MITCHELL (IN) - Not only did Mitchell firefighters extinguish a kitchen fire
Sunday, they revived two cats that inhaled too much smoke.

The fire was contained to the kitchen of the mobile home at on North Third
Street. It was caused by an electrical short because of an overloaded
circuit, said Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department Chief Tyler Duncan.

A boy of about 10 or 11 years old was asleep in the home when the fire
began, and smoke detectors woke him. He was not injured, but was examined by
Dunn Memorial Hospital ambulance personnel.

Sandy Snyder lived in the home, which is salvageable, Duncan said.

Duncan and his department were notified of the fire at 6:16 p.m. Sunday, and
Duncan was at the scene with a fire truck at 6:20 p.m. They had the blaze
under control within about four to five minutes.

While firefighters were suiting up at the scene, someone told them about
three dogs and two cats that were trapped inside. Duncan sent two
firefighters to extinguish the blaze, and two to rescue the animals, which
were hiding in the mobile home.

The dogs were not injured, but the two cats weren't breathing when they were
brought out.

"I didn't think they were going to be able to (save them) when they brought
them out," Duncan said. "But, the firemen didn't want to give up on them. I
was proud of them. . I've never seen an animal revived like that."

Duncan said firefighters put some water on the cats and slipped the felines'
faces down inside the firefighters' air masks. The men also massaged the
cats' chests with their thumbs.

Soon they were breathing on their own.

"They were really pleased we save the animals," Duncan added.

I have something to go with that.

The Creation of a Firefighter

When the Lord was creating firefighters
He was in to his sixth day of overtime
When an angel appeared and said...
"You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."
And the Lord said,
"Have you read the specifications on this person?"

"Firefighters have to be able to go for hours fighting fires or
tending to a person the usual everyday person would not touch,
while putting in the back of their mind the circumstances."
"They must be able to move a second's notice and not think twice
of what they are about to do, no matter the danger."
"They have to be in top physical condition at all times,
running on half eaten meals and they must have six pair of hands."

The angel shook her head slowly and said'
"Six pair of hands..... No Way!"

"Its not he hands that are causing me problems," said the Lord,
" Its the three pair of eyes the firefighter has to have."

"That's on the standard model?" the angel asked the Lord.

The Lord nodded,  " One pair to see through the fire and where their fellow
firefighters should fight the fire next.  Another pair, here on the side of
the head, to see their fellow firefighters and keep them safe.  And another
pair of eyes in the front so that they can look for victims caught in the
fire that need their help."

"Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve, "rest and work on this
tomorrow."

"I can't," said the Lord.
"I already have a model that can carry a 250 pound man down a flight of
stairs and to safety from a burning building, and can feed a family of five
on a Civil Service paycheck."

The angel circled the model of the firefighter very slowly,
"Can it think?"

"You bet," said the Lord.  "It can tell you the elements of a hundred fires,
recite procedures in their sleep that are needed to care for a person until
they reach the hospital.... And all the while they have to keep their wits
about themselves."

"They can deal with a scene of pain and hurt, coaxing a child's mother into
letting go of her child so that they can care for the child in need."

"And still they rarely get the recognition for a job well done, other than
from fellow firefighters."

Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the
firefighter.
"There's a leak," she pronounced.  "Lord, its a tear."
"What's the tear for?" asked the angel.

"It's a tear from bottled-up emotions for fallen comrades.
It's a tear for the commitment to that funny piece of cloth called the
American flag.
It's a tear for all the pain and suffering they have encountered.
And it's a tear for their commitment to caring for and saving the lives of
their fallen man!"

"What a wonderful feature, Lord you're a genius!"  replied the angel.

The Lord looked somber and said,  " I didn't put it there.

Wonderful story, thanks for posting! It always gives me hope when I hear
about firefighters - or any other people who have very tough jobs and
therefore need to be tough people - caring enough to try to save an
animal's life.

Somewhere, I got the message that tough guys wouldn't, and maybe even
shouldn't, care about a mere cat - it's great to see that idea contradicted.

Three cheers for the firemen who wouldn't give up on the kitties!
