Baggy was trying to wee last night and couldn't, this morning he still
hadn't used his box and was very distressed. I took him straight to the vet
where he still is, they're going to give him an anaesthetic and catheterise
him. I've got to ring them this afternoon to see how he is and when I can
collect him.

purrs for all!

Sounds like feline urinary syndrome - our Ishmael had that.  The good
news is that it's almost always treatable.  Ishmael had an episode of
cystitis a few weeks later, and needed to be on special food for a long
time, but he was a healthy happy cat who lived to a reasonable age.

It must be one of the most rewarding things for a vet to deal with; the
animal would certainly die without treatment and you really can fix it
properly.

One odd thing that happened to Ishmael you might want to know about;
the anti-struvite/low-magnesium food he was on had a lot of egg in
it.  His fur went grey.  From reading books on human nutrition, I
knew that one of the few causes of that is biotin deficiency, which
is EXTREMELY hard to get - the usual cause is eating raw egg, which
binds irreversibly to biotin.  (Nearly all the books report the same
case, a middle-aged alcoholic whose diet was exclusively red wine
and raw eggs).  We got some biotin supplement (not at all easy to
come by) and after a few stiff doses his fur went black again.  We
kept him on the Hills low-Mg food for a few years until they changed
the formulation and he'd rather have starved than eat it, so went
back to a normal diet, though we made sure he didn't get tuna - no
more urinary problems.

That sounds like something treatable but serious. The vets should be
able to help him out. Our purrs are with him.

Baggy's home now, he's had his bladder drained and flushed and been given an
antibiotic injection. He's got to go back in the morning but the vet said
it's best if he can spend the night in his own home, which makes sense.

He's had something to eat and drink now and is purring, if it wasn't for the
two shaved patches on his front legs you wouldn't know anything had been
wrong.

Thanks again everyone for the purrs, they worked.

The pain could be from the catheterization. When Rusty came home
from spending a weekend at the emergency vet with urinary blockage, he
was given something to relax his urinary tract.
Rusty sends sympathetic purrs to Baggy.

That may not be too much to worry about, like Winnie says, he is probably
sore from having a catheter in. (I remember that myself ;-()  and it takes a
day or two for the discomfort to wear off. Let's hope they get to know what
caused it very soon.
My own vet says they always do much better at home and will discharge them
overnight if possible to come back the next morning for more tests to get to
the bottom of it (if you will excuse the unintentional pun..)

More painfree weeing purrs for poor Bagheera, the lovely black panther.

I remember the vet told me that Rusty pulled the
catheter out.  When I asked Rusty about it, he did't want to be
reminded of that time. He knows what Baggy went through.  But do watch
Baggy closely for any reblockage. Rusty had a few recurrences even
with the prescription
diet. Also make sure he drinks enough water.

When Robbie had this problem, as well as antibiotics, he was given pain
relief and anti-inflamatory to try and calm his bladder down. Same with
Tiger when he had cystitis. Purrs for a rapid recovery for your dear

Adrian, what was wrong with him, was it crystals or stones that clogged
him? Does he have a bladder infection too?

Home already! That's sorta weird IMO... I've never had vet let a cat go home
the same day after having been catheterized and having his bladder
drained...It's always a 2+day stay before tube removal and a day of watching
to see if he urinates on his own without distress (just to make sure all the
crystals are flushed) then the kitty is sent home with meds and special
foods... Glad Baggy's on the mend though...Pets and scrinches :-) Liz

He's going back first thing, it's still hurting him to urinate but I think

Quite often my vet will send hospitalised patients over night if it's
not life threatening, because he feels that animals are happier and less
stressed at home. He also believes that sensible owners know their pets
behaviour better than he does. He is obviously on 24 hour call when he
has a hospitalised case, but vets surgeries are often not manned 24/7 so
patients get better care out of hours from mom and/or dad at home.

Glad he's doing better - he sure must *feel* a lot better!

But do they know what caused the blockage? Sounds like they're thinking
some kind of infection. No chance of crystals?

Purrs for him to stay healthy!

If he's getting blocked again, I wonder if he has stones (very large
crystals.) Those should have shown up on the x-ray though.

