Ketzl's Dad - 23 Jan 2007 21:32 GMT
I realize I never properly introduced myself to this group, or to my cat,
fully. We live in NYC. Some of you may have seen this already in alt.cats.

Ketzl (4-1/2-yr-old tabby adopted three years ago) won't drink from his water
bowl on the floor (which I've since dispensed with) but will only drink water
out of a glass. At first, he tried persistently to drink from my water glass;
I almost always have one nearby. Often he would push it over, resulting in
water spills all over the place.

He finally trained me :-) to proffer a glass of his own, and I selected
a short one (what we used to call a highball glass: heavy base, not
very tall and slightly wider.) This, of course, had to be placed on the
dresser, not on the floor. (PS: He's not fond -- in fact, very UNfond
-- of bourbon, which he occasionally notices in a highball glass beside
me in the evening. Sniffs it, winces a bit, and then tries to bury the
glass. He also tries to bury my coffee cup in the morning.)

I make sure to refresh his water glass frequently (he prefers cold over
room-temperature, you see.) His behavior with the glass is that he paws
the side gently, enough to make it move slightly so that the water is
animated. I think he does this so he can see the water level and
doesn't end up sticking his nose in it, which happens on occasion,
causing him to snort unceremoniously. He'll push the glass in one
direction about an inch, drink, then stop for a breather. Before he
starts to drink again he pushes the glass in the other direction, so it
pretty much stays in front of him. (I used to think he was trying to
pick up the glass, the way I do, but I think that was just wishful
thinking on my part.)

On occasion he puts a paw into the glass, to shake up the water a
little, I think for the same reason: to see where the water level is.

As for human food: forget it. Although he's very interested in what I'm
eating, he sniffs it and decides it isn't for him. I've offered small
bits of chicken, beef, FISH even, and he won't eat it. (Do you think it
might be the ubiquitous garlic?) He seems more interested in the bone
after it's been stripped of meat. (But I don't let him have them.) I
found this interesting because on the surrender papers I got when I
adopted him, the previous owner listed as one of the reasons for giving
him up (in addition to his fighting with her other two cats): "He
"steals my other cats' food *and MINE!*" I envisioned myself cowering
with my plate at dinner time, but not so.

Well, I've rambled, and I apologize, but since I'm new to the group I
thought I'd give a little intro to My Lord and Master Ketzl.

Thanks for the compliment, even though I personally had nothing to do with
his looks. Apparently he gets them from his momma, someone he didn't get to
know all that long.

Perhaps he'd enjoy a Drinkwell cat fountain?  Persia won't drink water from
a bowl but I had one heck of a time keeping her from sticking her head under
the running water when I was brushing my teeth.  I solved the problem by
getting her her very own cat fountain.  And, to solve the problem of cold
water vs. room temp, just add ice cubes :)

Persia doesn't like people food, either.  Except for cornbread.  For some
reason she loves cornbread.

He sent me out for one of those *loooong* ago. He played with it for a while,
and still on rare occasions I might catch him actually drinking from it, but
he just wants a glass of his own, like dad.

All my prior cats loved scraps, pasta even. I'm not surprised he doesn't like
pasta, but he won't even eat salmon, other than Iams.

You're definitely right about the caffeine, but I'm thinking maybe a beer

You mean like Tyche?  One of mine loves nothing more than an unattended
alcoholic drink and/or cup of coffee.

None of mine like fish, not even Smokey, my ex-feral.  I don't think he
recognizes it as "food" since he never ate fish in the wild.  He
exhibits a strong preference for poultry, rabbit and ham.

Very nice to meet you and your fascinating companion Ketzl!
I'm Liz, aka meee, and have 7 masters at the moment, which keeps me busy.
Jasmine is an ex stray orange spotty tabby who turned up and had kittens on
me. She is now enjoying the role of crotchety grandma, bopping anyone who's
around when she's in a Mood, and demanding cuddles so she can shed copious
amounts of fur everywhere. Her three sons are Congo, Moe, and Garfield,
Congo is Top Cat, is growing into an enormous orange and white monster,
Garfield (orange tabby too) is his right hand man, the brains of the
operation (he'd get on with ketzl as he likes a cold glass of water too).
Moe is the Mummy's boy, loves a cuddle but often gets picked on by the
others. he's orange, with unusual brick red eyes. Then there's the
meezers...Cougar is a choc tortie smoke, with a lovely gentle
personality...she was named Cougar as she is a bit timid and growled
ferociously over her food so the others at the lady's house where she was
bred would bully her out of it, but since she's come here she's stopped
growling as there's plenty of fudz!! She's got one fat little kitten, just
two weeks old. Tahzha is the new girl, a beautiful seal tortie who is still
adjusting to life with us, but is doing a marvellous job (with some help
from Cougar) of raising her 7 kittens. Mango is our stud, he's a red point
siamese, and is my baby, who refuses to talk to all other hoomins, and has a
problem with Jasmine and Congo that we are working on...with some help from
the lovely people here :)
This is a great group, and i hope you enjoy joining in :)

Thanks for your feedback and your (re-)intro. I don't know how anyone can
manage so many cats; I have my hands full with just one. Not to mention, in a
one-bedroom apartment in Manhattan... space is at a premium.

