Cat lovers:

Some months ago I shared my loss of Max, the finest cat I ever met.
I've uploaded a picture for your pleasure.

http://s179.photobucket.com/albums/w288/leicalover/?action=view&current=Max.jpg

Max was free, he came out of a wooded area of some 13,000 acres.
He moved in with me after he was grown.

We had five years together.
Just wanted to share what a free cat looks like in his prime.

Cheers.

He looks like a small lion.  And very sure of himself.

What very handsome cat he was; and that's a wonderful photograph of him.
He looks like a real character!

I'm glad you were able to share 5 years with him; I'm sure you both
would have wished for more. Life is cruel that way; and for that, I'm
very sorry.

One of the most amazing beings I ever met.

Please take spiders seriously.
Max outwitted coyotes and rattlesnakes, only to be the canary in the
coalmine for a brown recluse infestation.

I'll never forget the perfect eye-contact when I took him back to the vet
for the last time.
He knew.

I miss him so much.

I'm so sorry. I didn't realize how he died.
I think I'm beginning to understand the kind of relationship you must have
had with him.
I can see the depth of his intelligence in his eyes, and even maybe somewhat
the depth of his affection for you.
A rare blessing, that one.

What kind of lab is it, particle physics? I can't get the damn PDFs
to open, so I'm unable to read anything on that site.

What do you do there?

Cosmic ray imaging.

I've always been fascinated by Mayan and Incan cultures. There was a PBS
special on not too long ago about some recent discoveries.

I have a friend who teaches physics at Brandeis, and who has been working on
a supercollider project here and abroad for a number of years. Whenever I've
asked him to explain something -- like having "found" the missing quark, for
example -- his answers have always been forthcoming, precise, extensive and
clear as mud. I end up feeling as though I know *less* after he explains
things than I knew before.

Oh well. I'll stick to teaching computer skills to seniors...

Anyway, I bring this up because it was after one such "conversation" with him
that I decided my next cat is going to be named "Muon." :-)

Muons are ephemeral things. They decay into an electron and two neutrinos.
Here's another Max shot:

Maybe "mewon"?

Another great picture of a great cat.

I think I'm sufficiently ignorant of physics that it wouldn't bother me to
use "Muon" as a name, i.e., the whole decay thing wouldn't deter me.

We all decay.

Max had a lifetime of six years.
He shared the last five with me.

Actually we shared the hill together with me his whole life, but he moved in
when he was grown.

Max is the napping cat above the yellow circle that is obviously not part of
the picture.

My wife freely calls it a "love affair".

Many great cats are celebrated at this usenet address.
There will be more.