Our cat had crystals, which has to be modified with diet. His were
struvite crystals so we are able to use regular urinary diet food that
changes the urine PH and helps guard against struvite formation.

He also had a bladder infection, which is fairly rare in male cats. One
theory for him is that the crystals irritated the bladder enough to
cause an infection, but the vet said it could have been caused by the
stress of moving homes (and possibly holding his urine.)

We were lucky -- no stones and no blockages.

Baggy's been back to the vet this morning and his bladder is empty. It looks
like it was caused by an infection, the vet says that unless it recurs there
should be no need to change his diet.

He's on a course of antibiotics and is going back to the vet tomorrow for
another checkup. Also I'll probably get the bill tomorrow, I know that won't
be cheap, not that I begrudge the cats anything.

I'm so glad it looks like Baggy can empty his bladder now.  Let me try and
guess what the bill might be, judging on my own UK vet prices, in GB pounds.
First consultation 15.  Anaesthetic 20-40,  catheter kit 10, procedure to
flush bladder (including anaesthetist and nurse) at least 80.  Follow up
consultation 8, antibiotics up to 10. (extra up to 100 if they sense you are
emotionally attached to your pet)
Let me know if I am anywhere close.

Adrian,
Purrs go out to Baggy from my Gizmo - he is currently at the vets for
the same thing. He has been at the vet since early yesterday
afternoon, and they will probably keep him for at least another day or
2. I checked on him today and he was doing better, but still had the
catheter in - the vet tech said they will pull it tomorrow to see how
he is doing. This also was caused by an infection. :( The bill for
this will be about 441.00 US, give or take a few $$. I am glad I have
credit cards!

that the vet says "it looks like" an infection. He or she should be able
to tell that immediately with a urine sample (and also see crystals.)
Our vet got a sample, then we had a wait about 15 minutes while she
checked under the scope. The antibiotics did take care of the infection
but we also knew we had a longer-term issue with crystals. Our cat got
another infection a year later and we had to see a new vet. The same
thing though -- they got the sample and we waited. This time, no
crystals (diet was working!) but he had a bacterial infection again.

If your vet didn't do a urinalysis, you may want to ask for one. You
won't know about the infection now because he's already on antibiotics,
but the vet should be able to spot crystals.

Hope this is a one-time thing for Baggy!

Good luck,

Rhonda

Baggy has been back for his final check-up and been given a clean bill of
health. He'll be on antibiotics for the next five days which thankfully he's
taking with his food without protest.

Tweed was pretty accurate in her guess of the final bill, £92.34 plus £15.41
for Frontline, ($180.30 + $30.09 USD) which I think is quite reasonable.

When we came home I dug a hole in the garden to plant some rhubarb, Baggy
assumed I dug it for him and used it. ;o)

Adrian, that *is* very reasonable, considering the care that he got.
Sounds like Baggie had a much better day, and even got to garden (is
that the word you all use for planting things? USians call a "garden"
a "yard", a "garden" to us is a plot of vegetables I get confused
about that). That's Bootsie's favorite activity in the whole world.

Your vet sounds good.  I think Vino would have recovered from his
blockage way faster if he had been able to come home.  As it was, he was
at the vet's for 5 days and was super stressed the whole time.  I still
feel so bad about it.
I'm very glad to hear that things are progressing well for Baggy, all
things considered.

Lots of purrs on the way.  I'll have to let Gilbert know so he can purr too.

Aaargh, I know how you feel since I went through this with Vino in May.
Poor Baggy.  I hope it's easily resolved.  You did seem to catch it
earlier than I did.  Many purrs enroute.

My father had this problem on a few occasions.  About 10 years before
his death, his bladder had to be removed due to cancer.  The doctors
converted a section of his large intestine into a substitute bladder,
so that he didn't have to wear a drain bag.  The new reservoir was
drained by inserting a rubber catheter into a stoma that resembled a
second navel.  Since the intestine is made of mucus-forming tissue,
the reservoir continued to form mucus, and, on a couple of occasions,
the passage got blocked up and he had to go to the hospital to be
drained.  On one such occasion, they ended up removing over 1 1/2
liters of urine.