He is, in fact, very intelligent and considerably shy of the camera. I'm
lucky to have gotten those pix, but I'm still working on building his
portfolio. After the first flash went off, he quickly learned to turn the
other way, most often.

In the past few weeks he's become very interested in the television. Prior to
that, he seemed not to like it at all, frequently retreating to the bedroom
while I was watching. Then it happened that there was a PBS show on "Winter
in Yellowstone" -- lots of snow scenes with animals treading the snow. Lots
of contrast; the images were very easy to see.

There was one scene where a fox was gingerly tiptoeing across the screen,
listening intently for mice and voles beneath the surface and pouncing
nose-first into the snow every so often in attempts to grab one. That's what
caught Ketzl's attention: he was transfixed, with an expression of
near-alarm. It was the turning point for him, and I realized why.

A couple of years ago I took him to the beach house (Rhode Island) and we
were out in the yard enjoying the wide open spaces, when I realized a fox was
approaching from the woods. Of course, my first thought was Ketzl, but I
didn't see him anywhere. A couple of sharp hand-claps from me sent the fox
running, but I still couldn't see Ketzl anywhere. Eventually I heard him
calling, and realized he had scurried underneath the gazebo. Smart, huh? It
seems he even disappeared under it before the fox was actually in sight.

It seems the image of the fox on TV reminded him of that incident, and since
then he's been very attentive to TV shows, particularly nature programs.
There was another PBS show on big cats that I swear he wanted me to
videotape!

Anyway, it's nice to be among others who share the passion.

LOL, my cats like shows about the big cats, too. They seem to recognize
the common "felinity" of all the cats.

A lot of cats prefer moving water over still.  We have a big dish under a
dripping faucet in the back yard and it is everyones favorite.  Indoors we
put ice in their water.

Beautiful silky grey cat.  Loved the photos of Ketzl.

I have a male cat that also likes to "animate" the water before
drinking it.  I, too, think it is so he can see the water so he won't
stick his face in it.  We use big clear plastic bowls for the water.
There are two of them on the kitchen floor.  He'll take his paw and
push the bowl, look at the water and then drink.

Love the sound of my kitties lapping up the water.  So cute.  Of course
very preferable to the dog's snorts, grunts and snores.

No water quirks here, although Smokey will attack the water streaming out of

Cali likes her water cold and filtered, the other two don't care so much.
Cleo even likes Eau de Toilet.

LOL, Smokey likes a lot of human food, but she has decided that pretty much
any tube based food (Pepperoni, Weiners, etc) s/b buried.
Cleo is a garbeurator and will eat pretty much anything offered, in very
large quantities. Although she's close to 8 pounds.
Cali prefers dry cat food, but Pepperoni, Doritos, Hot Wings, Deli Beef,
Biscotti and Bacon are OK.

Ketzl is drawn to and fascinated by streaming water, but won't actually touch
it.

> Cleo even likes Eau de Toilet.

Yep; I had to be retrained to put the lid down always on the toilet seat
unless I wanted to catch frequent glimpses of Ketzl's butt sticking up out of
the toilet while he drank. I hadn't had to do that since my last dog. Tux
(Ketzl's feline predecessor) wouldn't go near the toilet. She didn't like the
weird noise it made when flushed and would run from the room.

LOL. Tube-based food would never appeal to Ketzl, especially not anything
spicy like pepperoni. I did manage to convince him to take a small piece of
chicken in his mouth recently, but I found it on the floor a half-hour later,
unchewed in the least.

Well I have, in the past, but none who insisted on the *lid* being down. Now
the seat: that's another matter.

Anyway, if the situation changes, I will agree that she will be pleased about
the toilet seat lid being down (since that implies that the seat is also
down) but she probably won't be too keen on the cat toys strewn all over the
place

Then again: what am I saying? If she and the K-man don't get along, there
won't be any future for the two of us.

I know my priorities.

