RPCA FAQ version 2.0

Mark Edwards - 01 Jan 2007 17:44 GMT
I had some free time on my hands this weekend (big grin) - I've
checked with Yowie, and have updated and rehomed the RPCA FAQ, and
will take over maintenance of it:

 http://professional-geek.com/personal/files/html/rpca/rpcafaq.htm

This is a frames version, but I think I have coded to make a noframes
version reachable. If your browser doesn't allow frames, let me know.

Or you can just go directly to the contents page at:

 http://professional-geek.com/personal/files/html/rpca/contents.htm

I've also added a stylesheet to pretty it up a bit.

Now for the fun part. Much of the content is the original content, and
some of it may be stale or out of date. I will try to verify that the
links in the FAQ are still good (and I'm pretty sure this could take
me a while), including the homepages of people listed in it:

http://professional-geek.com/personal/files/html/rpca/more.htm#Homepages

If y'all could go through the FAQ and let me know of any changes that
need to be made - especially in regards to email addresses and
homepage URLs, I would greatly appreciate it.

Let me know what you think.

Mark Edwards

Could we add photo sites to the charter Mark ??

Do you mean a list of free photo sites (possibly), or allowing
posting of binaries (no), or something else?

Certainly. There are a few resources listed under the Posting Guide,
section 7.1.2.1, "But how are you supposed to see this adorable
picture of my cat if I can't attach it to my message".

If you have additional URLs to free photo sites, I'll be glad to add
them.

I have added photobuckets to the list of free photo sites, and your
site to the homepages.

I have also removed the homepage listing for David Yehudah, as it has
been deactivated after he passed away.

I have updated my own homepage, which link was ten years old (yikes!)
and decidedly obsolete.

I have updated the cat name list, adding a few by specific request,
and giving each alphabetic set its own bulleted block for (slightly)
easier reading (I hope - grin).

I fixed a bug which I introduced, that made all of the contents page
light blue on Internet Explorer, but not on Firefox.

Second-level headers are now highlighted, as are quotes, disclaimers
and warnings.

Sadly, the free beer feature is delayed again, until a future
version. Also, there is still no free lunch - we couldn't get it to
interface properly with the veeblefetzer valve...

Oh yes - no more Angelfire-mandated advertisements or malware forced
on the pages - I ripped those right out of the HTML, very first thing.

Yup, I'm glad someone else has taken it up. I just don't have the time any
more. Still, as an archive of what RPCA looked 10 years ago (has it really
been 10 years?) its not bad. Whilst there's many who are no longer posting,
there are still many many people who are still here and posting. Says
something about the place, don't you think?

I don't think it's been that long, actually. I remember when you were
putting it together, and I had already been part of this newsgroup for
at least a couple of years, at that time. And I joined in late 1999.
I think you created the FAQ maybe more like 5 years ago. Unless you
started it years earlier, and were just continuing it 5 years ago. That
was about when I first heard about you doing it, though!

I first mentioned doing a FAQ on Sat, Sep 2, 2000 at 6:26 pm.

So you were far closer with your 5 years than I was with my 10 :-).

It seems like a lifetime ago. We'd just moved into our house. We had no
thoughts of getting married or having a kid. The computer (four or 5
computers ago) was in what is now Cary's room. Fluffy was still a teenager.
Catslaves hadn't been invented yet, because the WTC hadn't been hit by
terrorists yet. Dave Yehudah was alive and well, as was JEM and Renee
Darvin. *sigh*.

Wow! I guess my memory isn't *totally* hopeless. :) I'm usually grateful
if I manage to remember which decade something happened. :)

Yes, there was. As you probably remember, in the days after 9-11, RPCA
members were desperately searching for other RPCA members, because alot of
the news feeds were down, and people couldn't post.

However, e-mail was getting through more than news messages.

So, in an effort to keep in contact with RPCA people (and as a place to chat
about stuff not relevant to RPCA and otherwise hang out) Catslaves the yahoo
group was created.

Well... sort of. The original site URL now belongs to a cat-themed
marketing firm (is this ironic, or what?). There is at least one site
that still mirrors the Bonsai Kittens, though. And Bonsai Kittens are
still a hoax, as described on Snopes.

I have updated the Bonsai Kittens section to note the changes.

Now, that's a shame. Mark. I thought you were a computer wiz, and here
you can't get the simplest things to work. ;o)

I suppose Miranda's and Caliban's names could be added to the names.

