I'm Surrounded........

Mischief - 10 Dec 2006 19:46 GMT
Normally when i sleep, I'll have Mayhem curled up on one of my pillows
and Mischief curled up at the corner of the bed at my feet.

Well now IMP has decided that I'm not a scary human anymore and in
order to get pettins and scritchins he has to jump ON the bed.  So he's
been jumping up and settling down next to me. AWWWWW!!!

But whereas before i had to deal with two cats on the bed, now i have
THREE!!!

I tend to toss and turn and scretch out too.

Last night, i was in bed watching tv, with a big body pillow on my
right.  Mayhem jumps up, meatloaves on the body pillow and meows for
attention.   Then Mischief jumps up and settles near my right foot.
After a while, Imp jumps up on my left and settles down against me.

That was cute until i realized that i was falling asleep.  However,
since i was surrounded, i couldln't roll over to turn off the tv OR
turn off the light.

I was able to reach the remote and turn off the tv, but now i can't
reach the lamp since Imp is stretched out and leaning against me.  I
can't roll over the other way, cause the body pillow is blocking the
way with Mayhem on it.  And Mischief has rolled over and is now leaning
against my leg.

dang it....

Eventually i was able to scoot up and reach over Imp, who merely lifted
his head with a "Excuse me?"

But last night i got surrounded again.  And i wanted to roll over....

So much for that idea.

Argh, i'm not USED to not being able to move!!!

Your message really made me laugh - tho I only sleep with two cats, they
each have staked out one side of me and sleep pressed against both sides of
my ribs.  I have learned to <rotate in place> when I want to turn; sort of
like those things where you see hot dogs rotating as they heat.  Anything to
avoid disturbing the furballs :)

The other day, after not having a very restful night, I decided to read some
whilst laying in bed, and then inadvertently took a nap, in the middle of
the afternoon.  When I woke (my own snoring woke me LOL), I found myself
penned into the bed by *several* cats in the following configuration:

   Ping on my belly
Betty (who still adores her Unka Ping) on my upper lap region, snuggled
with Ping
   Tennessee by my left shoulder
   Weeble by my right shoulder
   Barney between my knees
   Bam-Bam between my ankles
   Ernie by my right foot
   Moe by my right ear
   Lizzie by my left foot

I was pinned down very efficiently.  Couldn't get up as the only cat that
wasn't on *top* of the covers was Moe (she was between the pillows).
Couldn't rotate in place because Bam-Bam & Barney were between my legs.  I
was actually able to drift off back asleep until Ping (on my belly) decided
to stand up, stretch, yawn, walk around in place, and settle back down -
that was when I realized I hadda pee!

Sorry kitties.

I left the electric blanket on for them while I was up.

They didn't move :D

LOL, I just love that image.  I've been there so many times.  And sometimes,
with a cat pressed to each side, I feel like I'm being roasted as well.

And what kind of a spell do they cast on us to make us so obliging?

On several cold nights last winter, Cinders spent part of the night
underneath the blanket, curled up against me.  On one occasion, I woke
up and wondered, sleepily, why my midriff was rumbling with a
vibration like a cat's purr.  Then I woke up further, and realized
that it really was a cat's purr.  Cinders was curled up against the
small of my back, and I was feeling the vibration of her purr.  Her
purr is quiet enough that it generally can only be felt, not heard.

I just end up in pain. Unfortunately, I sometimes have to shoo them all
out because I can't sleep with the back (and shoulder, neck, etc) pain
I get from the various contortions I have to do with them on me or next
to me.

But early in the night I almost always let them stay. Roxy or Smudge will
often lie on top of me, and when I turn over, they just kind of "surf"
on the unstable ground they're on, until it settles down again. Sometimes
I'll hold onto the cat in question, which seems to communicate the
message that I'm not trying to kick them off by my movements. Otherwise,
the cat will sometimes stalk off in a huff.

Josh, a previous cat now RB, used to do something like that.  It kind of
reminds me of burling (log rolling).

LOL, you mean with someone kind of "dancing" on top of the log as it
rolls? (Translation: dancing = "trying not to fall and break one's neck".)

Yes, it sort of looks like that, but the purpose is to throw the opponent
off balance and into the water.  BTW, I spelled it wrong.  It's birling.

Go ahead and move.  They'll settle right back down on you as soon as you
stop moving.

It's called the pretzel position. You learn to keep the remote within reach
for the TV.  I have a sleep mask that blocks out the light until I can get
to the lamp.  I guess a remote for the lamp would be nice, too.  And hope
that the phone doesn't ring.

You need a "Clapper"! Do they still sell those? I think Dennis conspires with
Sweetpea as she likes to sit on his lap in the evening while watching tv. He
wants a snack and asks me to go get it for him 'cause he doesn't want to
disturb Sweetpea! With the new baby, Kramer, it doesn't work as well though as
he has become quite a lap fungus. He wants me to pick him up as soon as I get
home and I can't sit down without him on my lap. He's such a little sweetheart!
Tippy is jealous, poor baby, so I make sure I give him extra attention.

Having a cat on the lap is a valid excuse in our home to not have to get up.
It seems that Jim's cell phone always rings when he has a cat on his lap and
I have to get it and see who's calling and it's usually one of his friends
whom I really don't care to talk to.
The other day, though, a grandbaby on my lap trumped Cinder on Jim's lap,
but barely.

Hmm... why? I'm sure Cinder can do far more damage to the offending
stander-upper than a baby. :)

Purr-haps to the physical person, but certainly not to Grampa's
heart-strings!

Sam, who would like to have a grandchild to spoil, but sees time running
out.

Well, Sam, we were beginning to wonder ourselves.  This is our first
grandchild, and you probably noticed that we aren't exactly spring chickens.

I hope your turn comes whenever it is the best time.

Yes, she could, but she took it very well and politely stepped off. Well,
there is another kind of "revenge" a baby might take that involves bodily
fluids.

Cinder is showing some interest in the baby.  When he fusses, she comes
over to see what's going on.

One time, she  jumped onto the chair where Jim was holding the baby.  He's
not quite able to reach and grab yet, but he looked at her with wide eyes as
she turned around and her tail swept by his face as she jumped back off.

Rosie, however, just goes up  to the platform on top of the cat tree, says
"humph" in cat language and curls up for a nap.
