Poll: Forgotten Tongues

Pat - 03 Jan 2007 07:46 GMT I used to think it was common for a cat, when interrupted suddenly by some noise or motion; to which it must give momentary undivided attention, in the process of licking itself, to "freeze" with the tip of its tongue sticking out of a closed mouth, and then appear to forget that the tongue is sticking out for some length of time. In fact I can't remember any of the cats of my past failing to do this on a regular basis. If you haven't seen it, I can testify that it is positively delightful to see, I suppose because the cat seems to be unaware and/or unconcerned that it's tongue is sticking out, which if you think about it is quite odd, and looks a just silly enough to make one laugh out loud.
But now that I am surrounded by seven cats that I watch a good deal of the time, I've noticed that only one of the seven - Baby Eyes - is ever caught with her tongue sticking out. She does it quite regularly, and the others never do!
This leaves me wondering whether I had a long string of normal-tongue showing or abnormal tongue-showing cats in my life - and, in either case, is Baby Eyes (my oldest) the end of the line of tongue-forgetters for the time being?
Also, is there a specific descriptive term for this phenomenon, like we have the term upside-downy head for another specific thing that cats do from time to time? "Tongue- forgetter" is a rather awkward phrase but is all I can think of at the moment.
Who else has seen a cat forget that its tongue is out?

Topper used to do that. It gave him a 2.0 boost in "cute factor"

Tippy and Kramer quite frequently have thier tounges sticking out. Kramer especially does it frequently, he even sleeps with it sticking out.

Hi Pat, Cinder does this a lot.

What breed is your cat? I am wondering if this is more common in cats with Persian genes? MLB
Pat - 03 Jan 2007 18:15 GMT > What breed is your cat? I am wondering if this is more common in cats > with Persian genes? MLB Baby Eyes is a moggie, her hair is long but not as long as Beatrice, Billy and Lily. Past cats I've seen do this have all been moggies as well, some with long hair, some not. I doubt that any of them had any persian influence.
Exocat - 03 Jan 2007 19:11 GMT > I am wondering if this is more common in cats with Persian genes? MLB Doubt it: my Bandit (white & black DSH) has shorthaired moggie + siamese blood, definitely nothing persian, yet he does this all the time. Combined with his pink nosie/little black patch, the pink tonguie makes a really cute combination :)
Sometimes I touch his tongue to see if that gets him to put it in, but it doesn't. If he wants it out, out it stays!

When she licks my fingers, I can grab her tongue, if I'm fast enough, and hold onto it. Then she just sits there and looks at me with disdain!! ;>
She's another who likes to leave her tongue out.

Marina - 03 Jan 2007 18:47 GMT > Who else has seen a cat forget that its tongue is out? Frank used to forget his tongue all the time. I don't recall seeing Mir and Cali do it.

I don't recall him doing it awake though. It's really cute. I've mentioned before about Frank being inbred, and just not smart. Honest, I love him but he is dumb for a cat. Cute though. http://members.aol.com/sriddles/frank3.jpg

tanada - 03 Jan 2007 22:03 GMT >> Who else has seen a cat forget that its tongue is out? > > Frank used to forget his tongue all the time. I don't recall seeing Mir > and Cali do it. I love the term "forget his/her tongue." It fits so well. Tanada, a tuxedo moggy forgets her tongue a lot. Merlin, Huey, and Qui Gun Kit forget their tongues on occasion, but not like Tanada, my gassy old womancat.
Pam S. a gassy (and grouchy) old woman in her own right

When I saw "forget her tongue", my first thought was of a slip of the tongue, or forgetting oneself, saying something one ought not say.
I think tongue retraction inattention is very cute. I wish I could see your crew's sticking-out tongues.
MMJ once posted a link to lots of pictures of when Lizzie fell asleep with her tongue out. Betty used to leave her tongue sticking out when her cancer progressed. It was very cute. It was sticking out at her end, too. It made a very sad expression. But kitty tongues are cute nevertheless, and I'll always remember how wonderful she was, even when she was not well.

Amelia does that frequently. Not as often now as she used to, but still often enough to notice. None of the others do very often.

How about "tippy-tongue"? It's really only the tip of the tongue I've ever seen, not like a dog lolling about panting with it's tongue hanging out.

I think I prefer Pam's idea ("forgot his/her tongue") to this one, but am still hoping we can come up with something even more apt.

It needs to be something sweet and goofy. I mean they don't realize they've left their tongue sticking out. And it is cute to see. And cute to see them catch themselves at it. Wish I were better with words.
I think Sam, our baddest cat did this more than any others have since. Really messed up his image.
