I have lurked here for a long time. I wanted to ask you all to please
purr for a kitty I had to have put to sleep today. She was in my
garden and acting like she was in pain or sick, so I put her in a
kitty carrier and took her to the vet. She was a tortoiseshell kitty
with a Manx tail and didn't mind when I picked her up so I don't think
she was feral. She was very, very thin.

My vet looked at her and found that because of the Manx tail being so
short she wasn't able to defecate. Because of that and her being so
thin he felt the best thing to do was put her out of her pain. I would
have kept her if there had been any chance she could have recovered.

I don't know what the condition is called but one of my other cats
lost part of his tail and the vet was worried the same thing might
happen to him. He recovered though and is fine today.

Where I live there are fields and woods all around my house and people
dump animals out. It makes me very angry that people do that. But
anyway, please say a prayer or light a candle for this little kitty.
Thank you.

Purrs sent. Whilst this kitty may not yet have a name, I'm sure that they
are waiting for you at Rainbow Bridge. Because the amount of time that we
loved them doesn't matter, its that we loved at all that counts.

The gene that causes the Manx tail is either identical or very close to
the one that causes spina bifida in Humans. Apparently Manx's are very
very prone to constipation because they have an abnormally small anus
(Yes I should get out more!)

You did her a great kindness. I will light a candle (Just lately I seem
to be getting into lighting candles for RB felines and people) for her
to go across the Bridge and be united with lots of cats including 3 (4
if you count Travis, yes we had named her, we were watching "Taxi
Driver" when we decided to adopt her but the woman who had her decided
to keep her and she was accidentally killed at 5 months old) from my
clowders

Will do, Renee.  I'm sorry you had the sad task of helping the little
one to The Bridge.  But she was lucky to have you for a little while to
care for her.

How sad :-( I'll light a candle for the unknown kitty. At least someone
cared enough to take away her suffering, thank you Renee.

Purrs and many of them for a little one that my heart wants to call Dorothea,
"gift of God." Whatever her name is, they'll know it over the Bridge; and
whatever happens, someday she will thank you for loving enough to give the
gift of mercy to a little stranger and count you among her loved ones.

Blessed be,
Baha

Replied via e-mail.

FYI, the condition is called congenital spinal cord anomaly. It's a
blanket term for any spinal deformation caused by any gene that produces
either taillessness or bobtail. Manxes, Cymrics, American and Japanese
bobtails, and any other such breeds with either of those innate tail
configurations are susceptible to this abnormality, which is usually
noticeable in early kittenhood.

It was very kind of you to do this for an unknown kitty.   I will light a
candle for her journey to RB, for her to play in the meadows with those who
have gone before and they will welcome her.
