Fudge and Caramel went to the vet today for their annual vaccines and
checkup. Whilst checking Fudge, the vet discovered that she has a
heart murmur. She's never shown signs before (she's 8 and a half).
He has suggested that we take her for a blood test as it could be
thyroid related. If that is inconclusive we have the option of an
ultrasound at £500. We are going to get the blood test done first off
as if it is thyroid, it's treatable. She isn't showing any other signs
of heart problems - she is very active, eats plenty etc. If we have to
go for the ultrasound we'll have to hit my savings as Scott is
currently out of work, and I am on maternity, but she's worth it.
Please could you spare a few purrs that the blood test gives us some
answers and that the heart murmur isn't too serious.
Thanks,
Kate.

Purrs that the blood test will be helpful. My Daisy was diagnosed
with a heart murmur recently. She was in for a check up and I was
going to have her teeth cleaned. They found the murmur. The next
step was a blood pressure check, a echo cardiogram, and an electro
cardiogram. Turns out that she only has a leaky mitral valve and can
go ahead and have her teeth cleaned. That will happen in Jan because
after paying for all the tests, I can't afford the cleaning until then.
Ah
well, at least it wasn't a serious problem.
Positive thoughts for an easy solution.

Hey Pearl has a leaky valve too! She takes one enecard and 1/4 a lasix
everyday so her heart doesn't have to work as hard. At first I fully
expected to come home to a dead cat shortly, but it's over a year now! I am
positive she needs a dental but worried because of the heart, asthma,
diabetes thing, but I think it will be really necessary. But I figure is
Julie's Sam can come through major surgery as he did Pearl can handle a
dental.

Lots of purrs for Fudge, £500 is a lot of money when you're on a limited
income.

I'm not really sure what I'm talking about here, but Jake has a heart murmur
and it doesn't seem to be that huge a deal. In his case as I understand it
his heart isn't beating as efficiently as it should. (He's just about eight
too). The vet didn't recommend any expensive tests or an ultrasound. He
did give us medication to give Jake for a month and we took him back for a
recheck. He seems to be doing a lot better on the medication. So much so
that if I notice he is more sluggish than usual, I also realize I've skipped
a few pills.
Before you spend £500 for an ultrasound, at least know what it will tell you
and how those answers will change treatments.

Many purrs on the way, Kate. Mistletoe was dx'ed with a heart murmur on
her second annual. We did the blood test and ultrasound and while there
was *something* going on, the feline cardio couldn't put his finger on it.
For her third physical, no more murmur, and none since. Purrs that it's
no more than a Ba*tard Cat Trick.

Many purrs on the way for Fudge (and your bank account). I agree that a
thyroid problem would be, if not desirable, at least an easily treated
option. So purrs that it is a thyroid problem (or some temporary condition).

Purrs on the way. Kitty FC has a heart murmur and it doesn't seem to cause
her any problems. The vet said she didn't need any treatment for it. I
hope that happens for Fudge.

I had weird heartbeats myself (I don't know if it would have been called
a "murmur", though) and it turned out to be because I was hypothyroid.
Thyroid meds fixed it right up. So if I could purr, I would purr that
Fudge have the same, easily treatable condition. :) I'll get my gang to
do the honors instead.

Piggybacking, since a lot of original posts didn't show up.
Kate, sending mega purrs for Fudge. If it is hyperthyroidism, it is
treatable. And from what my vet told me, it is getting to be very
common in middle-aged to older cats.
I wouldn't worry too much about the heart murmur, either. Again, older
cats often get this. My Cosmo has one (plus CRF), and he was diagnosed
six or seven years ago, and is still very much with us. My Tiki (RB)
lived to be 19 with a heart murmur and CRF also.
I know it's a scary diagnosis, but try not to panic.
