owners cant be responsible and not over feed them

Except that this cat was a stray for 6 months - how do you explain that?

It sounds like he probably had several humans feeding him on a regular
basis, and was making the rounds.

OK, but then you can't blame it on an "irresponsible owner."

Some cats are really, really piggish eaters. Keeping food from them
takes dedication! Cherokee was like that.

Phantom no matter what  goes to every dish when the others are done and even
before and eats every thing in the bowl licks them clean than goes to dry
food and eats till he stuffed.  No matter what you do he does this.  You
can't keep him separate all day from the others.  I call him the fat boy of
the group but he has yet to get that big

And Caliban is like that. Food seems to be the only thing on his mind,
ever. OK, he plays a lot, too, but maybe he's honing his hunting skills
in order to get more FOOD.

It would be easy in this neighborhood.  Everyone I know leaves cat food and
water out year round, cat or no cat.  I'm a little surprised we don't have
any tubby cats running around, but they all seem to stay pretty much at
fighting weight.  Gotta maintain the rat patrol and the dog early warning
system.
