The Bluff City Cat Show was FUN :) (LONG)

How could it not be? :)  I've never been to a cat show before so it was a
real treat.  Hundreds of cats in big fancy kennels in an auditorium at the
community college less than 3 miles down the street.  The only problem was I
couldn't last more than 3 hours walking through the show.  My knee started
to bother me and I'd neglected to take my collapsible cane with me.  Still,
I saw most, if not all, of the cats.

There were three judging arenas for different types of cats and after an
arena would finish up with one type (for example, Persians) then they'd
switch up and call for cats in another category in that particular arena.
All three arenas were judging simultaneously so it was hard to know which
one to watch!  Maybe this is the way they always work; as I said, this was
my first experience with a show.

I saw the most beautiful Silver Tabby.  It was a medium-haired silver with
large dark concentric circles on its sides.  Quite unusual looking.  There
was a fluffy solid white bobtail cat with startling emerald green eyes.
There were a couple of longhaired Scottish folds and they were both pretty
and showed well.  But the Scottish Fold that took best of breed had
perfectly round amost burnt orange eyes, very long fluffy white fur with
large orange spots and an utterly amazing tail!

There was only one Russian blue, which I thought odd (but Mir-mir is much
prettier!).  A number of Havana Brown's were shown; I'd never really seen
one before.  Only a couple of Maine Coons but still lovely (but no
Samazon's!).  There were a number of Sphynx cats and they were very sweet
but I can see why they might take a while to grow on you.

One poor Chocolate Point Siamese had, according the breeder, gone into heat
while making the trip to the show... that cat was certainly making herself
heard!!! LOL

Aside from the Siamese making a racket, I've never heard so many little
mrrphs and meows in one place before.  As I walked past the plush kennel of
one of the Persians it got out of its bed and softly meowed at me.  It was a
black and white with a sweet flat face.  It just wanted to have a little
chat :)

[Aside from the cats, the young children attending the show - as
spectators - were *remarkably* well behaved.  They loved looking at the cats
and I didn't hear one single child crying or pitching a fit.  YAY!]

Now, was it you, Sherry who asked about the show for possibly attending next
year and selling those homemade cat trees your husband makes?  I know you
don't live too far from me.  There would definitely be a market for them
there!  There were *lots* of cat things for sale but they were all just
commercial things you could buy at any PetCo, PetSmart, WalMart or Target.
Brushes and combs; wand-style feather toys; glitter and mylar balls; oval
cup-style beds and even a couple of those pyramid beds (not nearly as nice
as Persia's).  Nary a cat tree in sight.  But I can certainly see someone in
a crowd that size of cat lovers being interested!

All in all, it was the best $5 I've spent in a long, long time :)  I'll be
looking for the show again next year!

cat shows are dangerous places; I can never go to one without spending
far too money on random items of cat care paraphernalia, toys,
gadgets, etc that I am sure jessie does not need, next one I go to I
will HAVE to take along just the entrance money and nothing else or I
will be bankrupt. Last one I went to in january I came home with
several new toys, some extra strong catnip 'cigars', another
scratching post and a radiator hammock bed thingy which she as only
just taken to sitting in, stallholders must see me coming!

I often wonder whether the cats think they are going to human show,
with the different varieties being paraded in front of them as they
recline in their viewing compartments. They never look terribly
impressed with the exhibits on display i.e us

I wasn't intending to buy anything and as I mentioned in my post, most of
what they had for sale is available at the local PetCo or PetSmart anyway so
not terribly tempting.  Nothing caught my eye that would have made me pull
out my credit card.  Sherry's husband's hand made cat trees might be another
story :)

There's a good point.  Except it's not the humans being constantly groomed
prior to judging.  And I heard a number of those cats PURRRRRRING as they
were being brushed and combed.  The thing I thought I heard, subliminally at
least, was, "Help! She can comb me but *she bathes me once a WEEK!*"  Oh
dear, I'm sorry, kitty!  LOL

Oh, I was half-joking. DH won't retire for another ten years. But I
*do* think there's a good market for custom cat trees and it would be
a fun hobby-source-of-income-excuse-to-travel after retirement.
I'm glad you liked the show. Even though I wouldn't ever buy a
purebred, I still loved looking at them.
Last year in OKC, they booked the cat show and the pigeon show in the
same large exhibit hall at the fairgrounds. What a faux paus!

Oh dear!  Well trust me, the Cat Fancier people won't make the cats and
pigeon show mistake LOL  If nothing else come see the show.  Hundreds of
kitties in one room!  And the kittens competition, I nearly swooned.  All in
all, it was a sight to see!  Yet I came home greeted at the door by Persia
and thought, here's the best kitty ever.  I told her, if I had a ribbon to
give you I would.  I gave her scritches and hugs instead :D