Its not my FAQ anymore, but I'd suggest putting an asterisk after cats who
have gone to RB, rather than deleting their names altogether. After all,
there was once an RPCA cat called Frank who lives on in memory and at the
Bridge.  Just because he is no longer in this realm doesn't mean he no
longer has a name.

to the names list as well.  Mark we need to do some major names updates in

Looks great, Mark.  Some of the links are flakey, though. Don't know
if it's a temporary thing or not, but I could not get to Helen's site
with Waffles and Jills story.  Also, the picture of a "meatloaf"
appears to be no longer available.  I would have loved to see that
one.  I just love Kliban's cats.  In fact, I have a new 2007 calendar
of his.

Anyhow, happy new year and thanks for updating the FAQ.

I expect a lot of links are flakey - nobody has really had time to
check them out. My own listed homepage was ten years out of date, and
I could have fixed that years ago...

My first priorty was to modernize the site a bit. Now I'm hoping to
update the content, which is likely to be the harder part (grin).

Thank you, and you're welcome.

And thanks to Yowie for creating the FAQ so that we have something to
update in the first place. Most of the content is still good. It's the
old links that will most need to be updated.

Wow! I went to the first page, only to discover that "Smudge" is the

A bug: the "1 CONTENTS" link in the left frame points to section 5
"WHAT IS RPCA?"

Actually, that was by design, to keep from having Contents show in
both frames. I also figured the first information frame ought to show
"WHAT IS RPCA".

Remove the heading "Contents" and renumber accordingly?

There are bits and peices I had intended to fix up. Like the "What not to
post" and "Taboos" cover similar grounds but are in completely different
sections, and I wanted to somehow put them together.

The stuff about the Daves is no longer relevant (but could be included for
history's sake rather than anything else)

It probably needs a good overhaul and a bit of a re-write. Happy to help in
dribs & drabs :-)

Looks great!

The bookmark for "6.4.2 The Mothership" does not take me to that item,
just to the top of section 6.

Also could you please add to the names file "Five" for our brown/black
female tabby?  Thanks!

Hmmm. This works fine from here. Are you talking about the link in
Contents?

Correct.  The contents link in the left frame from 6.4.2 takes me to
the top of 6, when using IE7 (popup blocking disabled).  The link
works fine with FireFox 2.  I don't have IE6 anymore so I can't check
that.

Weird. It works like that with my IE7 too, so I've verified this.
Must be one of those IE things that needs a hack. I'll see what I can
do to work around this (watch it be something obvious - grin).

Of course. And no need for Boyfie to leave a fresh dove, either.
Done.

Thank you for doing this.

Could you add the name 'Poes' and 'Draic' to you list of cat-names?

'Poes' is Dutch for kitty, she was a stray I found her when I was young and
responded to 'here, kitty, kitty' (but in dutch). She responded so well to
'kitty' I never changed her name. She is pure white and able to climb
backwards out of trees. It's a long story, but since I live alone she's
become an indoor cat and is now about 16 years old now, she has white fur.

The other cat is Draic and is also a stray I found. She's a beautiful
tri-color, black, white, orange. With white mittens, a white tux and one red
eye-patch. She's not a callico because the colors on some parts of her body
mix. However, she has the callico demon gene *evil grin*, ask TED when she
treated her. I'll leave it up to you whether you write her down as a callico
or as a tri-color (black, white, orange cat).  She'd be the first black,
white, orange on the list unless I misinterpreted the term callico. (I
thought in a callico the colors aren't supposed to mix colors, the colors
black and orange mix on her back). Draic is very cute despite harming a vet
:)

Well Licky can point out that he's listed further up the alphabet
than they are, so "Nyah nyah nyah" back at them (grin).

Purrs for your efforts!

Laku's name already is on the list, as he's the older kitty of the
household, but our younger master Nico's name is not there, yet.
Nico would appreciate to be added too.

The link to my homepage is terribly old.  Pre-Thailand days even.  I
don't have an actual website of Vino pics now, just a yahoo album, the
link is http://new.photos.yahoo.com/badwilson/album/576460762310441612

Sorry to respond to my own post but this prompted me to look at my yahoo
album and I'm not impressed with recent changes to yahoo photos.  So I
made a new Vino album which can be seen at:
http://picasaweb.google.com/badwilson
I think I might actually get rid of all my yahoo pics.

Could you please add Soncek to "The names of our cats" list, Mark?
Thank you so much for doing all this.
