We're having a rough time (again) and could really use some purrs to help us
out of a major hole.  I don't want to get into detail, but right now is not
a good time for us.

One bright note, however, some one at the VA has admitted that Rob has brain
cancer and wants a copy of his treatment plan.  In the bad news department,
the neurologist and speech (and memory) expert think that Rob is showing the
signs of early dementia.

I don't know what the VA is, but I hope this means you will get lots of
support for Rob.

The VA is the Veterans Administration, a branch of the US government
which handles benefits for military veterans, in particular a series
of hospitals.

I'm afraid that they're right about Rob's mental state.  He's been throwing
more tantrums, acting childish, and showing all the other signs of dementia
that they told me about.  We can really use the purrs though, it's one of
those everything has to fall just right for us to just get by events.

That's so hard.  Someone with a loved one in a similar situation once
told me that as it progresses, it gets a little easier to deal with
because they calm down as they become more accustomed and accepting of
their mental state.  I hope that came out encouraging, and not
discouraging.

Oh dear! Purrs that its not dementia. Could it be a reaction to a
medication? My Dad recently had reaction to a collestrol drug. They took
him off it and he's back to being active.

The neurologist wants to change him to a different seizure drug as his
behavior is not very nice at times, and the new drug would help him with the
behavior problems as well as his medical ones.

Pam,
My heart goes out to you.  You and Rob are two of the bravest people I know.

You might do some research on supplements that might help Rob.  Life
Extension Foundation would be a good place to start. It uses worldwide
studies to identify nutritional supplements that will augment traditional
medicine,
Annie, happy that Rob will have a treatment plan and hoping for the best

I'm glad the VA is starting to wake up.  Sorry the mind expert see dementia
starting.  The thing is, since no two cases like Rob's can ever be exactly
alike, no one can predict what course it might take.

My Dad developed a degree of dementia with his cancer as some of the cells
invaded his brain.  But it never got really bad.  My parents moved into an
independent living facility (both were close to 80) and everyone thought it
was so loving that they walked around holding hands.  My sister and I knew
that it was as much to keep Daddy from wandering off as it was a sign of
affection.

And even with some possible dementia, Rob is still dealing with the loss of
who he was as well as I'd guess a lot of medication.  I know it doesn't make
the outbursts any easier to take.  But I hope it makes it easier not to take
them personally.

With both my parents the anger went away as they got worse.  So maybe to a
degree anger and temper are a good sign.  Not that they aren't still very
stressful.

Purrs, love, and all the hope we can muster on the way.
