I was hesitant to ask for purrs for Soncek since so many kitties and
humans seem to need them more at the moment. But Soncek is not well. He
vomited clear fluid on Wednesday so I took him to the vet on Thursday
morning. They did an ultrasound and they took his blood and both were
quite ok. They gave him an antibiotic shot and gave him fluids as he was
very dehydrated. He perked up visibly when they gave him fluids even
though he didn't act sick when he vomited, just a bit tired. In the
evening they told me he has lots of bacteria in his urine and I thought
that was it. I took him home for the night and brought him back this
morning. Since he still wasn't eating and vomited when force-fed they
did an x-ray. They found out that he didn't swallow any metal object.
Then they gave him contrasting fluids in the morning and when they did
another x-ray in the evening the fluids were still in his stomach. They
said it could be a spasm, pancreatitis or tumor, so I'm terribly scared.
Hopefully we will know more tomorrow. They said they may have to open
him up to see what is wrong. They said it would be better if I let him
stay there over night, so I did. They let me pet him in his cage, he
wanted to go out and seemed anything but ill. But we all know that
kitties hide if they aren't feeling well.
Please could you send some purrs for Soncek? Thank you so much for
reading this.

At 10AM today the vets decided to operate Soncek, they said that without
the operation he would die. I was so scared what they would find. But
when they opened him they found that there was some cat-grass stuck in
his stomach and intestines and they managed to get it out. Soncek
*loves* cat-grass and I have given it to him occasionally with no ill
effects, but after the operation I told the vet I will never ever give
it to him again and he agreed. I have to give Soncek antibiotics and
take him back to the vet on Monday for a check-up.
Soncek is back home, he is a bit restless, but he is calming down
already. I cannot tell you how relieved I am. The purrs you all sent

Wow! Cat grass causing a problem it's supposedly meant to prevent?? How
bizarre. Maybe I won't replace Ketzl's, now that it's gone brown and dry. He
never really took to it anyway. Luckily, he doesn't have problems with
hairballs, at least not so far.
Which reminds me: I've decided that the next time I run into someone who's
become a bit on the cranky side, I'm going to ask them, quite seriously, "You
seem a bit uptight; Do you need a little hairball gel?" :-)

I'm so happy for you both! This could almost be chalked down to a
b*st*rd cat trick, except that Soncek was surely not counting on having

I'm so glad Soncek is back and recovering, but I don't understand how grass
could have caused his problem, it is natural for cats to eat grass, mine go
outside and eat it all the time with no problems all their life.
Sometimes I think that people who have indoor cats are driven by the
newsgroup and the media to "do what is best for an indoor cat."
Maybe it's not such a good idea to try and let them be virtual outdoor
cats - they aren't and never will be.

"Kitty grass" isn't the same thing as what grows outside. I give my
indoor cats wheat grass. I don't even know what Smudge munches on out
there. Luckily, nobody has had any problem with either!

Well, I don't know what they sell as kitty grass in Slovenia, but here
in California, it's wheat grass. My kitties have never had any problem
from it.

Do you mean shoots that come from wheat sprouting? That is not grass.
Can't you get grass seed to grow *real proper* grass? Like wot my kitties
eat outside?
I would be scared if my cats ate sprouting wheat. I wouldn't allow them to,
actually, I think it would block them up. The blades are too wide and big.

'Cat grass' is usually wheat or barley shoots. I've never heard of a
problem before. I often buy my cats a little pot of wheat grass to munch
on, especially now during winter, when there's no grass outside. But
from now on, I'll think twice about that.

I hope I translated it correctly, because it's written in German and
French but not in English (or Slovenian). It is a mixture of oats,
barley and millet. Soncek has never had a problem with it until now. But
he *loves* to eat cat-grass so much that if I let him (which I never
did), he would eat the whole thing in one sitting. He also eats it
hastily and that could be part of the problem.

Ohh . I wonder if he ate a big bunch of it and it couldn't be dissolved

I missed this at first...I'm just so glad it was just from a little bit of
salad and that your dear Soncek is on his way to feeling his old self again.
Continuing purring...
Blessed be,

Oh my goodness!! I wouldn't have thought that would happen!!! I'm so
glad he is ok. I sure hope that he recovers just fine. Will continue to
send purrs.

Oh, I'm so relieved too! I just now read this, am behind on messages at
the moment. How strange that cat grass did this to him, I wonder if the
didn't chew the long blades well enough? Vino seems to puke up any
grass he eats almost immediately and I can see that the pieces are quite
short and chewed up.

That must have been the problem. Soncek vomited quite long blades, but
as he never had any problems before and as I didn't know that other
kitties chew it better than him I wasn't worried. Thanks for the
information, Britta.
Best wishes,

Polonca (and Soncek),
Of course we will send purrs for Soncek. You are always there for everyone
else. I can't imagine anyone more deserving.
I hope he will suddenly recover from this mystery illness without need for
surgery and you can consider it a b*st*rd cat trick.
Anyway, we are sending purrs for a rapid and complete recovery, however it
comes about.

I'm so sorry to hear this, Polonca. It must be so lonely without your
lovely boy at home. Many, many purrs on the way that it turns out to be
nothing serious and easily fixable.

No need to be hesitant! Not that there's a contest, but considering
that you're always here or in Catslaves with a kind word or purrs, I
doubt there's anyone here who would think twice before returning the
kindness
Many feel better and heal quickly purrs for Soncek, and the same
good thoughts to you for your worried heart.
The Fairfax Fur Factory is purring as I type. Hope everything
turns out well quickly and painlessly.