Oh, duh, right - the LID. Shows you what I know about toilet seat wars. :)

I haven't lived with a man since I was at home with mom & dad, except for
the odd roommate here and there. And I've lived alone (ie, without other
humans) for quite some time now. Nobody to argue about the toilet seat or
to leave it up so I fall in in the middle of the night.

Actually, I keep the lid down all the time, because I don't particularly
want kitties drinking from The Bowl. Even though it probably wouldn't hurt
them, I just find it a bit gross.

water  glass. I have started using a sports bottle instead as he would not
leave the glass alone.

Ketzl's a very handsome boy.

I just wanted to say welcome.  I live in Georgia with four rescued cats,
Hobbes, Lacey, Sam and Barnabus.  Hobbes is my overweight, diabetic,
orange tabby; Sam is an asthmatic, grey tabby; Lacey is a calico
princess and Barnabus is a black hellion who loves his mamma and Miranda
(not necessarily in that order).  I look forward to reading about Ketzl
and you in the future.

Personally I think sanity's overated. ;-)

welcome to this group:-) Ketzl is such a beauty and as far as I can
see from your writing, he trained you well:-)

I'm Inge from Germany and I'm slave to 11 furballs. First was Tientje
(Dutch word for 10 gilders, as that was the fee we paid for him in the
shelter). He is a lovely black tom aged 13 years now. Then came She,
12 years old female, wearing a brown-black striped coat with red spots
on it. Next came Owl, 5 year old silver-tabby persian, who had no
chance to find a home because of a genetic defect on his nose. To give
him a playmate his age, Dax joined us. He is a silver-shaded persian,
who is, although neutered, very interested in (human) females:-) Then
we got Chiara, 9 years old silver-shaded persian. We didn't expect her
to be pregnant when we took her. She had 5 babies: Lady Mortisha, 5,
silver-tabby girl, Bandit, 5, silver-tabby tom, Rasputin, 5,
silver-shaded tom, Cottonball, 5, silver-shaded tom and Rasputin, 5,
silver-shaded tom. Well, we didn't want to keep them all, but when
they were old enough to go to new homes, we couldn't part anymore:-)
The last member of our household is Sirikit, 5, seal-point persian. We
took her, because she was the ugliest baby, we ever saw:-)) Now that
she is no kid anymore, she became a beautiful and lovely lady cat.

In case you are interested, you find stories and tons of pics on my
website:-)

Thanks, Inge. Your web site is wonderful, as are your "ketzleh". :-)

I have said it before: I don't know how one manages to be owned by so many
cats; Ketzl can be a real handful at times, and although I have owned more
than one at a time in the past (when I lived in a big house in the suburbs
with yards and trees and cat-doors) in my one-bedroom apartment on the eighth
floor in Manhattan, One Cat Is Enough!

You're fortunate to have a (human) companion who also likes cats. I've seen
relationships go terribly sour when one of the two "isn't wild about" cats,
say, to the point where "I don't WANT THAT CAT ON THE BED!" (Right. Maybe YOU
should sleep on the floor...)

I spent only a little time visiting your web site but I will go back and
browse some more later.

We couldn't imagine how a life with so many cats would be. We had 2
cats for 20 years. The cats now are our 'second set'. And because we
don't have children, we love them dearly. Each cat has his own
character. We are happy that they have different times when they want
our attention:-) To have 11 cats was never planned.

Fortunately we live in a perfect environment for the cats. We have a
big house with a big garden (which is fenced to keep the cats inside -
we call it 'Al-cat-raz') and they have a catflap to come and go as
they want. And best of all: they like each other and us:-)

LOL, now I'm used to it. The most amazing thing is, that they
'reassemble' when I turn around:-) And they have a special order, who
may rest on which place. Chiara and Lady Mortisha are _always_ on my
right side, Rasputin and Cottonball is _always_ on my left side.
Bandit and Owl sort of discuss, which of them can rest on my tummy:-)

I meant to post that this was a wonderful picture! I remember seeing it
before, but it was great to see it again. How sweet to fall asleep with
not one, but both arms around cats! And not even *all* the cats. :) Your
group seems very loyal, curling up all around you like that. They must
adore you. Or else, maybe they were cold. :)

Thank you:-) You are right, I posted this picture earlier. But because
this is my all-time favorite picture, I sometimes post it again:-)

The only cats who are there when I fall asleep are Chiara, Lady
Mortisha and Rasputin. The other cats come when I'm sound asleep:-)

The funny thing is, they play with each other and like each other, but
they never curl up with each other, except Chiara and Lady Mortisha.
They only curl up like this with me. They must really love me:-)) We
sleep on a waterbed, which is always warm and cosy:-)
