I've been away for a bit but want to thank everyone again for the holiday cards which are still arriving in the mail <G> John came to visit for a couple of days after dealing with some things at his mom's house in Rochester. He brought a number of things back to give me, including several very early small oil paintings he did (1968-ish) of KITTENS! They are so sweet :) I have to find a way to scan them or photograph them well; they are on canvas panels but he framed them very crudely and I can't even slip a screwdriver under the nails to pry them loose. Oh well. I'll figure out something ;) And BLING! His mother never threw anything away. So I got to pick through boxes and boxes (and more boxes!) of costume jewelry, some of which dates back to the 1930's and up through the 1960's. What Persia wouldn't give to have some of this stuff draped over her pretty grey fur ;) Crystals and faux pearls and hand-painted beads. There's a rhinestone bracelet that might have made a great kitty collar but sorry, Persia, it's mine. LOL Anyway, he got word that his Mom has noticed his absence. No, she's not doing any better; she still can't move much (she has regained some movement on her left side but not much) and she can't speak. He's not even sure she recognizes him. But he normally visits every day and he hasn't been there for a week and apparently she's gotten agitated because she's had no visitors. So he left this morning to drive back home to see his mom. As soon as I can scan or photograph the kitty paintings (I've named one of them Brandy the Brindle-Cat) I will post them somewhere you can see. They are very sweet and so precious to me. Happy Holidays! Jill Jill I don't want to sound mercenary but if that costume jewelry is that old, don't throw it out, have it appraised, there is a big market for some of that stuff. Sadly, my mother gave me her costume jewelry and with the exception of a few pieces I threw most of it away when I was in my early 20's. Of course years later I'm cringing! No way am I throwing this stuff away and I'm not selling it, either. It's John's connection to his mother and while her taste wasn't always the greatest (LOL) some of this stuff is quite pretty! Next time he goes back he's bringing her hat collection (ooooh!) and vintage dresses. But really, the cat paintings are the greatest. Lovely. Some of that old jewelry may be > valuable. MLB One of my favourite shows! But I'm (despite what some folks may think I should do) not going to sell this jewelry. I made the mistake of tossing out the rhinestones Mom gave me when I was in my early 20's, thinking to myself "what am I going to do with this?" Well, now I know; I should have kept it and cherished it and had fun with it. Fashion styles come back around and so does jewelry. Gotta find a way to show you folks the kittens he painted. I've done fairly well in either scanning with the cover wide open or with taking digital photographs of paintings and then cropping and enlarging.
