A PA neighbor sent me a note, her husband saw a box by the road on
Saturday, and investigated on Sunday, it was hald full of snow and a
kitten - she's holding it in their garage will get a vet to check it out
and aksed if I will adopt it when I return in April.  I said yes.  It's
been cold up there, how someone can throw away a kitten in such weather
is beyond understanding but no worse that many of the horrid stories
that we hear.  AT least it's safe and warm now.  Morm

Unbelievable! So glad your neighbour took the poor little mite in, and
that you will give him/her a home.

So glad that your neighbour stopped and saved the poor kitten.  So glad that
you can adopt it!  Any more details on the kitten - sex, colour, etc...?

Oh No!! I am *so* glad they found that little one. Some people are
heartless.

Not just heartless, but in many places, they broke the law and should
be prosecuted. That person pretty much tried to kill that kitten - and
in a slow and agonizing way.

I'm so glad you're going to adopt her!

Cowards. I'm glad you're adopting her too.

I don't condone treating ANY creature that way, but I
understand freezing to death is not all that "agonizing" -
at least for humans.  You "get sleepy", lose consciousness
from hypothermia, and just don't wake up again.

Well, you're right about that. Among ways to die, I'd pick freezing
to death over a lot of other ways. But before losing conciousness, it
must be lonely, scary, and, well, *cold*.

I have to agree with that - however, I suspect that dying is
ALWAYS "lonely" and "scary", however many relatives and
close friends may surround you!

Poor baby!  He/she  must have been so frightened and cold.  Thank
goodness the kitten is safe now!  And as you say, thank goodness it
was not subjected to even WORSE treatment.  Dirty litterbox offerings
to the heartless sod who dumped the poor kitten, even so.

Makes you wonder if it was a drive by dumping. Or if it fell out
of / off a vehicle by accident somehow? I'd not be in a hurry to
condemn anyone. Without being sure.

In any case, glad kitty is getting good care, now.

I think this kitten is so lucky.  TW for this post I've attached
that describes what could have happened.

Yesterday morning I went out on my deck to have a morning smoke. My wife
doesn't allow me to smoke in the house. As I stepped out I saw what I
believed to be the cutest little kitten lying on the edge of my deck
looking down to the ground below. It was bitter cold the temp. on my
thermometer read 0. I walked over to the kitten and to my horror it had
froze to death. A large lump grew in my stomach, being a lover of cats and
having two of my own, this saddened me greatly. I thought to myself about
how this poor cat had suffered and cried in the night. The weather man said
the night before that we would have the coldest night of the year. This was
very true as I had stayed up late the night before and worked on my
computer until around 3:00 a.m. I would take a break about every two hours
and go outside to have a cigarette. Each time I went out I bundled up and
braced myself for the frigid wind that was blowing, not hard but enough to
make it bitter. The mercury fell steady all night and the last time I
checked it was around -5 degrees. The only thing I can imagine as to why
this kitten ended up on my deck, was sighting me outside and seeing a
chance to discover warmth if it could only get my attention. It never made
it in time to catch my eye.
My wife and I returned home after celebrating New Years Eve with
friends last night and the thought of that poor kitten gripped me again.
Still lying on the deck gripping the rail and frozen in place. I know that
it was feeling no pain anymore but it was still very cold outside. The
thought reduced me to tears as I watched my own cats walking circles around
our legs smelling the dog that had licked our feet earlier this evening at
our friends house. How can someone let this happen! I went outside to where
Orange Peel(we post named him) lay. Picking him up, seeing the pain of
death that was frozen on his face, I sobbed. My wife had retrieved a
shoebox, washcloth, and tissue paper in which we wrapped him and prepared
him for burial. The box was to small so I retrieved another from the
garage. With a black marker I filled out the face of the box.

Rest In Peace          Good kitties always
Orange Peel           Bring peace to those
    unknown-Dec 31 1997       Who love them. Gone
                              too soon, but you're
                              in a warmer Place.

Please make sure your pets are provided proper warmth during the winter
months. Bring them in when it's cold. We all know they are animals but the
fur coat sometimes is not enough to save their lives. We also know that
they pass on. If you have a family pet you know the love and adoration they
hold for you. They rely on you and they TRUST that you won't hurt them.
They believe in you for all you do and they never doubt your decisions.
They are the best friends any of us have ever had. I never knew this
kitten, but I can still hear the cries in my head that I wish I would have
heard the night before. It was the saddest start to a new year I have ever
had. Somewhere there is a little girl or boy that could use a friend. Make
every effort you can to save the lives of our pets and remember to have
your cat's spayed or neutered. Unwanted strays rarely have a chance to
survive the winters cold realities.

OMG! :( That is the saddest saddest story.

I have just now remembered something that I'd forgotten for nearly sixty
years.

I had two grandmothers, one I referred to as the birdie grandma and the
other as the kitty grandma.   I've always remembered that much.  One love
birds.  But I don't really remember why I called the other the kitty
grandma.  Except that one weekend we went to visit her home next to an apple
orchard in West Virginia.  I was probably between two and three because
Grandpa died before I was three and Grandma moved.  They took me outside to
see the new litter of kittens that the cat had under the back of the house.
Only when we got there the kittens had frozen overnight.

Amazing how clearly a memory can come back that has been nearly buried with
the right trigger.

I'm going to have to ask my sister about this when I see her in May.  She
would have been ten or eleven and I know she was with me so I know she will
remember.

brings me back to when I was little, there was a kitten that hung around the
house across the street, I used to sit and pock fleas off it while it'd purr,
then one morning when I rushed over, I found the poor thing frozen to the cellar
door.  The people next door, who I disliked, disavowed any knowleddge of a
kitten tho they had the only cats in the neighborhood.

Thank you so much for doing this, Norm.
