Heart attacks

... when a full set of sharp claws suddenly embed themselves in my back
as I am chopping veggies for dinner - Miranda wanting to supervise me.
She settles down on my shoulder to watch intently while I prepare dinner.

... when I turn from the counter towards the fridge and see 5-6 kilos
(11-13 lbs) of Caliban sailing through the air towards me. He was aiming
for my shoulder, but I turned at the wrong moment, but managed to put up
my arms on time and catch him. Then I tried to swallow my heart.

... when I'm sitting at the computer and suddenly 5-6 kilos of Caliban
lands on my shoulder. He jumps down from the cat tree above my desk. Or
he takes a flying leap from the floor.

... when I am bending over anything for whatever reason - this is always
the cue for Miranda to jump onto my back and then climb up to my shoulder.

I just wish Caliban hadn't decided to mimic her and use me as his
personal climbing furniture. It was enough with Miranda's sharp claws, I
don't need the huge weight of Caliban suddenly landing on me from
various directions. ;)

Yikes - its official.  You are a slave in need of a bullet proof vest (and
lightening fast reflexes)!

Yes, that one almost killed me. I can't help but wonder what goes
through his little fuzzy head when he pulls stunts like that - I think
he believes he's still a little kitten-boy.

I know the feeling. Nina fortunately doesn't do that very often, but
when she was a baby, she would leap up to my back from the floor, and
then use all her claws to make her way up my back to my shoulder. I
think we need a reverse kevlar apron and shoulder pads to  protect us
from these attacks!

I certainly forget that Miss Lily Whiskers is not the baby kitten that
used to be able to sit on my hand. I often refer to her as the baby, or
the kitten, and people look at me blankly when an 18 month old 4.5kg cat
thunders into the room!

I know that one. =o) Possibly because Nina still has the adorable
round kitten face. And I have these indelible memories of her climbing
all over my shoes. Not to mention that when she was new born, she fit
in the palm of my hand, and her tail was a little fuzzy piece of
string. =o) Now she rules my apartment with a benevolent iron paw, and
bullies her poor mother without mercy.

Some advice to take to heart -- take a nap
Tue Feb 13, 2007 9:07am ET

CHICAGO, Feb 12 (Reuters Life!) - Regular naps are good for your heart,
researchers said on Monday.

A six-year study of nearly 24,000 Greek adults found those who regularly took
midday naps lowered their risk of dying from heart disease by more than a
third.

Those who made it a practice of napping at least three times a week for a
minimum of 30 minutes had a 37 percent lower risk of dying from heart disease
compared to non-nappers.

<snip>

[Editor's Addendum: Although inconclusive, evidence points to a strong link
between even longer longevity {sic} and napping with a cat or cats. Something
to do with "transference of nine lives." :-)]

Oh, naps with cats are definitely good for you. :) I try to take as many
naps with the cats as I can. I'm lucky in that I can work from home if I
want to (I also have an office to go to), and when I do, I always take a
nap after lunch. Miranda usually comes and asks to be let under the
blanket, and then curls up in the crook of my arm. Sometimes, Caliban
also wants under the blankie, and it can get a bit crowded, but still
lovely.

Soncek sometimes joins me for a nap and it's wonderful!

Obviously more instances of cats being standoffish!

This is, what Tientje does when I bend over. Unfortunately he doesn't
climb up to my shoulder. Instead he does:

and he stays there until Volker comes to save me:-)

Tientje's claws are very sharp to and I can imagine, how your
shoulders must look - poor Marina.

In her younger days, Mandy was notorious for leaping on people's backs and
either settling there or climbing the rest of the way to their shoulder,
with a liberal use of claws. The cat I remember best for this sort of
thing was living with one of my aunts many years ago. Cleo liked sitting
on the top of open doors and then leaping to the shoulder of anyone
passing through the door. I was staying with my aunt and uncle, and
carelessly walked through the kitchen door while wearing a sleeveless
nightgown that did not have a high neckline. I must have jumped, startled
by Cleo's sudden landing on my shoulder, and she lost her balance and slid
down my chest, desperatedly trying to slow her fall with her claws. It
took many years for the deepest of the resultant scars to disappear - one
doctor actually asked me if I'd had breast surgery. I don't think the
doctor was much of a cat fan - she appeared to find my explanation a bit
odd.

LOL! Caliban does that too! And there's no one around to save me! The
only way to get him off me is to wiggle around violently, but of course
that makes him hang on with all his claws, until he gets fed up and
jumps off.
