Last night I ran my hand along Persia's back and there was a literally shower of sparks. Poor thing! Time to wipe her down with a dryer fabric softener sheet, I guess.

I've tried explaining that after I take off my fleece-lined coat, the friction it causes by rubbing against my wool shirt is going to produce a mongo spark. And it's almost always on one of those great ears. I guess if it happened enough he'd learn; he's a quick study.
I caught him watching the "One Smart Cat" video over and over this morning. Now I'm going to have to baby-proof all my screw-top containers.

I never had much problem with static electricity in California, and so far the humidity here in Arizona has been high enough so even though it's much colder than I expected, there haven't been any sparks generated. However, it IS desert country, which implies very dry air.... (Maybe it's just that most of my house-slippers and casual shoes have rubber soles?)

(Maybe it's just that most of my house-slippers and casual shoes > have rubber soles?) We are getting static in No California right now. Its been a dry year so there is very little humidity. So that combined with the cold created some nasty surprises. Used fabric softener works, misting a bit of water works. And when its bad, I buy Static Guard in a spray can. It really works. It is designed to keep your clothes from clinging where they aren't supposed to, but prevents sparks as well.

Last time I went grocery shopping, here in Nashville, Tennessee, it was on a cold, dry day. As I rolled my shopping cart along the concrete floor, I was averaging a static electricity shock in my fingers from the metal cart handle every thirty seconds or so. I finally put my leather gloves back on, and didn't have any further shocks. I took them off before unloading the cart at the cash register, and still didn't get shocked, so I suspect that the partial electrical insulation they gave allowed the static electricity charges to bleed off through me at a gradual enough pace that I didn't feel anything.

Persia will ingest those potentially harmful chemicals when she cleans herself.
I recall reading a newspaper article many years ago warning not to use dryer sheets on infant and toddler clothing, due to the chemicals left on the clothing, causing possible allergic reactions, etc.
If they aren't safe for small children, where most of it will stay on the outside of the child, they *can't* be safe for a cat to ingest.

But Persia does spark! Dang, I feel bad every time I touch her and it sets off a spark. Poor kitty, her ears practically cringe and yet she wants me to pet her. I want to, too. But then *spark*. Poor baby. It's that time of year.

The book Hints from Heloise suggested wiping things like TVs, shelves, and appliances with a used dryer sheet to make them collect less dust.

Worth a try, anyway.

My slippers do have rubber soles! But I spark anything I touch anyway. Shall we just say I have an "electric personality" ? LOL

In the wintertime, what I would do was dig a few fingers under Betty's fur with my left hand while petting her, to keep us in constant skin contact to avoid electrostatic discharges.

Caliban knows there's electricity between him and Meowmie this time of year. He always comes to meet me at the door when I get home, but these last few days (when the inter finally set in here in Finland), he still comes to meet me, but he flinches all the way. He just knows he's going to be 'bitten' when I touch him. But he still comes for his 'welcome home' tummy rub.

I don't rub them on Persia nor do I use them for my clothes. I just hate making her look like a funny electric cat in the winter time :) Poor little girl, one touch after I walk on the carpet and her ears or her tail spark.

Last night I [quoted text clipped - 17 lines] > >Jill You could try touching an electrical device before petting Persia, like a lamp; that's what I do with Kenzie. I have hot water heat (radiators) so no humidifier instal on the furnace is possible.
I put some pans of water on the radiators, but if I have much, I get condensation on the windows, before it's enough to dampen out static electricity.
Kenzie has learned to touch me with a paw, rather than head butt me, because of the sparks. But sometimes she forgets, and gets zapped on her poor nose :-(

I always think about how cats' noses are like a million times more sensitive than ours, and maybe they'd feel like I would if I was drenched in perfume. Wonder if any aren't scented so much. Lately I've been heating water up on the stovetop (with a drop of vanilla or a pinch of cinnamon in it, so it smells like I'm actually baking LOL)....but I've been watching the humidity gauge and it doesn't seem to be doing much good. I need another little humidifier.

Just a sort of comment about her being sparky ;) I feel sorry for her, every time I touch her she lights up.
