Many of you remember all the health issues my mom has had these past
couple of years. The latest one was the macular degeneration that was
resolved with surgery. Well, mom just had a new eye study done and there
seems to be a new hole forming in the macula. She's going to the
specialist in Mexico City on Tuesday. Any spare purrs you may have would
be most appreciated. I'm not sure if mom can handle another surgery like
the one she had before.
Thanks.

Absolutely, Victor. Mega-purrs to your mom that something can be done
short of surgery, or if not, that surgery is successful and mom makes it
through fine.

Hi Victor,
Could you find out if your mom could have the silicone oil macula repair
like I did? The preferred option for the surgeons is gas - although if
they had to keep their own head down on a table for a month I doubt it would
be!
The upside of the oil is that is no need to do the head down stuff. You can
walk about normally.
The downside is that sight is very poor while the oil is inside the eye and
there is the small matter of another operation a few weeks later to take the
oil out and put saline in instead. Also the oil usually contaminates the
lens leading to the need for a lens replacement a while later due to
cataract.
Despite all these "disadvantages" I don't regret opting for the oil instead
of gas. Keeping my head down for a month was simply not an option for me.
I ended up with four ops in all but it seems to be holding up quite well.
There is some clouding of vision recently which I need to get looked into,
but this is usually due to the lens implant "fogging up" and can be
corrected by blasting it with a laser.
I'm leaving it for the moment in favour of getting the zip-up done in a
couple of weeks.
They repaired my macula by glueing it together with plasma from my own
blood, did they do this with your mom?

I don't recall the details on how the repair was done. In any case, mom
will see the specialist Wednesday, so I'll call her in the evening.

I'm so sorry your mom has to go through all the stress of this again. Lots
of purrs on the way that they can come up with an easier treatment this time
around.
As you can imagine, since I'm deaf the very idea of severe vision problems
terrifies me.

Not at all! Purrs are never late. :)
Just talked to my mom. She was unable to see the specialist who did
her operation (due to an incompetent secretary), but she met with his
assistant (also a specialist, but not as senior) who was there during
surgery. The lady doctor told mom she was just fine and her surgery
was a success. She explained why she still had some vision problems,
but she said that was normal and there is nothing to worry about!
She's going back in 3 months for another check-up, but in the
meantime, she was given a clean bill of health!
Thanks so much for all the purrs, I know they worked.
Cheers.
