Seems like these worldwide purrs must be doing some good. You may have
guess from the my earlier posts that I was pretty down. I just got
back from the clinic - I was supposed to return at three, couldn't
wait and went an hour early.
I dreaded going in, fearing what the xrays showed. Guess what
NO BREAKS!!!!!!!
Dr Haney has already given him some meds to reduce the swelling. And
guess what
ROCKY CAN MOVE ONE OF THE PREVIOUSLY IMMOVABLE LEGS.!!!!!!
Dr Haney seemed much more opimistic than he was this morning. It's
still touch and go, and Rocky has to stay at the clinic to be watched
and get injections. Dr Haney warned me not to get my hopes too high,
but said there's definitely improvement. This morning I didn't have
any hopes, just prayers. I felt like dancing on the way out, even
though I was leaving without Rocky.
Just have to wait to see how much he improves, and how quickly. When
he comes home (notice I said when, guess that indicates my mood) he'll
probably still need oral meds for awhile. So, I imagine I'll be
moaning about how difficult it is to pill him and asking for advice.
Oh, and he's just going to have to get used to the idea of being an
inside cat.
I've told before how I chose Dr Haney - just happened to be the
closest clinic when LB decided to bless me and have her babies here.
That was sure a lucky choice, he's not one of those money grubbing
TEDs, he cares about his patients. Course I knew that when he gave me
the pamphlets for new cat owners with the anti-declaw literature.
I haven't figured out where the money for this will be coming from.
Like lots of vet clinics, they have signs posted that bills are to be
paid when you pick up the animal. I still have half of Sammy's bill to
pay. When I went in this morning I told him I wasn't sure how I was
going to pay. He said not to worry, we'd work something out, the
important thing was to do our best for Rocky. I need to hold a family
meeting and tell this guys that landscaping is pretty much over until
March. This is the time of year we're supposed to hunker down and
limit spending to my retirement pay. Guess it's time to think
seriously about finding a winter job. I've been thinking about just
quitting the landscaping and getting a real job.
OK, enough rambling (can anyone tell I'm just a tad happy with Rocky's
improvement). Thanks for all the purrs - they DO help. I'll post
another update when I go in tomorrow morning to check for progress.

Great News! Would I be out of line to ask if I could send you a small
something towards his bill? I really do love hearing stories about
Rocky and how he has gone from feral to loved and loving in such a short
time. I'd like to be a part of that success story!

That's really great news Steve. Purrs continuing for a complete eventual
recovery (suspect it might be a long job) Can he empty his bladder himself?
It's a good sign if he can.

Yes he can. Last night I wasn't too sure. The first time I helped him
into the litter box he didn't do anything. During the night I helped
him into the box a couple times, and he urinated a little each time.
When I got back from the clinic I discovered that one time I wasn't
fast enough helping him in the box, and he went on the towel I keep
under the box to help control the litter scatter.
That probably explains some of why LB was upset - she's our resident
latrine matron and is really fussy about dirty boxes. I've explained
to LB that it was my fault for not helping him out sooner, but she
looks dubious. I'm afraid I made another gaff when I took Rocky to the
clinic. Once again I forgot to take Sammy pink security towel out of
the carrier, so expect her to be upset with me when we get it back.
Last time I did that she dragged it out and was upset until I washed
the terrible TED smell off.
Thanks for the story in the thread you started. It does sound that
Rocky and your friend's cat may have had the same type of injury-
though it sounds like Rocky's isn't quite as bad.
I was really afraid that his injury had hurt his blood circulation.
Now I think his feet were just cold because he had been dragging them
through the wet grass. Then, after I found them cold the first time, I
let my imagination make them seem colder than his front feet later on.
Dr Haney said his circulation seems to be OK, so I've decided to stop
worrying about that.

Excellent advise, and I confess I didn't follow it today. Went to
TED's office instead of breakfast, didn't feel like eating lunch
because I was afraid of bad news, and then about an hour ago realized
I hadn't done a thing about dinner. Luckily I made a pot of green
chili over the weekend that could be easily warmed, so had a decent
meal.
And, of course, no sleep last night. hmmm, I may just sleep in
tomorrow - nope want to get over first thing and check Rocky's
progress, better hit the sack early tonight instead

Oh Thank God. I just knew there had to be some hope or our vet wouldn't
have waited as long as he did to give up on Maggie. There had to be cases
that do turn out OK.
Now Rocky, rest, stay still, rest, wiggle your toes, be able to pee and poop
normally, rest some more, and purr for Steve. I think he loves you.

This is terrific news :)
I know that with broken backs/necks (or even suspected broken
backs/necks) in people, one of the first things they do these days is
inject drugs (steroids? I'm not really sure) to reduce swelling around
the spine because swelling can cause a lot of damage on its own. It's
nice to see things like this working their way into the veterinary
arena too! :)
Still hoping Rocky's recovery continues :)

It was in a bank in Phoenix with Hazel and TJ looking after it. The
bank gave us the the fund account free. As far as i know, it was last
used to help Ginger-lyn a year or two ago. I think Yowie or Bridget
might know a phone number for one of them.

So much better news. I'd be glad to send a little to help with costs. I
think that while it is good not to be over optomistic, it's BETTER and in a
fairly short time, so that bodes well. He may never be quite the same, but
he doesn't really know that. That's why they are so adaptable. They don't
sit and moan about what used to be like we humans. All reports welcome and
the prayers will continue.

YIPPEE!!! How appropriately your little champion is named. He sounds like
a fighter. I admire that in a living being. We're continuing the purrs for
the both of you.
Many localities have a Veterinary Emergency Fund, a sort of common pot so
that people can apply during unexpected times like yours, or if they are
low or fixed income. If your vet participates you can apply through the
office. Otherwise, get him alone and make private arrangements. This
fellow sounds like a good doctor.
Now, get some food and sleep. We'll purr you into comfort from around the
world.
Blessed be,

(snip of good news)
I'm so glad I read this post before I saw your original message!! We
are sending big honkin purrs for Rocky to completely recover from
whatever it is that happened to him, poor little guy. Let us know
when it's appropriate, and Lula will start sending the special
inside-kitty purrs. Tallulah hasn't been outside since her spay, and
the adjustment period was a lot shorter than I expected. I hope it
will be the same for Rocky.
I don't know the status of the catslaves vet fund, but I echo others
here in saying I'd love to help if you'll provide your vet's contact
info. Purring is all very well, and it can work wonders, but when one
of our own rpca kitties is having a crisis, it's nice to be able to do
*something* besides purr and pray and hope from a distance, and we
can't all be there to take shifts at helping him in the litterbox.

First the bad news - I posted an update this morning that he didn't
make it through the night. Dr Haney thinks he probably threw a clot in
the early morning hours, as he continued to show signs of improvement
last night at ten during his scond treatment. This morning it seemed
he had peacefully passed over the bridge in his sleep, no signs of
thrashing around or anything, in fact no signs that he was ever in any
pain.
I don't expect we'll ever know what caused the problem. A couple
people suggested checking his claws, which can indicate that he tried
to dig into the pavement when hit by a car. But, his claws didn't seem
to indicate this, and no obvious signs he was struck by anything.
Megan (zuzu) posted a link,
http://www.catclinic.co.uk/health/thromboem.htm , that sometimes the
first indication of a serious heart problem is loss of control of the
back legs and cold feet (which fits Rocky's condition) and extreme
distress and pain (which, thankfully, doesn't fit).
Someone else suggested a stroke, which I suppose would fit his partial
paralysis when you compare it to what happens to a human after a
stroke.
