What any observant cat slave could have told the experts...

"Cats suffer stress, experts say

Cats can suffer from stress-related illness like humans, a study by animal
experts suggests.

Rivalry with another cat is the biggest source of feline anxiety closely
followed by moving home or the arrival of a new member of the owner's family.

Experts compared 31 cats with bladder disease to 24 healthy cats in the same
households and used a control group of 125 other healthy cats.

Sick cats generally got more stressed by other cats in the house, they said.

Stress trigger

Dr Danielle Gunn-Moore, senior lecturer in feline medicine at Edinburgh
University's school of veterinary studies, said feline lower urinary tract
disease was frustrating for vets and owners because most cases had no apparent
cause.

"This group of diseases of the bladder is most commonly seen in pedigree,
middle-aged, overweight male cats which don't go out much and eat a dry food
diet.

"We believed stress could be a trigger and wanted to identify differences in
the cats' environments and temperaments which might cause this condition."

University researchers suggest cats with such illnesses should be fed wet food
and encouraged to drink more fluid by adding tuna-flavoured ice cubes to water.

The Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty Animals has welcomed the
research.

Spokeswoman Doreen Graham said: "We've always known cats are extremely
sensitive and this study highlights a problem more widespread than previously
thought." "

I do believe the phrase "No sh*t, Sherlock!" springs to mind, as any observant
cat slave can tell if their owners are stressed ;-)

Yep, as my (wonderful) vet informed me almost three years ago when Gossamer
had her second UTI.  Both occurred immediately following the christmas
holidays, an extremely crazy time of year for us [starting 12/17 there is an
"event" each week with the final one being my nephew's birthday on 1/15,
along with all the associated shopping craziness and a holiday office party
near the same time period].  We put a lot of extra effort last year into
keeping as close to a regular schedule as possible and, lo and behold, we
had no UTI trouble.

** We found this vet when Gossamer had her first UTI.  I really disliked my
existing vet office as the one good vet had left.  I saw blood in the
litterbox one night and freaked out.  DH looked for vets in the area on the
web and found "Floyd's Dog and Cat Repair".  OK this sounds like my kind of
person.  DH called, vet answered the phone himself and they talked about the
problem.  DH happened to notice the time... it was after 9 pm!  The vet said
he had had a long day and as long as she was able to pee she should be
alright until the next day but if we were terribly worried we could bring
her in immediately.
We brought her in the next morning, met a fantastic staff and a wonderful
(and tired) doctor.  Their love and care for their patients have made us
very happy, although the cats don't particularly like the 40 minute drive :/

When I got Max at 1yo from the vet he was so bad I named him "Twitch".
I figured he had come from a dynamic household (to be kinder than
required to those who gave him up to be put down!).  It took 6 months
but he calmed down and I reverted his name to Max.  I always thought his
urinary tract probem was a stress symptom, and it is ironic he became
the calmest and most assertive cat I've owned, particularly WRT dogs -
running them off *his* property.  Norm

I wonder about the people who returned Sunny, too. Sunny is a
cockatiel, not a cat, but the same theme is familiar. Her first family
returned her, saying that she was a vicious bird and drew blood when
she would bite them. I've had her for 14 years now, and the only time
she bit me is when I returned home after a couple days in the field
for Army training. I came home, cleaned the cage and put in fresh
water food, then sat down and fell asleep in the chair next to her
cage. She got disgusted when she saw I was asleep instead of giving
her the attention she felt was her due, socame over and bit me on the
nose (just a wake up nip, not hard). Course just was all before the
kittys came, nowadays Sunny and her cage mate Tiger only get out when
the cats are locked in the other room.

I read that article and wondered, how much did that study cost?
