Bosco's ordeal

Norm - 31 Jan 2007 16:11 GMT I took Bosco in last week for lack of appetite and learned his kidneys are in failure mode. Since then he's had to put up with me syringing food in, and subcut fluids twice a day, we've taken him off antibiotics in case that was interfering with his appetite. He's such a cuddlebug and everyone loves him for his good nature, I'd hate to lose him, so if anyone has some advice on how to deal with a cat in renal failure I'd appreciate comments, and purrs. Thanks, Norm

He may have eaten something that caused the kidney trouble since he is so young. you will get better at the Subcu's I'm sure.

Thanks, Norm If his kidneys have just started to go downhill, you might have him for quite a while if he's fed a diet made for cats with renal failure, and if you give him the subq fluids frequently. (You might not always have to do it twice a day once he's stabiliezed, but if that's what it takes, then that could be a huge help.) Lots of people have kept their elderly cats alive and pretty healthy by giving them regular fluids.
> http://pets.webshots.com/photo/2563849440026431655ALsyRX He is a beautiful boy. And so are all your others! I've seen your photo album before, but I looked through it again just now. What a great bunch, and they seem to get along so well. Love the one of them in the car.
Purrs for everyone,

My main problem is incompetence with the subcut, I soak him more than get the fluids in.

They don't really get along so well, only Bosco seems to bridge the gap between the females and the males, well Harry is benign too. Quinn is The Cat, his affection and antics constantly endear himself to Katie and I both, but he does tease the girls, I think because their reaction is so gratifying, where the other boys react with slaps and boxing matches the girls hisspit and run for cover. I constantly marvel how a refugee from the street is such a domesticated animal, he's the only one I can roughhouse with without paying scratch or bite penalties, though that might not be believeable from this pic:

Thanks for your and the other responses, I just hope that Bosco can weather the storm and stop cringing when I approach him.

Thanks, Norm Norm, I don't have any advice, although I do know that quite a few people here can give you very informed, first hand knowledge. We can, however, send you lots of purrs and gentle headbutts for Bosco to feel better right awaqy and that with the subQ fluids and the right diet he begins eating again and perks right up.

Norm - 02 Feb 2007 22:06 GMT He was such a sweet cat, everyone and every cat loved him, and it was so sudden. He looked so peaceful by the catdoor, it was with more than the usual guilt I went to fetch him for his subcut injectio, I guess mercifully his ordeal is over. I'm beginning to understand people who when they lose a beloved pet refuse to get another; Bosco I'm so sorry I failed you, :love you. Norm

Norm - 03 Feb 2007 12:31 GMT > Norm > [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > > Joyce Thank you all for your kind comments. The vet asked Thursday about euthanizing, while I didn't want him to suffer I wasn't ready toi let go.
Some memories: He loved, like Willie, to run - on the railing in PA and along the pool here where he'd jump onto the bench at the end and put his paws on the back, my signal to bend down and let him nuzzle my face; in bed it was more of the same, he alsways wanted to be touching. if I was lying on the sofa watching the tube, he'd lie on my chest facing me. He got noticed at the pound because he was the first cat to climb in my lap Here, he loved to showoff with the catflap, some days he'd just burst through then calmly come back in, while the others were more circumspect. The only thing that worried me was one day he decided to explore across the street, which gets some amount of traffic evading traffic lights, but after carrying him back inside twcide, he decided it was more fun to trot along the sidewalk (I'd see him because the PC is setup by the kitchen window) to the front door, which I'd open for him, he'd stroll in likea regal figure; speaking of which in all black and with front legs that seemed a little shorter than rear, Bosco'd look like a miniature black leopard when he walked, with his shoulders moving suppily up and down.
They were always ravenouis aftern they arrived from the pound and Bosco too, the melee to get to the food bowls when put on the floor, and Bosco wasn't beyond hooking a chop off my plate at dinner, innocent looks notwithstanding. He wasn't a hunter in PA but in FL he caught onto how to catch lizards but was slow to eat them until Quinn stole a couple from him. He was so full of joie de vivre until a week ago, it's hard to cope with the suddennes.

Katiri - 03 Feb 2007 01:12 GMT Norm, I'll miss him also but you did so much for him. He was in a loving home and not the shelter and he had a lovely down comforter to sleep on. He had siblings to play with and a wonderful yard to roam. He was a seasoned traveler and enjoyed country and city living. He got the choicest foods, salmon and chicken, shrimp and pork. He loved the wand and even tried playing with the tennis ball. He'll be missed but he did not miss out on life or love. Thank you for taking him in.
A poem by Sara Henderson Hay always poses this question of how we feel about our kids.
"Put the rubber mouse away, Pick the spools up off the floor, What was velvet shod and gay, Will not want them any more.
What was warm, is strangely cold, Whence dissolved the little breath? How could this small body hold So immense a thing as death?"
Norm - 03 Feb 2007 12:33 GMT Thank you for your love and help with my purrball, and the poem. Norm

It's a grief all of us know who have loved cats and lost them to age and illness. Bosco sounded like a very sweet, and love-worthy cat. Mourn him by all means, but don't make long-term decisions about not getting another cat while you're grieving. Me, I find a new cat friend to love is a great anodyne to the pain of losing a previous cat. And there are a great many cats who need homes and would love to keep you company.
