen, I oakoed ghim as he ate and he was not hurting anywhere, TG. He did spend the rest of the night in bed with me (doesn't normally)
What had me most scred is that Quinn never missed a meal before, and that he's been staying real close to hoime since Willie's diappearance. I still can't figure how he cpi;d get c;losed in somewhere at the wee hours of yesterday morning, and stay closed in until gettiong free at 2 AM, O had wa;led by all the garages around, calling him (and I woulda heard his resp;one). A nystery forever, one I can live with as long as he us her with me. Again, thanks for all the wihes, and I am so glad to report the great ness. Norm

Norm - 25 Feb 2007 11:31 GMT I shoulda changed the subject line before, I wanted to add anyway that Quinn is very shy of people, I doubt he'd let even Katie approach him off the property. so it'd be very unlikely for someone to even pet him, much less have brought him inside anything.
