I did blood and urine lab work on all three of my kitties. They were
all QUITE put out that their own Meowmie was sticking them with
needles. I apologized by giving them gooshy food that night.
The lab results are back and in terms of bloodwork, they all are fine.
However, Imp and Mayhem have struvite crystals. Dang it....
Okay so it's time for a diet change. They need to lose weight anyway,
so after conferring with my doctors, I'm changing them over to w/d. It
will help them lose weight and help acidfy their urine and hopefully
that will get rid of the crystals.
*sigh* kinda embarassing though, to have fat cats who also have urine
crystals. Ah well, good thing i found it out NOW.
Anyway more snippets from my adventures..............
Rosie, one of our hospital cats is quite fluffy and is also kinda
skittish. She likes to come up to you while you're at the computer
entering info and put her paws up on your leg. But if you stand up to
pet her she runs away. Well a few weeks back, Dr. S told one of our
groomers to give her a lion cut. She looked SOOOOOO funny afterwards.
I mean most cats with a lion cut don't usually look funny. but they do
if they have the little kitty belly that hangs down. You know what i
mean, the little pooch of skin that hangs down from the cat's belly.
Well in this case, not only does Rosie have one but it's FOLDED and so
pendulous that it looks like she has an udder. And it swings and
bounces when she runs. EEEK!!!! It's quite cute.

Mango is doing awesome. He has this low MROOWW that shows that Siamese
in him. I hate to say it but it sounds like he's dying. He also LOVES
to hang out in the break room, which also is our kitchen. And when
people sit down for lunch he always has to inspect it.
Here are pics of him when i found him in the break room. The chairs
had been put up and a bed had been put in. I didn't have the heart to
move him.

Isn't he a cutie? He's also a TOTAL ham when it comes to visitors.
He'll jump over the counter in the reception/waiting room and go
schmooze with the other clients. One client has fallen in love with
him and Dr. C was talking to her about his history and stuff. The
woman seemed interested, but after she left, Dr. C said, "You know, I
don't know how i can let Mango GO!" We've all been suckered by him, in
one way or another.
What a sweetie....

I was in the treatment room when suddenly i heard this howling and
yowling coming from the other room where we do grooming. I peek in and
see my coworker giving this cat a bath. And this is cat is just
SCREAMING bloody murder. Poor guy, but I saw him when he came in and
he was covered in mats. So even though he complains every step of the
way, he sure look a hell of a lot better when he was done.
*************
Had a dog come in for vomiting on Friday and the next day we had to do
an exploratory surgery. I hadn't set up for an exploratory in a long
time, and I was a little nervous, since i didn't know where everything
was. I knew what instruments and equipment were needed, but i didn't
know where they were. Somehow though i managed to find everything and
help out the doctor. We pulled a piece of a cloth toy from this dog's
gut.
But I'm quite proud of myself and how i managed to handle things. The
dog recovered quite nicely and went home today. She was always leaning
forward to lick my face too. Even when she recovered from surgery, I
was there petting her and she was totally out of it from the pain meds,
she still managed to lift her head and lick my cheek. Awww.....
************
Had my 90 day review and i'm off probation. So now i'm a permanent
employee and even my supervisor is happy with me. I couldn't be
happier right now since i'm learning a lot and taking charge of cases
and seeing them all the way through admittance to hospitalization to
discharge. Actually right now i've been dealing with a dog that had a
splenic tumor that resulted in him having his whole spleen taken out.
That was last Friday and since then he's been touch and go with
complications. I've been caring for him almost every step of the way
and even driving him to the emergency clinic for overnight care and
then picking him up the next morning. (the owners are unable to do so,
and we do charge for transporting) He seems to be getting better, but
he could do either way at this point. But you do develop a bond with a
patient you care for every few hours, especially also when you put him
in your own car and he jumps from the back seat to the front seat.
I'll probabaly have to pick him up tomorrow morning and care for him
again. I certainly hope he gets better.
That's all for now. I have to get Mischief away from my dinner.
GET DOWN AND LEAVE MY CHICKEN ALONE!!!
Take care,
Kristi

She sounds cute. Doesn't she want to be picked up and put on your
lap? When Betty would stand up and put her paws on my leg, it meant
she wanted to be held.

When I took a sabbatical from the group while my arm mended, you were having

are going much better for you now!

Grrrrrrr.........
Both our receptionists called in sick today, so one of the techs had to
cover the front desk, leaving me and the only other tech to handle the
back. Since I couldn't be spared, we sent a kennel worker to pick up
the dog.
When he was brought back, he looked terrible. He could scarcely walk.
And his skin was all red and bruised. I cared for him as best as I
could, and Dr. C called the lab to see if the biopsy results from his
splenic tumor had come in.
I hooked him up to his fluids and did what i could. Then at around 10
am, I was trying to draw some blood to run some diagnostics tests when
Dr C told me not to worry about it. The biopsy results came back
hemangiosarcoma, an invasive form of cancer, and aside from chemo there
was nothing they could do.
My heart sank. You ten to bond with your patients, and in this case i
personally took care of this patient from when he came in, and
personally took him to and from the emergency clinic for the last five
days. The owners decided to end his suffering. When I came back from
lunch it had already been done.
*sigh* It just totally sucks......but at the same time this comes with
the territory. He had been suffering from complications since the
splenectomy so I guess it was only a matter of time.
I'm fine now, but i did have to take a moment to collect myself.
********
On a lighter note, Mango jumped the counter in reception again and
tried to sneak outside. Uh, our hospital cats are NOT allowed outside.
After several attempts to dissuade him, i had to shut him in his cage
for a bit. After shutting doors leading to reception i let him out
again. But i didn't take into accound the the 8 by 18 inch slot in the
wall of the doctor's office that leads to the reception area (the
doctor sticks files there for us to process) Within 5 minutes of
letting him out, I turned to see his beige tail slipping through the
slot. He ended up back in 'purgatory' again.
We don't like doing that, but it's also not safe for him to be walking
around in the waiting room. All it takes is someone to come in with a
big dog and bye bye Mango. After a while he got the hint and retreated
back to the break room where he slept for the rest of the day.
*******
I came home and was apparently quite fragrant to my kitties. They
always like to smell my scrubs and my shoes, since I come into contact
with so many animals. But this time Mischief spent EXTRA time sniffing
me and this ONE spot on my scrub top. I think I had gotten cat pee on
it. She spent a good thirty seconds sniffing it and then looking up
at me with a quizzical look. I had to pet her and remind her taht she
was still the queen.
take care,
kristi

That is so sad about the dog. But he had your love before going. That
is the nice thing about compassion and empathy. The well never empties
no matter how much you pour out. You go ahead and cry for the dog.
Hopefully Mango has learned his lesson. He seems pretty smart.
When I was working in epople's homes and around their pets, I would
come home and get the sniffing. sometimes the cats would even do the
"flehmen" thing.

Congrats on your permanent status!! It must be a relief after all that
studying and job hunting to be able to not be on your toes all the time.

I'm so glad to hear you are doing so well in your new job, Kristi. I
can't believe it's been 3 months already.
