It's 11 at night here. There's a raging thunderstorm outside. It's Nathan's
birthday - the front door bell went as the parents of one of Nathan's mates
turned up to collect her son. It is *evil* out there. Cue one very wet, very
cold, very bewildered dog on my doorstep! The dog has a name tag on - with a
phone number. The area code is *Plymouth* - a couple of hundred miles from
here! I currently have one drying, warming, silent, traumatised old lady dog
lying on the floor of my office.
Purrs please??? *please*

Oh, the poor thing! I hope someone was visiting close by and she ran
off--not walked all that way from Plymouth!
Lots of purrs from our Master and Tail Wags from the furry servant of
the Master and prayers from Master's Meowmie.

Thanks Margaret - the poor thing is on the floor, exhausted, hardly moving, but
I've got her to take a bit of meat-based cat food - I don't have any dog food
in the house!
I've rung the number on the ID tag - answerphone... I've rung the police in
case someone is in the area on holiday and has reported losing thir dog - the
police round here leave an answerphone on.... I've rung the dog warden - he
doesn't work at night....
Looks like I've got an overnight visitor.

Catfood has too much meat for dogs, even tho they usually do like it.
You may want to boil some potaotes and/or rice and mash it together with
the catfood. Just to be on the safe side, don't use any cereals or
catfood containing fish as some doggies can be allergic. Potato, rice
and a meaty catfood should be OK. If you have any to spare, you could
add a little cottage cheese or even plain yoghurt. (did I ever tell ya I
grew up with dogs, Laku's our first kitty??)

Answerphones, answerphones...

The kitties must be intrigued by the smell of wet dog in the house.

Purrs for the poor girl. Perhaps her people are travelling or visiting in
the area, and if you notify the usual - local shelters, etc - they'll be
doing the same and she can get back with them.

It's a long way for a dog to blow in!
Loads of calming purrs for the poor old lady, I hope you find her owner
tomorrow.
*idea* The fact that she seemed to 'blow in' from Plymouth might be enough
of a story to get her on the local radio tomorrow. Give them a ring and ask
if they can help with publicity. :)

That is a very good idea. Plymouth is a long way from Norfolk and it might just
do the trick.
Poor dog is crashed out still.
Thanks for the calming purrs :-)

Lost d*g purrs on the way! Smart d*g to know who the most kindhearted
hoomin in the area is :) Hope you can get in touch with her slaves soon as
a familiar face (or smell maybe) would probably be the most soothing thing

Purrs coming that you can find the old lady's family and reunite them.
I wonder if they were traveling and she got separated. Or they could
have moved and left on an old tag, though I hope not since that will
make it harder to track them down.

Oh, poor d*ggie! Many purrs coming over for her, though Frank wants it
noted that he objects to a smelly d*g invading his ladycat's house and
privacy in this way. So Frank is purring hard for the d*g to be returned

Excellent news!
Just reunited d*g with owner :-)
It's some people staying nearby on a holiday. Apparently the dog got spooked by
the weather last night. The owners were out last night looking for their dog,
but didn't think the dog would get so far away from where they were staying. A
very happy reunion involving lots of full-body tail-wagging occurred :-)
Thanks for the purrs!

That's the number I put on my cats' tags - that's the only one I know won't
change now that you can "port" your cell phone number. Plus, as you
alluded, that's usually the phone that will always be with you.

It couldn't hurt. My parents took their dog with them to visit
relatives several hundred miles from their home. The dog got out, and
got lost. They had their home number on the tag. The people who
rescued the dog called my parents' home. Fortunately, my brother-in-law
was house-sitting for them, so he took the call and relayed the message
to them, and they were reunited with their dog.

Strange you should say that, I was thinking the same thing before I read
this thread. If your animal is missing chances are you'll be out looking
so your home number won't help.

Nearby was about half-a-mile away. The family are due to travel back to
Plymouth today. Seems this morning they rang a family member down there to go
to the house to check if there was anything on the answerphone... there was, my
message! So they rang us and came over. It's lovely, as they said today would
have been *horrible* if they'd had to travel without the dog. Seems that back
at home, if there's a thunderstorm, the dog hides under something, as she is
terrified. Last night, she bolted to a door as it was being opened. Probably
the change of location just tipped her over onto a total panic. Still - all's
well that ends well :-)

So happy to hear this. About two years ago one of our little poodles got
out and wandered off. I still can not imagine how she managed to find the
front yard much less get any further. She was nearly blind. She managed
to get to the intersection at the end of the street where kind strangers
took her to animal control. And where we found her a few hours later.
Still can't imagine how she did this for the first time in her life at 16
years old. And still very grateful that someone bothered to protect her.
