Slight grossness warning (although if you have a cat, this isn't
anything you haven't seen before).

This morning, I heard Smudge in the other room uttering a rather
uncharacteristic cry, which got my attention enough to make me go
check out what was going on. I was afraid she was hurt. Turned out,
she was puking her guts out, which is very unusual. Roxy pukes
about once a week, so that's not a major news item, but actually,
and I'm not sure I've ever seen Smudge throw up before. And it was
a whole lot of stuff, too! It seemed a bit sudden as well, because
she was on one of my kitchen counters when it happened, and most
cats I've seen throw up seem to prefer getting down on the floor.
(But I guess that might not be significant.) Of course, immediately
afterward, she was ravenous. This is always the case for Roxy, who
just has a delicate stomach. Smudge seemed fine afterward, but it
did give me pause.

Please, dear god, don't let Smudge get sick too!!

She probably ate something that fought back. I think the fact that she was
ravenous afterward points to that: she just wanted to fill up again. If she
were sick, maybe she wouldn't have wanted to eat so soon.

Most every cat we've ever had, has had a hair-trigger gag reflex.  Hurcking
up just comes very easily to some of them.  Usually if they are on the
counter, the will try to make it to the floor first, but then again if they
are on the floor, they will try to get onto the bed of furniture first.

But just in case, a few extra purrs for Smudge.

It's true, a lot of cats throw up easily. I just can't remember Smudge
ever doing it before. And this was so... voluminous.

Another thought hit me: sibling jealousy? Smudge thinks you have made
too much of a fuss over Roxy lately?

LOL! I know you're not really joking, since I have been making a fuss
over Roxy and she could be jealous. But if Smudge only knew what Roxy
has been through, she wouldn't be jealous at all!

By the way, when I got home from work tonight, Smudge seemed fine.
She was rolling around all over the place, trotting beside me, and
excited about dinner. So I guess it was just a fluke. Combined with
a stressed-out kitty mom!

Glad to hear Smudge is OK. Continuing to send purrs for Roxy and your nerves.

I had to take Smokey to the Vet Wednesday because his eye was swollen almost
shut and watery. He has conjuctivitis (sp), I have to put drops in his eye
every hour until they are gone. Of course were not there 24/7 so he gets it
every hour when we are there and not sleeping. It looked much better this
morning.

Oh, I feel your pain! Poor Smokey, I hope the drops help and he's feeling
better soon!

Frequently, if a cat upchucks, the kibble will look just as it did
when it came out of the food bag, with no sign of chewing or
digestion.  I usually figure that it means that the cat ate too fast.

On the other hand, if you have a cat that upchucks daily, it may be a
sign of more than just hairballs or eating too fast.  My Katie threw
up daily, sometimes more than once a day.  The vet diagnosed the
problem as hairballs, and sold me a tube of hairball remedy, which
didn't help.  Finally, about six months later, the problem was
diagnosed as widespread cancer.  Unfortunately, by that point, it was
too late to save her life.

That is really sad. :(  I'd be angry about it, too. But at the same
time, there's nothing you can do about it, and not even anger will
bring her back.

It is a cautionary tale, though - sometimes you have to trust your
instincts and get a second opinion. Of course, we're supposed to believe
the experts, so it's easy to conclude that your instinct must be wrong.

Anyway, even if she had been diagnosed right away, it might already
have been too late.

Purrs! That's a sad story.

I sincerely hope not! Caliban hardly ever pukes, either, so I was really
worried the other day when he did. He didn't do it just once, but
several times during a two-hour period. It was early in the morning, so
I decided to work at home that day to keep an eye on him. What really
worried me then was that he showed no interest in his breakfast, which
is unheard of. He had that hangd*g appearance, poor little boy. But he
was fine later on. Hope Smudge is too.

Purrs that it was just a one off and she's fine again now.

Just realized from another post that Smudge is an outdoor/indoor cat.  Its
spring.  Maybe she found some early shoots of grass to chew on.  I know my
cats do this on purpose when there are fresh green things to chew on.
Fortunately they usually manage to throw up while they are out as well.  I
think it was our Maggie that would go out and eat grass and then want to
come inside to do the honors.
