Smudge's neck got a cleaning

jXwXeXrXmXoXnXt@sonic.net - 25 Oct 2004 21:40 GMT It's always fun to watch the cats groom each other. Roxy and Smudge used to do it a lot more before I took other cats into the house (one stray, several fosters, and another adoption). Having all these other cats in the house has disrupted their routine somewhat.
This morning, though, I woke up to see Roxy giving Smudge a good workover on the crown of her head and the back of her neck - just the places a cat can't reach herself. Smudge was purring up a storm. Her fur was pretty damp and matted by the time we all got out of bed.

Usually, it's Frank washing Nikki, but sometimes Nikki returns the favour.

A few days ago, DH was sitting on the sofa reading, with Felix lying on the back behind his head [DH did appreciate the purring headrest
:-)]. Felix was grooming himself and I jokingly commented to him that his Dad could use some grooming too. *Right away*, Felix started in washing the top of DH's [balding] head, and continued quite enthusiastically for several minutes.

Amelia and Tabitha both go in for the hair-work task. Whenever one of us gets out of the shower, whichever of the two is closest waits until the human srapes a towel over their shoulders, then the kitty jumps up and starts grooming the human's hair (and in my case my rather large bald spot).
They can both REALLY get into the hair work! But Tabitha is the most amusing to watch - she'll end up rubbing her whole tiny body over the head she's cleaning.

Hee hee. A kitty cleaning is a great honor. ;)

Sometimes it is a kind of bossy thing. ;) Stinky was never allowed to groom Mimi, who would whap him if he tried. But Mimi would groom Stinky very vigorously, sometimes holding him down with a tiny paw. Stinky would always look rather bewildered, but very patient, while this was going on. ;)
Also, we once lived next door to a bunch of cats and a dog. The dog would lie on the floor, and the kitties would gather around his head, and gang-bathe him. The dog either loved it, or was just resigned to it. ;)

Stinky would always look Xoxo usually does forceful grooming, he'll grab Issa with both paws, very strongly, then proceed to groom his hear. Issa loves it though... unless Xoxo is using his claws, then they have a small skirmish.

(I didn't find that very intuitive at first, since among humans, the groomer is usually the submissive one, ie, the servant or slave). But you're right that when one cat consistently grooms the other, but won't allow reciprocal grooming, it means that cat is dominant.
Luckily, Roxy and Smudge have always had a reciprocal grooming relationship. Smudge often cleans the goopy stuff that constantly runs from Roxy's right eye. And when Roxy was licking Smudge's neck the other morning, Smudge looked very contented and purred away.
Sometimes, though, it is definitely a precursor to an attack. But I'm not sure if the grooming is the first step in an interaction leading to an attack, or if the attack happens *because* of the grooming, ie, "Get off me and stop wetting me with your spit!"

In my house, this is merely a precursor to an attack. I always get nervous when the cats groom each other. Especially when they're on my lap doing it.

Milo and Baggy used to groom each other, one of the things I miss, and I'm sure Baggy does as well.
