I woke up sick two weeks ago today, nearly got over it by last weekend but
am having a relapse now - throat is very sore and glands in face and neck
are swelled up hard. No idea what this is (no fever).... never had anything
like it before. Walking a few blocks whacks me out - maybe weakness comes
from being unable to eat or sleep much due to pain. A persistent dry night
cough started the 2nd week, mostly gone now but I have a killer headache in
its place. Can I please have a few purrs?
None of the cats have caught whatever this is, thank goodness!

Not mumps, is it, maybe? Purrs for a quick recovery.

Can you get mumps more than once? I had it when I was 20. I think I was
sicker than this, back then. Can't really remember.

I don't think you can get mumps more than once. If your glands are up and
as hard as you say you certainly have some sort of infection going on. How
are your teeth? Sometimes you can get symptoms like this from having bad
teeth.
The problem with having infection in the teeth is that the bacteria can
travel to the heart valves and then you are in serious trouble. I have an
acquaintance who nearly died because of it. It took a while until the
hospital figured out what was going on and in the meantime it was really
touch and go.

Purrs are on the way. After this length of time, I'd recommend consulting a
doctor.

I was thinking of that today but was too busy. Might try it tomorrow if I am
not much better.

Purrs being sent for a swift recovery.
Your symptoms sound like something I had over the christmas period. It
took a whole month to get on top of whatever it was and I wouldn't
have recovered in that time without the help of antibiotics (which I
started taking 2 weeks into the sickness). So do go see your doctor.

Well, I might go see *a* doctor, since I don't really have a specific one.
The po' folks clinic here never seems to keep a doctor for more than a few
months, and I think I've only been there about four times in the 8 years
I've lived in the area.
Saturday of last week I felt so bad I was actually thinking of calling for
an ambulance. I called a friend instead. Guess I just needed some moral
support....

It's happening. I almost feel back to normal tonight, just in the short time
(7 hours) since I asked for the purrs!!!

Probably just some strange virus that's hanging on.
But.....
It also sounds a lot like carbon monoxide buildup in your
house.
Have you had cold weather for the past 2 weeks?
Do you have gas heat?
Is it worse during a cold night than a warm day?
Do you get an unusual amount of condensation on the
windows when the heat is running often?
If the answer to all these questions is "yes", you may want
to have the heating system checked.

Purrs on their way! I've had a persistant bug for about 2 months now, so I
feel your pain.

Have you seen a doctor? It sounds as though it might be
something serious! (Especially if it has lingered for more
than two weeks.)

Today it seems to definitely be on the way out. I slept 8 hours last night,
got up, stayed awake for a while, then fell back to sleep for a few more
hours. Now I feel a whole lot better than I did at this time yesterday. At
this rate I might be fully recovered by tomorrow or the next day.
I didn't have much spare cash last month after buying a variety of OTC meds.
Eventually I got some special herbal extracts for cold/flu and these were
very helpful but only lasted a few days because the bottles were small.
I highly recommend these extracts which are made right here in the town
where I live:
www.teetercreekherbs.com
I know the herbalist personally and he's very good at what he does. He now
has a new formula for cats, for the tick-borne illness that killed my
precious babies almost seven years ago....

I'm at least 80% well today. I was only about 60% when I asked for the
purrs.

I just saw this thread. I'm really slacking, this is the 2nd thread
I've missed the last few days.
Hope you're feeling much better by now. It sounds like strep to me. A
killer headache nearly always accompanies strep, and relapses are
common -- you can re-infect yourself IIRC. Anyway, hope you're on the
road to recovery.

The headache and swollen glands are about all that's left, and both are
reduced a lot since I asked for purrs. The oddball thing about this is I
felt perfectly fine the night before this thing hit me, when I went to bed,
and woke up 8 hours later feeling like death warmed over. I mostly stayed in
bed for that whole week although I could not sleep much due to the pain and
could not eat due to the pain and swelling. I took Yin Chiao tablets and
aspirins that first week because they were all I had in the house and I
wasn't able to go out. The 2nd week I had the herbal tinctures and I got
some ear cones which seemed to loosen things up quite a bit after two sets.
Anyway I think I am licking this, finally. At least I've been able to eat
and sleep some this (third) week.

I think that strep, or any major bacterial infection like that, usually
causes a high fever. My guess is that this is viral. You can get some
pretty weird swollen glands from viruses too. I have.
