polonca12000 - 20 Feb 2007 21:35 GMT > I was hoping for an update. Again, others need purrs more, but here is the update. He doesn't eat on his own, I have to force-feed him and he hates it. He started peeing on the floor yesterday as soon as he saw I was going to force-feed him, so I took him to the vet this AM instead of PM as we were scheduled. This was good as I talked to the senior vet who operated on him. He said that part of the grass is still in him (the incision is in the middle of the abdomen, not in his lower abdomen as I thought), they massaged the rest of the cat-grass and pushed it lower and hoped he would pass it, but he hasn't. So he said to continue force-feeding him even if he pees, to give him a laxative 2x a day and to bring him back on Thursday. The vet also gave him an enema, but it hasn't worked yet. Any spare purrs would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Polonca and Soncek

Thanks in advance, > Polonca and Soncek Today Soncek passed a bit of grass (I don't know if all of it, but we will see the senior vet again tomorrow and he'll know) and he ate a little bit of dry food by himself!!! I still force-feed him, and give him medicine, but things are looking up! And he doesn't pee on the floor anymore even if I force-feed him. He doesn't like it, but who can blame him? The last time he peed on the floor was when I put him in the carrier to take him to the vet yesterday. The vet also mentioned that when Soncek recovers he will have to go on a kidney diet, he said a lot of older cats have problems with kidneys. Soncek said: "What older cats? I'm in my purrr-ime!" Soncek doesn't have problems with kidneys yet, but they aren't working as well as they did when he was younger. Thank you all for your purrs and messages of support, they mean so much to Soncek and me. We are purring and sending best wishes for everyone who needs them, Polonca and Soncek

And he doesn't pee on the floor > anymore even if I force-feed him. //// Do you remember Flo, my foster cat that went to live with Andrea Fuller? She had similar abdominal surgery to Soncek and I had to force feed her for a few days as she refused to eat and felt so rotten. When you go to the vet tomorrow, ask him for some Hills AD diet in a can. It's designed for recuperating cats and is very gooshy - you can water it down and warm it up, and then syringe feed it. That's what triggered her appetite after 4 days - because she had something warm in her tummy and it made her feel better she then started lapping it from the dish on her own.
Purrs and more purrs for Sonceks continued recovery.

He gave me 2 ad hills cans and I'm almost finished syringe feeding him. Now he has to go on kidney diet k/d, hopefully he will eat it. But the best news of all is that the senior vet palpated Soncek's tummy today and said that there is no grass left there!!! Soncek has to take antibiotics for a while longer and there's a wound on his paw (during the operation they put something - I don't know what it is called - in his vein so they can administer medicine, and they kept it in over the weekend just to be sure). Soncek must have bitten it so much (even though it was covered with a bandage) that there's a wound and even though they covered it again, he bites at it. But I'm so relieved he is going to be ok! It is invaluable for giving pills to reluctant cats such as Soncek. Here in the UK they are readily available from vets and good pet shops. The pill is held in the end of the piller, and if you can get it between the tightly clenched teeth and towards the back of the tongue, a quick push of the plunger sends the pill straight down beyond the point where it can be spat out again. Some of them allow you to put water in with the pill. You can usually hold the cat between the knees, facing outwards, and use one hand to hold his head/upper jaw and gently raise it backwards until he has to relax his clenched jaws a bit - with the piller ready next to the side of the mouth, you can quickly pop it in and presto! If you can't get one, please tell me as I am very willing to send you one over if it would help, though I don't know if it would get to you before the end of his course of pills. Let me know, as it's no trouble and I'd be very pleased to help!

I ended up just shoving the pill down Rusty's throat after I brushed his teeth. He likes the taste of the toothpaste and the thimble like toothbrush protected my finger. But he was catching on about the pill after tooth brushing.

A tip I picked up from another list is to mix the medicine with a little maple syrup - it helps with the bitterness. If you don't have any of that, molasses and or dark corn syrup may do the trick.
Good luck! Mishi PS: I sympathize with poor Soncek. I have 1 med that is soooo bitter I feel like foaming at the mouth! (Chocolate helps me! <G>)

The thyroid med Frank and Nikki got was probably fairly bland, so the syringe thing worked well with them. Though they did manage to spit some of it out; Nikki by just closing her mouth and letting the liquid ooze out between her teeth, and Frank by shaking his head violently when I let go of him, and the meds would splatter all around. He refused point blank to eat it: the kidney diet, not the Aussie vet ;-)
I was having to syringe feed him with it and after a couple of weeks, he was not a happy cat. So we have a compromise. Normal 'senior' food. In this case, my three all eat 'wet' Felix senior food from pouches and senior dry food, with access to water at all times. Francis has thrived. Senior food is lower in protein than 'standard' cat food, so it is more gentle on the kidneys. Obviously it's not as low in protein than the specialist kidney diet, but if it's a case of not eating at all... Francis is now hale & hearty and lives life to the full, so the senior diet isn't doing him any harm it would seem. Hope the same happens for Soncek

Finally last year at age 12, he was put on a prescription mature cat formula and so far so good. If Soncek likes senior food, maybe you should ask your vet about mixing it with k/d.
