The heading says it all. Dr Haney was right to caution me against
getting my hopes up too high. This morning I went in to check on his
progress. Dr Haney said that when he came in last night at 10 for
Rocky's second treatment Rocky seemed fine. Sometime between 10 last
night and this morning Rocky departed for the bridge in his sleep.
Thanks going out to all who were pulling for Rocky to make it through
this.

I am so very sorry to hear this. I know exactly how you feel, because
that is very much the same way we lost our beloved Quetzie a few years ago.
Let us know if there is anything we can do to help.

Rocky was who he was--a cat who ran free, and yet unlike most ferals
he knew what it was to be loved, and fed, and safe. And when he was
in need of help he knew who to come to, to make sure that he would be
cared for and warm and safe.
He passed naturally, restfully, in a secure place--not alone and
frightened in the cold and dark.
It is hard to lose him--yet his life was blessed by you.

This post made tears come to my eyes, but you are so right. Most ferals
never have the chance to be fed well and get love. How lucky Rocky was to
get a forever home, even if it wasn't for as long as Steve hoped for. You
did bless his life, Steve, he must have been so happy and secure at last
with you. If I knew my life was coming to an end tomorrow, I'd like it to

Steve,
I am so very sorry for your loss. I didn't get a chance to tell you this
yesterday because I managed to have *all* of my files eaten up by a
virus not 30 minutes after reading your post. But I hurt for you
yesterday and last night when I got home I hugged Sam close and cried in
his fur for Rocky and you and Little Bit and Sammy. Sam seemed to
understand because he stayed still the entire 10 minutes I held him. We
lit a candle last night to help guide Rocky on his journey.
Yowie wrote a story once about a "shard of heart" that RB kitties show
off to each other. Stray cats who never knew the love of a human ask how
they can get a shard of their own. Rocky will be able to show off his
"shard of Steve's heart" with pride when the other cats show theirs.
This is something he wouldn't have been able to share had it not been
for you. I hope eventually you can receive some solice knowing that
Rocky had you and Little Bit and Sammy for a family and didn't have to
make the trip to the Bridge unloved.
We'll be thinking of you in the days to come and will send purrs your
way. Rocky was a lucky cat to have had you and I'm sure you know you
were lucky to have known Rocky and had his love.

I'd like to read that post. Here's hoping that the shards that go with our
departing beloved animals grow back, else I have not many more shards left
before my heart is all used up.
> Rocky had you and Little Bit and Sammy for a family and didn't have to

Steve, aren't you the guy who carries cat food around in a truck and feeds
ferals? If so, from now on you can do it in Rocky's memory. Dedicate those
feedings to him and remember him fondly each time, and I'll bet that before
long, he will return in the form of another kitty that can't resist you.

IIRC, it's Dan M who carries food and feeds strays while he's making
deliveries.
I do feed the neighborhood kitties. When I first moved here, about 7
years ago, there was a small colony of ferals living in/under a couple
vacant houses, across the allwy and down a ways. Glad to report that I
think the now the feral colony has just about disappeared. Part of the
reason the colony is gone is that the city forced to owners of the
houses to either rennovate or tear down the run down houses. I see a
couple youngsters, must have been born last spring, that I don't know
where they live. But the rest of the regulars at my outside food bowl
have homes.
Three of us fed the colony and worked on getting them neutered,
catching any kittens and trying to find them homes. When we started
out we were doing it independently, not the others were doing
anything. We didn't realise we were all feding them until I almost
moved last year and went around to see of any of the neighbors would
feed them if I bought the food. I can't really take much credit, since
all I did was put out food. The other two neigbors had already been
looking after the colony for quite a while before I moved in. This was
the colony that Rocky came from.
The neighbor across the street is the one who did most of the work,
starting about ten years ago. Not long ago he adopted out another mama
and (weaned) kittens he had found somewhere. He's works with his adult
son and grandsons rehabing old houses. When they find strays at empty
houses, he fosters them and then adopts them out. A real animal lover,
he has three cats, three dogs, chickens, turkeys, and even budgys.
Writing this, I think I'd better ask about fish, since it seems he has
everything else.
BTW, he's the one who hooked me up with that barn apartment I might
move in to. Still no news on whether that mopve will ever happen.

We're so sorry to read this, Steve. Rocky was an inspiration to those
who are trying to tame lost kitties and ferals. Our lives will be
lesser for his loss.
