Just curious... it sounds wonderful in theory, but I'm wondering if
the cats would deign to set paw in it. I'd never heard of them before
but somebody just got one for her three cats. I'm tempted... but three
hundred dollars is a fortune to spend on the cats!

I've never heard of it, so I have no idea what it is.

It's a type of litter box.  It's supposed to be self-washing and
self-flushing.  You can see a picture here:

Personally, I'm skeptical.  Moreover, I don't find it to be a large chore
using the "traditional" method of scooping.  On the other hand, there is a
particular type of litter scoop that I *really* like.  It is called
Litter-Lifter and sells for $6.95.  It doesn't look much different in the
picture, but the "tines" are wedge-shaped, so clean litter simply drops
through without shaking.  As a result, clumps are easily lifted out and do
not break or disintegrate.  I find that I only need to do a complete change
of litter about 1/3 or 1/4 as often as with other scoops I used.

Thanks, MaryL.  I'm skeptical too.  It doesn't look like something a cat
would use.  It's shaped wrong.  A cat needs a litter box that is longer than
it is wide.  Besides, you can scoop a lot of litter for $300!

Maintaining traditional litterboxes for me just isn't a big deal. I
scoop every morning, add litter when it gets low, but only actually do
a complete change & wash the boxes about once a month. Incidentally, I
also have the scoop Mary describes. It's really amazing how a simple
design change really does make the tool so much more efficient.

It's a self-cleaning litterbox that scoops itself out every day and
flushes the waste down the toilet for you... then it washes itself
clean. The self-cleaning sounds like a great idea to me, but I think
the washing sounds like serious overkill! I asked because somebody on
another newsgroup bought one for Christmas and she had a hard time
getting her cats to accept it as a litterbox... she eventually
persuaded them and hopefully all will be well. I can see why she
wanted it - she's disabled and taking care of the litterbox (and
hauling cat litter) must be a nearly unmanageable chore for her.

would be interested to see how it works, not sure it would stay clean enough
for one of mine... and wet?  OEJ would NOT touch it if it had water on it,
she thinks she will melt if she comes in too much contact with water, Lee

It's not wet - after it washes itself, it dries itself with hot air!
So theoretically it should end up sparking clean, fluffy and ready for
use... it sounds like it would be good for a really fastidious cat but
frankly, none of ours could care less - as long as there's an (open)
litterbox they'll use it, and they don't care if it hasn't been
cleaned for a week (don't ask me how I know...)

TV would like it then he thinks DH should clean the whole thing every time
he pees, Lee, starting to consider that she will look into the thing if we
remodel the bathroom in a year or so,
